So the chat about a possible Gabba curtain raiser turned out to be garbage.

AFL curtain raisers are a bit rubbish since the AFL brought in a rule that they must finish at least an hour before the main game. Basically means if the AFL game is set for 2.10pm, the early game will be at 10.00am so it is guaranteed to finish before 1. It means sitting around for an hour and half watching people redo the boundary markings.

.

And I can't see any of the local clubs doing anything once the finals start, even though they've tried to pick the eyes out of clubs like Morningside and Broadbeach who aren't in the top league.

Southport will be strong, they will be the only non AFL club capable of anything IMO.

I would sit around for the hour, I do at Metricon when I go there.

No GABBA curtain raisers makes me sad.:(

Yep. I like to park at Chermside and catch the bus to the Gabba. Being a GA member means getting there 1/2 hour before gates open, lining up to get in early to secure my preferred seat. This means that I need to leave reserves games by 3/4 time. Would be great to be able to get into the Gabba early, watch the reserves and already have my seat before the majority of the crowd turns up.:thumbsu:
My early arrival means I am already getting in and sitting around for an hour and a half before games anyway.

Yep. Generally, I can find something to occupy my time.

That's what hip flasks are for.

Knew a guy once who did a lot of public speaking at different venues / audiences etc - his standard option for a quick throat moistener while speaking (you could not always count on a (clean) glass of water etc) was water in a hip flask ... let's just say that the day he drank water from his hip flask in front of the equivalent of an AA crowd was *not* his finest moment of repartee and empathy with his audience....

(it is still the off season isn't it?)

Strange competition...14 teams but not all teams play each other..

Not sure how we could make the Grand Final and play a team we have never seen through out the year

Would be very unlikely under the new set up I'd think.

AFL aligned teams should be too strong, not sure how strong the NSW/ACT teams will be, but from what I have heard they won't trouble many AFL teams. Southport might, NT might... not sure of the rest.

The Brisbane Lions have remained the benchmark of the NEAFL competition over the past two years, but an off-season that has seen the departure of many key players may take some time to recover from.

The Lions have lost a number of players who featured in last year’s grand final including Aaron Cornelius, Niall McKeever, Todd Banfield, Callum Bartlett and Patrick Karnezis among others.

New coach Gary O’Donnell said while their experience may be missed at some stages throughout the season, it will also provide an opportunity for some natural leaders to emerge amongst the younger players.

“I remember three years ago when we only won about four games and we weren’t very competitive at all (because of the number of young players),” O’Donnell said.

“Every season is different and to lose some of those experienced players can be good because the focus goes on the guys you want to come through as leaders in that sort of footy and hopefully it puts them in good stead for when they play in the AFL.”

While it is expected the players should look to win every game and ultimately play finals, the overall focus of 2014 is ensuring the players continue to develop in line with the senior side should they be required, O’Donnell said.

“Winning looks after itself if you’re putting the right structures in place and playing the way that we want to play, as you are modelling the players so they can have a seamless transition into the senior team.”

When did this happen?
What happened to Leigh Harding?
Was news to me. Harding was there today in a ressies coaching capacity...but not as head coach...

Maybe it's a one off or temporary thing, to have a senior assistant calling the shots early on to make sure Leigh is clear on what is required/expected and for G.O.D. to better assess those in consideration for a spot in the early rounds.?

Was actually quite interesting yesterday listening to Francis and GOD in the 3qtr time huddle yesterday (when we were well and truly getting thumped). Very different approach to what I've observed in previous years. A lot more educational and inclusive. You could see Francis' teaching background. Lots of questions and patiently extracting answers from the players. Not the Francis some ressies watchers of yore have come to know. eg "So what do we do when this happens? <pause for answer>"

At one point GOD asked for the players to turn to the bloke next to him and explain what his skill focus was for the day and how he was travelling in that regard, then vice-versa.

Did Zac Obrien play yesterday? If so how did he go?
