Absolutely, both players have been there from the beginning of the rebuild and are both integral parts of our team. Rich is a magnificent kick who provides incredible delivery and Redden is a contested king and does a lot of the inside work. In 2013 Redden's inside work was a reason why we remained competitive and player well IMO.
Ta but I'm fully aware of what they bring to the table and understand the team unity perspective part.

Was more after whether you rate them on par talent wise or is one a superior player in your eyes to the other?

Sorry.

I think I'd prefer to lose Redden as Beams would add the inside grunt that he would leave.

we dont have a great historical record of keeping our heroes ... see Rene Kink, Peter McKenna , Billy Picken Peter Moore, Phil Carman Craig Stewart, Mark Williams, David Cloke Phillip Walsh Geoff Raines (yes he played for us) Bruce Abernathy Charlie Manson Craig Starcevich Mick McGuane Paul Williams JAson McCartney Sav Rocca.. i could go on and on and on
Kinky had "had it" with Tommy, Peter perfect had chronic ankles, Billy wanted more money as did "Choco", Raines and Abernathy. Snaggles went to the Tiges for twice as much as we could pay, Starce was sent to Brisbane, Charlie and Mick were done and dusted and tried to get some cash before they were forced to retire, even the great Len Thompson did that. Phil Carman was a ticking time bomb and had to go before he did real damage, Peter Moore was head hunted by the Dees as a marque player, Clokey went back and played a charity game for the tigers and Jason McCartney was a 15 game youngster that was swapped to North. Phillip Walsh was targeted by the tigers during the "pies / tiges" war of the 80's and as a first year player crossed to the tigers for 400% mark up on what we could afford.

So....if you're trying to make a case that we don't look after our "stars" well enough....I think most of these guys went looking for a retirement package because they knew they were at the end of their careers. A few were bought out massively and some just had to be cleared for our own sanity (Phil).

Daniel rich would be my choice
Wouldn't be mine - too short, too slow, can't break a tag, hasn't ever really gotten enough of the ball and, for all the good press he receives about that nice left peg, his disposal efficiency will probably not get you excited if you are harbouring a misleading impression of some pinpoint accurate kicking god.

He is a nice player and I'm sure he'd valuable to the Lions midfield set up, but he certainly isn't what we need to introduce into the midfield mix at Collingwood - which in no particular order are height / size, pace and accuracy by foot at all distances - not just a penetrating kick.

naa not making a case just stating that football business is the same now as it was in the 70s 80s and that people have short memories of how supporting "players" was then . I loved Phil and Billy though

Mate you should have seen them when Bobby Rose packed up and went home to Wang at 26.....or when Johnny Greening (the best player in a generation) was felled and we lost him......god knows what it was like when Todd left for the VFA!!

I remember Greening, I was a young teen then & saw quite a few of his games. Greening was simply marvelous.

I just remember Greening and remembered his season when he came back. Imagine if that happened now... Jimmy O'Dea would never have played again. Im used to the Pies getting rid of players i am attached too (hence my nickname which is half ironic) but there is always someone to replace them. I just hope Pendles who i think is our greatest ever player (my opinion many disagree) finishes his career with us.

I'm part of the way with you. While I was angry with Heath for his sheer stupidity & putting himself in a position to be traded he's an amazing player with footy nous & smarts (well maybe not so smarts).

I honestly think Redden+5 for Beams is pretty fair. Although I'd prefer Mayes.

People seem to be forgetting that we are losing a gun player, our second best player behind Pendles.

Lions fans have also gotta realise that they need to give up something decent to pick up something elite. They are apparently offering him 800K per year so they shouldn't be giving us half arsed offers.

Boys....where were you when you saw Johnny Greening the first time? We were a top team then and he just superseded everyone else in the league!! It'll happen again. It did with Magic (Daicos) and it did again with Pendles....who knows what young Darcy's gonna end up?
It's the joy of starting afresh isn't it? Let's look forward to the future rather than thinking how we could have done it differently in the past?

Sorry.

I think I'd prefer to lose Redden as Beams would add the inside grunt that he would leave.
If we could get Redden, Greenwood and pick 5 I'd be satisfied. Beams is a huge loss but the key to midfield supremacy these days is depth. Our midfield depth has dipped dramatically since Swan has suddenly got old, Ball's retired, Daisy left, Sharenberg/Freeman haven't played a game and the likes of JT, Blair, Fasolo, Seedsman haven't really stepped up.

Losing Beams is bad but if we can rebuild genuine depth (rather than selling the farm on a tit for tat approach for Danger), I think we'll be better off in the long run. Redden and Greenwood together don't add up to Beams' quality but too many people forget that Beams is just one player. Beams is better than most of the Hawthorn midfield but as a unit they outnumber and overwhelm us.

Anyway, before I go off on a Prince Lumumba-like tangent, question for you Bert Man - your thoughts on Beams in return for pick 5, Redden plus a swap of 2nd round picks?
Another thing - Is Redden from Victoria? When is he out of contract?

Nevermind the fact that the majority of them were 15-30 years ago too. Actions that long ago have no bearing on today whatsoever. All of the non-playing staff from the president down have changed in that time, so we're as good as a different club.

This is what I'd like to see happen:

- Dayne Beams traded to Brisbane, for Jack Redden and Pick #5
- Heritier Lumumba traded to Melbourne for Pick #23, with Pick #23 then traded to North Melbourne for Levi Greenwood
- Angus Brayshaw drafted with Pick #5 (fear that Melbourne will use either #3 or #4 on him though). Would go with Jarrod Pickett or Jayden Laverde if Brayshaw is taken.
- Darcy Moore drafted with Pick #9
- Nakia Cockatoo drafted with Pick #30

If we come away from the trade and draft periods with those results, I'll be very happy.

We should try and trade up for pick 1 to get Petracca

I'd expect North are as keen to accept 23 alone as Coll are to accept 5 alone.
