I am not sure that Brown or McCarthy will be traded or delisted at the end of the season.

Brown has had some chances but not that many. 10 senior games is too few to judge him really harshly while his form in the VFL has been good. I think he will get his extra year at the club.

Do not know much about McCarthy but his one game at senior level suggests the club thought he was ok before his serious injury. He has speed and I read he was quite a talent. But then again it will depend on how the club see him now going forward.

I think GFC will bank on Simpson and HMac to be there and fit next season. So I reckon West will go - even though he play against Port this week.

I see Corey and JHunt going. JHunt is unlucky as he is good form but GFC want Thurlow to play IMO. Even give Bews and Eardley a run sometime next season. So unless Boris retires that would allow the those players to get games in the backline - JHunt will probably go. He stays on the list only if Enright retires this season.

Blicavs to stay on the Rookie list and play as an upgraded player to take Menzel's senior place for the first half of the season. Then can be upgraded at the half way point of the season.

Still we need one more player to go to upgrade Walker and Burbury and take 2 ND picks.

Possibilities -

1. Maybe Chappy will not get another contract ? I think he might get another year.
2. Enright and JHunt go. But I think Boris will go one more season.
3. Cowan maybe delisted and we attempt to Rookie him. As another poster said GFC did spend time and money getting him treated so why throw him away now ? So maybe he will get one more season ?
4. Schroder. Not sure he will go. We need options re inside mids and he is looking ok in the VFL. Only GHS seems the better bet.
5. McCarthy. Maybe will be delisted but maybe not.
6. Brown. Many think he will go but I am not so sure.

My best bet would be West, Corey, JHunt and Cowan. But these could be wrong for sure.

From today's Hun re Free Agents (please do not shoot the messenger):

GEELONG
Paul Chapman (unrestricted) - A lot will depend on his ability to bounce back from niggling hamstring complaints.
Joel Corey (unrestricted) – Expected to re-sign.
Corey Enright (unrestricted) – Boris will go out on his own terms.
Josh Hunt (unrestricted) - Expected to re-sign.
Mathew Stokes (unrestricted) - Will get attention from rivals – especially given the emergence of similar small forward/midfield types in Allen Christensen and Steven Motlop.

Just had a look at that article, I know it says September 10 but looking at what they have written for our guys I wonder if it was actually written around April/May?
- August 12 it was announced that Stokes has agreed to a new 2 year deal with the Cats, so while their may be a hold up in the paper work I doubt he is going anywhere. Just seems slack they don't mention that.

If we re-sign both Corey & Hunt it will be at the expense of the youth who are coming through - so I would like to know who they suggest Geelong is going to delist or retire.

If uncontracted we will get nothing of value for him.

But I thought he signed on for 2 years last year so has a year left? If I'm right I reckon we could get Collingwoods 2nd round pick for West and our 3rd round pick.

Of course if Longer is on the market he is going to be the #1 ruck clubs will be aiming to trade for. West might be next in line if a deal can't get done.
Westy has a year to run on his contract but is a free agent at the end of it, so we may trade him if the offer is decent. Would have to be a fairly decent offer though given most of our other rucks are not durable.

I'm warming to the idea of trading Kelly (while he still has some value) to go after a KPD after seeing Lonergan lately. Bring Guthrie/Hyphen/Shredder in the middle, Eardley/Bews/Thurlow back pocket.
We won't be trading our veterans, it would be very bad for the culture.

The only guys that will be traded are those on the fringes who want opportunities that we can't or won't give them-see Brown, West etc.

That'd probably be at the lower end of the scale, I'd like to think we could get a slightly earlier second rounder than that, but it depends how many clubs are interested.

We shall see.
Doubt that a workmanlike second ruckman would be worth more when that when there is the likes of Bellchambers still around. If we could get pick 35 I'd grab it with both hands. See what Wells could conjure up with it.

Pretty sure Stokes already signed a 2 year deal last month.

One less on that list.

To an extent. Losing promising youngsters and plummetting down the ladder because they can't make tough choices is bad for the culture too.

With HMac & Simmo in the wings for next season I doubt they'll trade for another ruckman. Although I do think West could be traded with possibly some other players for pick in the third or second round.

I expect Chappy & J Hunt to be delisted, but I think both will get a job at another club. It's a tough business football and sometimes the club has to do what's right for it, at the expense of some players/fans wishes. Our future does not lie with these two players.

Enright will stay a cat.

PODs has a few more years in him due to his late start to his AFL Career.

Joel Corey will be strongly advised to retire I suspect (like Dasher was).

Stokes just signed a 2 year deal.

I'd like them to throw up Varcoe as a trade option too and see what they could get for him. I just have a nagging suspicion we've seen the best of him. West & Varcoe for a pick in the 20's would be a win for us and a club looking for some quality depth players.

I would love to try and pry Scooter from the Eagles, not sure if Varcoe would get the deal done though..

Thoughts?

Not that this means anything in any way shape or form other than a discussion piece (and giving me something to respond to you with) but I did a spot of fishing for GWS's pick 20 (or early 20s selection).

Among the witty responses like "Selwood" I did get one reply which was interesting.

This chap didn't want to deal the second round pick but rather suggested he be interested in Varcoe for Pick 9.

I believe that is their activated compo pick - which, tbh, I'm unsure can actually be traded.

Gotta be honest, if I was offered pick 9 for Varcoe I'd probably do it.

Doubt Varcoe alone would be enough, might be something of an unpopular option but what about someone like Taylor Hunt thrown into the mix maybe?

I would consider Duncan, Bundy, Motlop, GHS as guys who are off limits, but Hunt is someone who when he is good he is very good, but when he is not good he can be hard to watch - so is he worth having an a trade option to get a deal done?

agree with what CF said. We have a group of guys getting towards the end of their careers and it would be better for the club to lose 3 this year (Corey, Chappy & J. Hunt), another 2 or 3 next year (possible combination of Pods, Enright, Lonergan & Kelly - thinking of his mixed form this year, not sure of contract status), and the year after (2015) could be the end for guys like Bartel, Stevie and maybe a couple of others who don't retire next year and are in that 30+ bracket which seems to be when retirement talk starts; worse thing for the club is to hold on a year too long with some of these guys and then lose 6 or 7 at once, or anything of up to potentially a 3rd of a our best 22.

I agree. I think clubs need to be bolder than they are when it comes to trading/drafting. Why not throw up a good player if you just might get a 10 year elite player from the draft for them.

Varcoe alone would not. Whilst not old he is not young anymore either whilst Scooter certainly is. Varcoe is however what WC would be looking for (outside mid with pace). Varcoe's form and injuries however make his value considerably less than Selwood.

I can't think of any other expendable players WC would be interested in so the only likely trade I think could occur is Varcoe and first rounder (17?) for Selwood and pick 24 or more likely 42 or something in between if they can acquire a pick through any other trades.

Well, it caught me a little by surprise.

Look, it is one guy's opinion sitting at a keyboard who (probably) has nothing to do with the Giants but that was the name he threw up without me leading him.

He basically said pick 9, in his opinion, was useless to GWS because of the number of immature bodies on the list. He didn't want to give up pick 1 (can't say I blame him) but was happy to trade out 9 for a guy in the right age/game bracket.

He also thinks GWS has more pressing needs for a ruckman or key back but, hey, don't we all. ;)

I love what Buckley did. Granted there are cultural "issues" we don't have to worry about. But I love how quick he's dealt with it. No softly-softly approach there.
I respect him for having the balls to do it.

It wouldn't have been easy as he'd know there'd be some backlash over it.

Doubt I could do it in his position.
