Would you go for Longer? Would he pair with Simpson, or too similar?

I don't know enough about him.
I would love to go for Longer. Three problems:

1. Longer will want to go somewhere where he is number 1 or close to it. At Geelong he's going to be number 3 for the next couple of years at least (remembering he's only 20 years old).

2. Geelong seem to have other priorities (Shaw, Adams) and not much trade currency (pick 15 but nothing else of equivalence).

3. Unless we can also ship West, we probably can't add another ruckman to our list.

Are you effing kidding me?
In what way did the Hawks plan for Bailey retiring?

The Hawks dont muck around when it comes to trading first round picks.
I'd suggest they would have had an idea it was coming knowing if he was battling... i am sure they have been talking to Longer for a while as well, but maybe the McEvoy option opened up and looked better...

That said they may go for Longer still, they have some young blokes in the 2s so may not need another one

I don't want Vardy in the ruck. My ideal situation is HMAC/Simpson with Vardy forward and Blicavs as backup/developing in the backline. West reminds me of Mark Blake 2.0. Decent player but just screams uncoordinated.
I'd rather him there as the number 2 than Blicavs. Especially after the finals series.

Oh dear lord no don't start the west is decent rubbish again for 2014, we are all trying to look forward to bigger better things in 14, not another season of a mediocre ruckman and knowing we will get belted in the hit outs when it counts. Get Simpson mcintosh fit and then we can really start talking a premiership ruck division. If I hear talks about a ruck division for 14 comprising of Trent west then we may as well wave the white flag already
That wasn't what was being discussed at any point.

He would cost us pick 15 and a player. I would love to get him but he would cost alot.
Yuup he would cost the earth. The lions were playing hard ball with the dorks,i am pretty sure the dorks offered pick 18 for him and they (lions) said theres still work to be done here.Good on the lions for doing that.

He was pick 8 in 2011, I think. I am really surprised Brisbane didn't take the pick 17 deal and Savage for him (assuming the Hawks offered it, which they might not have considering their "window" is now and not in 3 years with Longer will finally be up and going).

Does anyone else feel anxious that Geelong's competition (Hawks, Sydney etc) seem to be getting the edge this trading period? I don't subscribe to "trading for trading's sake", but somehow those teams manage to fill their needs/gaps with talented, durable players in the right age bracket while Geelong are left with ...not much (so far at least). Also, I'm not sure this isn't the way of the future. Relying on the draft is no guarantee of a team all peaking at the same time with the right balance and number of games in them in order to have a shot at grabbing a flag. So many other factors are crucial these days - particularly injuries. Probably totally premature to say this, but where is Geelong's improvement going to come from next year when compared with those teams mentioned above?

True that. With big boy he can ruck while hale plays forward they dont lose there forward strategies. While they cant leave longer to ruck on hes own just yet.

Hawthorn seem to be able to fit any ring-in they wanna add to their list under their salary cap; Gibson, Burgoyne, Hale, Gunston, Lake, now McEvoy (who is an excellent get for them if it's a done deal; he's no 'C+' ruckman as far as I'm concerned; a solid 'B' - take a good grab around the ground).

As for Sydney adding Franklin; when has Franklin ever bothered us ? I think they're crazy signing Franklin for 9 years, could well cripple the club (but maybe not if they retain their COLA).

I'm not too concerned, mainly because I think Geelong doesn't have too many glaring needs that require the sort of trading that Hawthorn has engaged in. Our greatest need is for inside midfield grunt and we are targeting this through Adams. Our next greatest need is key defensive replacements for Lonergan and Rivers but there's no point bringing in ready made players now to replace them as we would have too many on our list at the one time. Better to target Frawley as a free agent next season as Lonergan hangs up the boots.

I'm slightly concerned that we are going so hard for Shaw and this doesn't appear to be a significant need for us. However, I'll leave it to those that know better to make such calls.

Also consider that while other clubs are happy to openly discuss what their trading strategy is, ours is definitely a covert operation. So perceptions may not match reality.

Trade pick 15 for Longer

Play Blicavs as a key defender (mostly VFL) back up to Lonergan and Taylor

Play Vardy as a key forward (i dont rate him but happy to be proved wrong)

Trade West and 2nd round pick for an earlier 2nd round pick

Ruckman for next year Longer, McIntosh and Simpson

Surely if Longer looks at the injury rate of the 2 blokes he will be up against he would be confident of playing a lot of games.

Anyone else on twitter? Have to laugh.... there is a person there. . Paige something or other who claims to have these sources and be in the know at Collingwood... last week she tweeted Daisy to the Hawks was a done deal.. next day it's all but certain it's Carlton and she backtracks... this morning she says Shaw to GWS is likely as they have offered Didak a deal as well... 2 hours later she says the Cats are likely.. she just changes her story depending on what the journos tweet... and people listen to her as gospel and retweet her, ask her what is happening with this and that..

Very amusing - maybe i should start a trade twitter account and just make shit up for the lolz

In 5 years there is a very good chance that both those clubs will be feeling the same pain the 'aints are now.

She has got no ******* idea. She's just good at/attentive to marketing like Terry "the list manager" Wallace. How you can call yourself a list manager when you have overseen some of the worst trading/drafting decisions of all time is beyond me.

Glad I'm not the one that has seen it this way! I constantly see people following her as gospel... Our own cheer squad local Gysenn is guilty of it as well :D

We don't need Longer. No point giving up the world for a guy who will only play if both Simpson and McIntosh are injured. He's a good longterm prospect but rucks are easy to get through FA or trade. He's not with what we'd need to pay
