Talk on SEN was that maybe Alan Richardson has overruled their recruiting department and told them to go out and get McCartin, who would have the final say in all of this if the coach and recruitment team want someone different?

Usually the coach has some input, but it would be unusual for the coach to overrule the recruiting department.

It would be more likely that the recruiting department were swinging either way and leant towards Petracca, then Richardson may have said he has a strong preference to the key forward, which made the group happy to swing the other way.

I wouldn't want to be in charge of recruitment if a coach could just come in at the end and choose over the top of all your hard work - particularly with very early picks.

I think this is all smoke and shadows behind the window. The media need something to talk about in the lead up to the draft.

The more they talk about pick one, the more they talk about the Saints; and in a positive sense. Doesn't happen much to them in the off season lately. Still think they'll take Petracca, because there are still a couple of decent KPF later in the draft.

Imagine if they take Wright and we have to choose two of the 'top 3'...

If you believe all the talk out of our club of late, definitely not Richardson. I think we made that mistake a few times in recent years with Lyon sticking his nose in and then Watters apparently wanting Trent Dennis-Lane (that's for that one, Scotty!) and I think we're pretty determined to not make those mistakes again.

Richo did make a good point though in that it now looks like you have to spend $1million+ PA to get/buy the "gun KPF's" and that it would make much more sense for us to just draft one when we have the chance.

Apparently the club have been told/asked by the AFL to keep our choice quiet though, to help build suspense, so I think there is a lot of BS going around to ensure that happens. According to the HS we haven't even told the other clubs that have enquired as to who we're taking in the last few days and nor have we told the one who we are taking and they may not be told at all prior to the draft!

If this is true then that's the answer to this whole Petracca/McCartin brouhaha. Another 'involvement' from the AFL to ensure the sport remains an 'entertainment experience' (read: $$$ making machine) as much as a professional competition. It's embarrassing, really.

Key points?

This pretty much covers it - its a general discussions about what may be going on behind closed doors, and all the possible permutations.

For a long time most of the football community have strongly believed that on Thursday night St Kilda will select Christian Petracca with the number one pick in the AFL National Draft.

However, reports are emerging that the Saints have changed their mind and will instead go for key position forward Patty McCartin.

“Well I think people are coming to the realisation about how close a call it is for St Kilda, for a long time they just though that Petracca was the fait accompli number one pick.

“But in reality it really is the toss of the coin,” said SEN draft analyst Brett Anderson.

The Saints have already known who they are going to choose for some time and Anderson believes that decision has not changed.

“From what I know there is no new information that something has changed St Kilda’s mind.

“There is only five people that the footy club that know who they are going to pick.”

The Saints rejected an offer for the number one pick by GWS for picks four and seven during the trade period, suggesting they were set on Petracca.

However, they were also keen on offering deals to then soon-to-be free agent forwards Tom Boyd and Adam Tomlinson to address their key position deficiencies.

Senior coach Alan Richardson made some interesting comments recently saying that it is going to be a very expensive process to lure any key forward to the club given what happened with Tom Boyd moving to the Bulldogs.

“You read those quotes and think maybe Alan Richardson has overruled them and said we need a key forward so let’s just go and get him,” added Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph.

“That muddies the waters.”

Everyone is saying McCartin to St Kilda. Petracca is exciting but I don't care who of those we get next to AB.

Oh lord please let it be true.

And what elite KPF's have been taken outside of the first round recently?

They want a gun, they use the top pick.

Saints board are turning on Petracca (he's apparently a downhill skier now). Industry consensus seems to be shifting toward McCartin at #1. It's happening, gents.

I originally was always under the impression that the Saints must take a KPF but then due to all the hype have been sucked in to the whole Petracca thing, now I'm confused and just want it to be Thursday night already.

McCartin is also 'Carts' to some posters now.

But honestly I'm not holding my breath either way. Brayshaw and another decent prospect is massive for us.

Jack Darling, Jake Carlisle, Jack Gunston; all taken outside the 1st round and all taken with a pick later than the Saints 2nd pick at 21. Reece McKenzie will be as good as any of them.

Reece McKenzie will not be. He is a big kid that beat up on week opposition late in the season.

IMO McKenzie will be a quality forward.

Means nothing because he will play for another team, so I hope he does bust. But when we had pick 23 I wanted Petracca, Brayshaw and McKenzie.

Don't be shocked if he's still on the board at P40...
