Once he had fully recovered from injury last year, he was the same old Sandilands, who always gives us a touch up (though rarely to the extent that he did in the 2013 QF). He had a three game lead-in to the elimination final in 2012, during which he averaged 16 disposals, a goal and 35.3 hitouts. If he was 'on one leg', he was doing a decent job of concealing it. He absolutely cremated (in order): an AA squad member that year, an AA squad member from 2013 and the 2010 AA ruckman - all of whom averaged well over 30 hitouts per game in 2012 (West averaged a shade under 25). Then for an encore, he soundly beat another 2012 AA squad member (and league hitouts leader that year) in the semi final.

Considering all that and the number of 'big name' ruckmen that Sandilands was absolutely abusing at the end of 2012, I think West actually did reasonably well. In fact it was the only game since Sandilands' return where the Dockers actually lost the clearances (and in three of the other four games, they won the clearance count by a significant margin)

And how did Geelong respond? Well, they dropped Stephenson, put West in on his own against Hale and McCauley for the Easter Monday game...and Geelong won the hitouts.

Geelong has actually won 42% of the hitouts and 51% of the clearances in games that West has played against Fremantle and Sandilands. It was 23% and 34% in the most recent encounter in the elimination final. As for his 'poor form', well his 25 hitouts the week he was dropped is five better than Blicavs or Vardy have ever managed in an AFL game. If Blicavs got 25 hitouts in a game, a petition would probably come out to rename the Ablett Terrace in Blicavs' honour. Plus, for a game where Sandilands' dominance at the ruck contests was always expected to be a factor, West's average of over 46.5 hitouts a game in the VFL (to that point) was probably worth considering.
Oh dear lord no don't start the west is decent rubbish again for 2014, we are all trying to look forward to bigger better things in 14, not another season of a mediocre ruckman and knowing we will get belted in the hit outs when it counts. Get Simpson mcintosh fit and then we can really start talking a premiership ruck division. If I hear talks about a ruck division for 14 comprising of Trent west then we may as well wave the white flag already

Can you please start a separate thread to discuss the merits of the ruckmen on our list and leave this one to what we are doing trade/draft wise.
Pure_Ownage or SJ can you help clean the thread up a bit?
I agree with this.. i am sick and tired of every f***ing thread being hijacked and either being a ruckman or a Mitch Brown shit fight

Anyone still want Longer from the Lions?
Doubtful he will be going to the Hawks with this news just through:
BREAKING TRADE: Ben McEvoy to Hawks. Shane Savage and Hawks' 1st pick (17) to St Kilda. HUGE play by the Hawks. McEvoy gone from the Saints.

When it comes to the draft we are regarded as one of the best at getting our picks right but surely when it comes to trading we would be close to last. We seem to panic and not plan ahead like the Hawks. Getting McIntosh last year seems ridiculous considering his injury history and now it has obviously cost us an opportunity to chase someone like McEvoy. Now i'm worried that going after Heath Shaw (who lets face it won't be the difference in us winning a flag) will jepordise signing a quality free agent next year. Of all the postions on the field surely a HBF is the least of our priorities! Whether you like the Hawks or not they are 5 steps ahead when it comes to trading.

Longer would be nice but this says it all for me:
“I know it’s a big call but he’s got a little bit of Stephen Silvagni about him, just the way he gets in and physically competes with his opposition and gives nothing away. A fine performance from him; really good to see a key defender find form and shut down a very, very talented player.”
- AFL academy development manager Michael Ablett speaking about Gardiner completely nullifying Power forward Jesse Hogan in last year’s National Championships.
We need this and he should be our number 1 priority with that first round pick.

This compensation for free agents is really holding things up, I don't agree with it in the first place but at the moment it seems clubs are waiting until they get their compensation before trading. IMO, the AFL should tell the club what compensation they are going to get, as things stand, within 24 hours of the deal going through. The club can then either trade that pick as it is, ruling themselves out of the free agency period for the rest of the year, or the can keep it and trade in other free agents after which the AFL would re-value their pick and the process starts again.
It would make things move much quicker.

Surely both Sydney & St Kilda are now after a #2 ruck after losing Mumford & McEvoy respectively; they both have a #1 ruck but nothing in terms of back up, unless the Swans are going to use Tippet in the ruck, but it seems a bit risky - so does this give West some trade value and improve the chance he might find a new club for next year?

This is good. McEvoy is a C+ ruckman. Longer will be A at least.
My immediate thought was that we now have a suitor for West (St Kilda).

They screwed up over paying for Hickey when Hickey and McEvoy were never going to be able to play in the same side.

They need a second ruck, come get him Aints.
