This is Hawthorn we're discussing.
It seems, when the time comes, they will get who they need and want.
They can, and they do, because they are Hawthorn, they seem destined to always be good and competitive, they are successful, success breeds success, players want to go there.
Don't like it?
People also think of Geelong like this- those outside Geelong more so.
Listen to the envy when you discuss our "plight" with Dogs, Demons, Saints, NM. GWS, GC, Lions etc supporters.
Probably right. I said to a whole bunch of people at the beginning of the year this year "if you think clubs like Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney and Collingwood are just going to disappear - you're deluded. One of those might have a bad year but anyone breaking into the top needs to get past them." (In response to assurances like Geelong wouldn't make the 8 and Port would win the flag etc etc)

I suppose I should remember that now on Hawthorn - my heart say they're gone - my head say "DAMN IT!" :)

Ohh don't mention that.... nearly put my remote through the TV after the 2nd one in a minute
Ditto - then I remembered it was a new TV :p - but another year and a few more finals under his belt now. He'll learn from that - all our players are good learners - no surprise given that's what Wells and co look for.

Any interest in SJ as a swap for #1?
I can't think of a single reason I'd do that. No 1's are a notoriously risky business anyway. I still reckon we got about the third or fourth best out of last year's draft with ... (was it 17?) We have a great crop of youngsters and picks like Thurlow are the basis. We don't need #1 picks or million dollar players

Agreed.

They are tryin to win their flags now, as they (rightly I think) feel the expansion clubs will dominate in the second half of this decade. They will rebuild at that time, while everyone else is slogging it out againt the super suns and giants - us included!
I'm not even sold on gunston to be honest, I will wait and see how he goes on the best or second best defender before saying He is a future gun. Most quality young talks get either the CHB or FB, how many get away with the third defense on them? Hawkins definitely didn't. Let's see how he goes with a quality defender opposed to defenders third tier, then we will see how good he really is.

Shiels I don't rate at all, to be honest I think he will be just a serviceable player, breust I think is even a little overrated, will become a solid B grader but I don't think anything more.

Hill? Obviously not the same quality as Christensen Duncan motlop Guthrie.

They really are going to be in a lot of trouble soon

+1 there is only so many times you can top up.
I think they could obviously get away with it while they had a core group of franklin roughead hodge Mitchell Sewell Lewis to mould around, but once these guys start to slow down or retire things are going to get ugly quite fast down there

I see a lot depending on what they do the rest of this trade period... they will argue that they have coped fine without Buddy... BUT how will Rough go getting the best defender every single week? And getting double teamed? And what happens if he gets hurt? Hodge, Mitchell and Co are getting on and whilst we have developed mids they have added 2 outside soft runners in Smith and Hill and just traded out a young mid they had been developing... could go pear shaped quick

Defenders need to learn how to play against Gunston, that sneeky bugger has a habit of scoring too easily.
I honestly think in this instance his size is an advantage he has the arms and body of school girl so I think opposition defenders worry about manning up the bigger boys and he gets to sneak away.

I love trade period. It gives players a second chance elsewhere and it gives fans a chance to vent and threaten to rip up memberships if they don't like what their club is even just rumoured to be planning to do. :D

Hawthorn are a few injuries away from falling away.

It's easy for everyone to be up and about when you are chasing a flag but now that they have won it a few players wont go as hard. Losing Franklin puts a heap of pressure on Roughead and Gunston, Franklin being a tall flanker made it really hard for defences to cover all 3.

Even though Savage is a fringe player he is still a young midfield rotation they wont have next year.

Their best players are all old and back to ba.ck grand finals takes its toll.

Wouldn't surprise me if their midfield started getting run over a lot more next year.

Careful, people used to say that about us.

After his gf performance, and with Buddy out of the picture, Gunstan may find himself with a bit more attention.

I like your 'schoolgirl' arms comparison though, he is a bit like that, and clever sneaky too :thumbsu:

Nick Smith and Jesse White from Sydney have been linked heavily in recent days to the cats. Smith is exactly what we require to play that small back pocket role. White was expected to go to pies but cats are making a late bid. Sydney want cats pick 15 as a minimum for the 2 players. Collingwood only prepared to offer a pick in the 30's to 40's for White which has held up the deal.

I would do that. Smith and White are 25 and we could have them for 6-8 years, the type of players may need. A tall forward to help Hawkins and a small defender to shut down small forwards.

Also suggested that Swans may be keen on a trade involving Varcoe as a replacement for R. Shaw

Where did you get that from? It doesn't say on the Afl website.

Love the idea of Nick Smith but the Jesse White link is strange. Pods moving out was meant to open the door for Vardy to play key forward and also allow Kersten to play senior footy on a regular basis. Surely if White came to the club it means the cats dont have a lot of faith in Vardy's body holding up and probably spells the end for at least 1 ruckman (most likely Trent West). With the swans letting Mumford go I wouldnt be surprised if 1 of our ruckman went to Sydney as backup to Pyke.

Smith and White for West and Varcoe in principal sounds fair, but cats maybe need to throw in a pick as well
