I think in regards to trading Hallahan we have to appreciate what opportunity he represents to Hawthorn against what a pick represents to Hawthorn.

If he goes, in the short term we are probably not much worse off because we already have sufficient depth for next year and probably the year after. We do lose the potential for a ready to go mid come 2017 but potentially we can trade for one or one of our current lot will rise up to fill that void anyway. Long term our window of opportunity extends out a bit into the future by having a higher pick this year. We also don't have to recruit someone at pick 92 and have them on our list for 2 years. We might also be able to hang on to a player like Shoey or Simkin or Cheney etc. as we won't be as pushed for list space.

This is not to say he won't be a good player but the opportunity we lose by trading him might not be as high as the opportunity we gain by having a higher pick in the draft and not having to delist another player.

for list purposes don't we need to move on another so we have the minimum amount of picks at the draft?

so some one gets traded for a pick or we are delisting them any how.

take your choice

Box Hill Hawks.
Feel for Lowden having to size up a contract at Essendon. Guaranteed games when the cheats get banned and all, but what a mess to walk into just to try and make it at AFL level.

And imagine that narcissist, self injecting, botox loving flog as your coach? Poor kid.

I hope he can get a deal somewhere else..
Maybe, when ASADA are through, he will only have a handful of teammates. That would guarantee game time.

The biggest reason i'm fine with trading Hallahan is that i think it's extremely unlikely his situation will change at the end of 2015. The only reason he got games this year is because we had a massive amount of injuries. Even if that somehow happens again in 2015, Anderson, Whitey and JOR will be added in 2015, meaning Hallahan will have less opportunity. Even at best case for him, he plays half a dozen games, which i don't think is enough for him to not ask for a trade.

Add that to the fact that we need to free up a couple of spots on our list, and i don't see how trading a depth bloke for something of value is not the right decision. My other thought is, how many players who can't force their way into a team after four years (despite being healthy for the last two, albeit in a top team), then go on to be the kind of superstar who can lead a midfield? I'm sure there are examples, but if we foresee him being just a solid, bottom 6 of the best 22 type player at best, then we should see what we can get for him.

All those you have named are all coming off serious injuries or have been injured. No guarantees they will come on ... Whilst they are certainly talented they are still very unreliable and are not in the same league as hodge , Mitchell and Burgoyne.
Hallahan has a history of injury himself. And of the extended depth of midfielders we have at the moment he presents the best trade value. I'm more than happy to keep Hallahan as I think he'll make it in the next couple years but if another club is super keen on him and willing to alleviate us of the need to needlessly de-list other players in exchange for a decent draft pick then it's not a terrible result.

Hawthorn Midfield/Gold Coast Midfield:
Mitchell / Ablett
Hodge / Rischitelli
Lewis / Swallow
Burgoyne / Prestia
Shiels / O'Meara
Smith / Bennell
Hill / Harbrow
Langford / Stanley
---
Simpkin / Martin
O'Rourke / Shaw
---
Hallahan / Sexton
Woodward / Lemmens
Anderson / Lonergan
Hartung / Boston

I really don't see how Boxer's midfield chances are going to greatly improve at Gold Coast. Assuming he's better than GC's depth, he's going to be competing with Jack Martin and Matt Shaw for midfield time, whereas spots will be opening up on Hawthorn's list.

Oh well, take 29 and run.
Martin will play up forward again I would say. He would be ahead of Sexton, Lemmens, Lonergan and Boston. He will be a tight squeeze and will create competition for spots but I am really keen to acquire him.

Gold Coast need someone to go in and do the heavy lifting in terms of tackles and contested ball so the younger players can play around him and not get worn down. Similar to how we used Sewell to take the hits and then mitch/Hodge/Burgoyne would win us the game in the second half etc. Hallahan doesn't have to be better than their other mids just better suited to that role. Incidentally he has a great will to win and leadership qualities so that would be a big bonus for them too.

If we lose all of Lowden, Hallahan, Grimley, Schoey and Cheney, that's 8 outs including Sewell, Kelley and Garlett.

I can't imagine having 6 picks in the draft, and I can't see us upgrading more than 1 rookie at most, so do we have our eyes on 1-2 more players potentially?
