I love what Buckley did. Granted there are cultural "issues" we don't have to worry about. But I love how quick he's dealt with it. No softly-softly approach there.
I suspect Buckley has been biding his time for a while now on the players he's let go. I think if he trades Shaw & Thomas then that is going to give the rat pack a solid (and much needed) kick up the ass.

In non surprising news - Tom Gillies delisted by Melbourne:

James Sellar, Josh Tynan, Troy Davis, Tom Gillies and Tom Couch were informed that they were no longer required.
All except Davis had joined the club during Mark Neeld's period at the club.
Aaron Davey, David Rodan and Joel MacDonald also retired this season, bringing the changes to the list so far to eight.
The club did not renew the contracts of assistant coaches Brian Royal and Leigh Brown.
don't think any of them are worth going after.

Generally trades where picks like 9 do not get done.

So cannot see the Cats doing much re trades - maybe West and our second round pick for a better pick.

Maybe pick 34 or so to pick 18 or so.

That might be about it I reckon.

Cannot see GFC trading Varcoe who is a MC favourite.

I was chatting to a mate at lunch time and suggested this Friday night is the bigget game for the club for the past two years. Win it well, we're in with a sniff. But if we get well and truly run over, giving us a 0-3 finals record for the past couple of years, it should be adios to quite a few, ala what Bucks has just done. Exciting times ahead.

I bet it won't be though.

Trade walker for 3rd rounder
dangle varcoe around prob pick 20ish
Move west on for whatever we can get
Delist Cowan, schrod, Corey and possibly j hunt. List needs a freshen up, we are looking stupid for bringing McIntosh in but oh well.

We lack class in the middle, Christianson caddy Duncan like good but just lack that little something. I'm hoping caddy can develop into a goal kicking clearance bull. Bartel isn't that ball winner he used to be, can he tag or rotate through the forward line. We need to move on a ruck and bring a top end ruck talent in, been killings us since ottens retires. A genuine ruck man, plan for Dawson and McIntosh to never be on the park. we have to many second rucks on our list.

Perhaps we target lycett, longer or pick at the GC rucks? A good ruck prospect 20-23 years old

I would love to see us land Scott Selwood, maybe something like Varcoe+16+33 for Selwood?

Scott Selwood would have good value at this point imo.

I'd love to see if we could land either Daniel or Michael Talia for KPD aswell.

If as suggested we could do a trade with GWS with Varcoe for pick 9; how would a trade to the Eagles of pick 9 & our 2nd round pick for S. Selwood & their 2nd round pick? So it means the Eagles end up with 2 picks inside the top 10 but drop down the order for the 2nd round?
That all depends on being able to get pick 9 though which is probably unlikely.

Firstly, the whole Varcoe for Pick 9 is, as far as I know, just 1 GWS poster's opinion (which amounts to zip).

Secondly, while I'd do that trade, I doubt very much Varcoe is going to be shopped (he might but it seems unlikely).

Thirdly, if that trade did happen to materialise wouldn't we be better using that pick to draft Darcy Gardiner who is a young key position backman and fills a massive hole we have on the list?

EDIT: Or better yet, dangle pick 9 in front of Essendon and see if we can get Jake Carlisle.

What is the chance of Gardiner slipping to our original rnd 1 pick which is mid-teens or something? And would he slip to #9 in the first place - if we could get a pick that high via trades?

edit: I like you suggestion of Carlisle, but instead of worrying about trading with Essendon we see if the AFL will allow Essendon players to leave as free agents (regardless of contract status) and just sign him that way and then we use pick 9 to pick up someone else?:D

Selwood would be worth a top ten pick we don't have.

I agree though it is overs but for WCE to part with Selwood it would have to be.
I was going to say no way is he worth a top 10 pick. Then I watched this...
So now I'm in the probably not worth top 10 camp. Would be an amazing get.

He would add something we don't have at present i.e a very good lock down player. Can play offensively too. However, your trade suggestions are waaaaay over the odds. Nor is he anywhere near a top ten pick as someone else suggested in my view.

From today's Hun re Free Agents (please do not shoot the messenger):

GEELONG
Paul Chapman (unrestricted) - A lot will depend on his ability to bounce back from niggling hamstring complaints.
Joel Corey (unrestricted) – Expected to re-sign.
Corey Enright (unrestricted) – Boris will go out on his own terms.
Josh Hunt (unrestricted) - Expected to re-sign.
Mathew Stokes (unrestricted) - Will get attention from rivals – especially given the emergence of similar small forward/midfield types in Allen Christensen and Steven Motlop.

That would be a mistake.

Well, many people suggest he is the best key defender in the draft so he might not last until 9.

But there would be more chance in him being there at 9 than our current first selection I'd think.

The only place Varcoe will be going is to Adelaide, he has a contract and unless he requests a move home he won't be going anywhere.

My guess is that the club would try and facilitate a trade back to Adelaide if he asked for one.
