What is the latest on Goldsack?
Under-rated IMO
Think if he hasn't signed by now he may well go. Would like to keep him, I'm an unabashed fan. But, like Daisy, if someone wants to pay him a huge whack more than we think he's worth and we can't match it without jeopardising our overall list payment strategy, can accept that he'll walk.

So, hopeful but resigned that it might not work out to keep him.

1116 SEN are reporting Collingwood'a trio of South Australian's - Ben Kennedy, Tim Broomhead and Matthew Scharenberg have all committed to new two year deals to remain at the Westpact Centre.

Both Kennedy and Broomhead will join fellow Croweater, Brodie Grundy from the 2012 draft to re-commit to the club, whilst the Pies have shown enormous faith in Scharenberg to overcome his latest injury hurdle, putting a two year deal in front of him that'll hold him to the club until at least the 2017 season.

Tyson Goldsack is also close to recommitting to the club, whilst Dayne Beams is in talks with his management group to extend his stay in the black and white beyond the 2015 season where he would become a restricted free agent.

Luke Ball's future at the Magpies is still up in the air, however with Brent Macaffer's ACL injury, club insiders have suggested Ball - who needs only 19 games to bring up 100 club games for Collingwood - will be signed up for 2015 with the Pies expected to be in the top four youngest teams next season.

That all sounds encouraging. Normal caveats apply about believing it when we actually see pens being put to paper.

Do hope that's true that we've extended Scharenberg to give him some certainty while going through rehab. Hope we do the same for Caff.

"Brisbane Lions revelation Stefan Martin had recommitted to the club, with details on his new contract to be announced as soon as today.

The Herald Sun are reporting that Martin has been heavily pursued by Hawthorn throughout the year, with speculation the Hawks offers a three year deal, however Martin is confident in the Lions' direction and has no intention to move back to Victoria."

"Collingwood and GWS have reportedly struck a deal that'll see former 2011 top 10 draftee, Liam Sumner move to the Westpac Centre in 2015.

Sumner, who hasn't been able to break into the Giants' lineup has played just the one game this season, bringing his current career total to 11 games.

The former Sandringham Dragon is out of contract and has alerted the club of his intentions to move home to Victoria for 2015, with his preferred destination, Collingwood."

If Sumner can't get a game for GWS, what hope has he got at Collingwood?

I'd love if the players in that report were the other way round. Martin would be the perfect man to compliment taking Grundy and Witts forward. IMO, if we had a genuine, hard bodied, experienced ruck to take say, 80% of ruck duels we could develop Witts and Grundy's work around the ground and forward line. Both could be quite damaging as forwards no doubt and if given time to develop there we could sidestep ruining their bodies by putting too heavy a load on them in the ruck which is such a physically taxing role, especially for young blokes.
Putting them up forward to really learn that role whilst taking only enough ruckwork to keep them sharp would be ideal as I see it. We also end up with two very competent forward options that way too as both have shown ability up forward. Grundy can take a nice contested grab and Witts is an absolute freak in that he can take a ground ball and snap a goal as well as most medium forwards, at 209cm! We're blessed to have these two but I think we're throwing them to the wolves too early and they do need an older body around if only to allow us choice in how we go forward with their development.
Martin looks to have finally realised his true potential. His bodywork is Jolly like but his movement and ability to cover the ground like an extra mid makes him the perfect modern ruck, at least with how the game is currently being played.
Sumner, I can't say I know a lot about other than he would add to our already overflowing stocks of sub 180cm players. Unless he possesses some genuine crumbling skills around goal I wouldn't be too enthused about our persuing of him.
Under Daveron we've got smaller bodied players which I don't like one bit. Premiership teams are usually stacked with bigger bodies and I doubt that'll change much, even with an emphasis on harder two-way running. Our lower level of skills means our pressure/tackling game makes us dangerous. Having bigger bodies would give us an advantage as we could hit the opposition hard from the first bounce, hammer them physically and by half time have the game wrapped up, much as we did through '10/'11. There's no point running out games better if we're simply chasing the oppositions scoreboard advantage. We're decimated with soft tissue injuries which are likely the result of this overtraining we're hearing about. Something needs to change. We need to target players with high skill levels if we're to attempt to go with smaller bodied, harder running players. IMO this whole thing is a massive **** up of biblical proportions and I really fear it may be the catalyst that sees us sitting outside the eight for a few years. Such a shame as we had an opportunity to really make several flag assaults with the list/systems we had just a couple of years back.

It's worth noting that a possible target of ours, Stefan Martin, appears to be off the table.

From what I've read, Sumner hasn't done a whole lot, even in the NEAFL this year, despite being a top 10 pick.

Here's a profile video of Sumner prior to his draft in 2011.

I realise that L. Sumner is not out-of-contract, and I definitely don't just blatantly trust rumours. However, he seems the type that we may look to target, perhaps offering some merit to this rumour. Known to have good skills, plenty of pace and goal sense; could play half-back, small forward or on a wing. Also, his performances towards the end of the year in the NEAFL were on an upwards trend, and we could possibly get him on-the-cheap considering he doesn't appear to have a place in GWS' best 22-30 players.

As popin said, we've also done this before with Adams and we may have a positive relationship with GWS in this regard so that could also work in our favour.
