Also consider that while other clubs are happy to openly discuss what their trading strategy is said:
Think Hawks were pretty covert about their McEvoy plans. But, agree, Balme and Co are not saying a word and may have something in the pipeline. Would have been great to find a side like the Saints who are desperate for someone from a talented team, even if they are a peripheral player, and will therefore not mind getting the shorter straw out of the deal (eg a Varcoe/West). Don't think GWS/Collingwood are those sort of clubs however.

Glad I'm not the one that has seen it this way! I constantly see people following her as gospel... Our own cheer squad local Gysenn is guilty of it as well :D
I pass on the news that the journos in the know are reporting - not claiming to have any kind of inside knowledge, other than a friend at the club who tells me the late changes a few hours early...

By the way, my view on McEvoy being C+ is based on his ranking of 29th in the league for average hitouts, 19th for possessions and 30th for goals (of the top 50 ruckmen).

He is an above average mark but that is all he has going for him as a ruckman. He is not a significant upgrade on Bailey, that's for sure.

Does anyone else feel anxious that Geelong's competition (Hawks, Sydney etc) seem to be getting the edge this trading period? I don't subscribe to "trading for trading's sake", but somehow those teams manage to fill their needs/gaps with talented, durable players in the right age bracket while Geelong are left with ...not much (so far at least). Also, I'm not sure this isn't the way of the future. Relying on the draft is no guarantee of a team all peaking at the same time with the right balance and number of games in them in order to have a shot at grabbing a flag. So many other factors are crucial these days - particularly injuries. Probably totally premature to say this, but where is Geelong's improvement going to come from next year when compared with those teams mentioned above?
Where it always does, and always should - the young players coming through drafted and developed by the club. Our record in that particular area in the last decade is without peer. No reason to think they can't continue that.

Just heard on Trade Radio: Saints' list manager was asked about whether they are interested in Longer or West. Was a bit reluctant to name names, but conceded that there are discussions/inquiries taking place in relation to filling a possible need now that McEvoy is likely to go.

What could we get from the Saints in exchange for West? Could we trade West in exchange for the pick the Saints get from Hawthorn (17?)? Or would we have to package him up with another player? Saints' list manager also said they want to retain (if not get more) picks in the first round though ...

Paige knows her stuff. She works for the TAC cup as a boundary rider and is employed by the pies.

Likes to put her own spin on things, though.

Yeah and she also changes her story like I change my jocks!

I wouldn't listen to her 'inside word' too much as it's constantly changing depending on what journos report....which is what my original post was saying basically

McEvoy is a great get for Hawks, will be as influential and significant as Lake. Maybe not a NS, but exactly what they needed, AGAIN.
They are amazing at getting who and what they need, B2B a real chance.

Yeah fair enough.

When someone has proved to have great insight and accuracy over a number of topics, you tend to listen to whatever else they have to say. She's an expert on the draft, so you'd assume she knows her stuff with the trade period as well.

She's treated like a messiah by every 13 year old with a supercoach team, though.

Every individual and the injuries sustained are unique. I'm guessing it doesn't help that Bailey is a very big guy, who places a lot of stress onto his knees.

And Longer being 'an A at least'...?

I'm not the slightest bit interested in him personally. He'll cost way too much, both trade-wise and salary-wise. We're already miles over what our budget should be for a functional ruck department.

We'd be lucky to get similar to what Carlton got for Hampson (late 20s/early 30s). The only leverage we have with West is that he's contracted. He was considered surplus to needs last year (when our two best ruckmen were injured), we'd be quite happy to trade him for a decent draft pick and opposition teams would be well aware of this.

Are you effing kidding me?
In what way did the Hawks plan for Bailey retiring?

The Hawks dont muck around when it comes to trading first round picks.
No im not "effing kidding you". My post wasn't based purely on McEvoy's recruitment. It is widely reported that they were into Lake well before the trade period last season, same with Gunston & Burgoyne prior to that. They obviously knew Bailey was in doubt to continue his career based on the fact that they had to carefully manage him through this season and that they had been courting Longer for a while.

Mate, prior to last years draft we didn't have 1 traded player on our list!
And with FA we grabbed 3. How many do you want?

I'd suggest we plan well enough through the draft thank you very much. And every team is going to hit a road block where they need to fill a hole.

I don't care if we have 0 or 10 traded players on our list. But if we are going to go down that track lets make sure they are quality players who will fill a required role.

I'm not bagging the club just saying we could learn a lot from the Hawks in this area and considering they won the premiership in the AFL & VFL that is nothing to be ashamed of whether we like them or not.

Have to admit my initial thought was that the Saints got fleeced, but a Saints poster made a similar case to you - average ruckmen who is also average when resting forward.
