Fixture 2014 Fixture Discussion

Post your wishes and predictions for our 2014 fixture here.

Does anyone have an exact date for the release of the fixture yet, on another note? All I've found references for is 'later this month', meaning October.

GWS v Sydney at Skoda in Round One appears to be locked in, but apparently the availability of the MCG is still unclear because of the Sheffield Shield final.

Regardless of the AFL trying to pigeon hole where we finished (6th or 9th), we fit into the "middle" band for fixturing. I have no doubt that the AFL will make it as hard as possible for us within the constraints of their own rules, but this is a rule change that may work in our favour. We can't play all the top 4 sides twice.

Working in the AFL's favour though, is Collingwood and Carlton both finishing in the middle tier meaning they get 4 blockbuster games involving Essendon out of the middle tier clubs.

Look for us to have maximum travel for a Victorian club though.

I have no doubt if we finished top 4 in 2013 and got relegated to 9th the AFL would've done the fixture based on us finishing top 4 to make it as hard as possible.

I hope they make it hard - playing better sides will improve us.

They can't **** us too much. Only 5 teams get played twice, and Carlton counts as one of our maximum 2 teams from the top 6.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Geelong and Hawthorn at the MCG rather than Etihad, and Adelaide in Melbourne just for once.

Please.

We have to host Rich/Coll/Carl - so we'll only get one of Hawks/Cats at the 'G if at all.

Probably depending largely on whether we get a ' home' fixture against the Dees at the MCG- hopefully we don't.

We have to have four MCG 'home' games a year.

There's only so many possibilities in life Doss, but can you have more wishes than possibilities?
I like to think so.

That's some cosmic shit right there.....

The rules that will determine which clubs play each other twice:

– Sides ranked 1-6 on the ladder will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three double-meetings with other top six sides. They will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two double-meetings with sides ranked in the second bracket (7-12). They will have either no double meetings or a maximum of one double-meeting with a side ranked 13-18.

– Sides ranked 7-12 on the ladder will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two double-meetings with sides ranked in the top third bracket (1-6). They will have at least two but no more than three double-meetings with teams in the same bracket. They will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two double-meetings with sides ranked 13-18.

– Sides ranked in the bottom third (13-18) will have either no or a maximum of one double-meeting with a side ranked 1-6. They will have at least one but no more than two double-meetings with sides ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three double-meetings with sides ranked in the same lower third bracket (13-18).

The lack of a final at Etihad this year could also be a factor, in that it will be likely compensated with a 'big' game or three.

Which, unfortunately, tends to be inclusive of games like Essendon v Geelong/Hawthorn.

2 x Perth trips
1 x Adelaide trip (no Crows game in Melbourne for about the 307th consecutive year)
1 x Sydney trip (Swans, of course!)
2 x Qld trips (Gold Coast away won't be so easy from here on for anybody)

This will allow the AFL to screw us over as much as possible within their own rules, as they will get 2 x top 6 teams to play us away (Freo and Sydney), with the other being a 'blockbuster' game against Carlton. The Richmond 'Dreamtime' game will be our only game against them for the year, but we'll get the two games against Collingwood, as usual. The only issue I can see is will we get WCE in Melbourne or Gold Coast? As we'll certainly get them both away.

All this is working on the finishing places after the finals have re-jigged a few teams.

Fixture will be released October 31(According to the 'Road to 2014' bit on the AFL website)

I would expect us to go back to playing Carlton in Round 3 this year, then there's ANZAC day round 5 and the Dreamtime game normally falls at the end of May in round 9.
Carlton will be our top six double up, 2 of our double ups from the middle six to be Collingwood and Richmond, and I would expect a double up against the Eagles from the bottom 6 if they are intent on making life hard for us(although not convinced they would be).

Edit - that leaves 1 extra match that could fall against any opponent, so who knows.

Certainties:

Round 5: Collingwood v Essendon (MCG)
Round 9: Essendon v Richmond (MCG)

Collingwood x 2
Richmond x 2
Carlton x 2

We're due to play Adelaide in Melbourne, and I expect the AFL will shaft us and make us play a WA team twice (again) plus Hawthorn twice.

They will have at least two but no more than three double-meetings with teams in the same bracket. They will have a minimum of one and a maximum of two double-meetings with sides ranked 13-18.
So we'll get Collingwood, Hawthorn, Carlton, Richmond and whoever finished 13th twice.

That's West Coast.

We'll also have Port, Fremantle, Sydney, Gold Coast away with one of Adelaide or Brisbane away also.

We have had a tough draw most years.. so it can't get much worse..

I don't think the AFL will screw us with 'who' we play but rather where and when.. so expect a heap of 6 day breaks.. and expect 6 day breaks after the two WA trips we do.. or back to back road trips.. like WA Sunday Twilight/Bris Friday Night

It will be horrid.. I think we all know that.. but if we are good enough.. then we are good enough.

5 double up teams - Collingwood/Carlton/Richmond/Freo/ Port Adelaide

Home Games: Hawthorn (E), Geelong (E), St Kilda (E), Collingwood (MCG), Carlton (MCG), Richmond (MCG), Freo (E), North (E), Melbourne (MCG), WBD (E), Port Adelaide (E)

Away Games: WCE, Freo, Adelaid, Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast, GWS, Port Adelaide, Collingwood (MCG), Carlton (MCG), Richmond (MCG)

I really cannot understand why there is this insistence on the yearly Essendon v Melbourne game, at the MCG, being our home game.

Firstly, give it to Melbourne. They need more home games against high drawing teams. It benefits them. Secondly, if it must (for whatever reason) be an Essendon home game, play at Etihad for crying out loud. Essendon v Melbourne at Etihad would still draw ~40k. Thirdly, taking it away as one of our 'home' MCG games opens up the possibility of a home game against Geelong or Hawthorn being at the MCG instead.

But I guess that makes too much sense.
