Bad call on Hartman, sure he only gets half a dozen touches a game but looks composed, generally makes good decisions and his disposal is usually of a high standard.

Much rather that than a kid who's getting 20 touches and 10 clangers.

Give this kid some pre-seasons in the gym, a decent tank, and some confidence - seems like a shy kid who doesn't yet feel part of it all - and he will surprise a few.
Cannot understand the hype on this guy based on what I've seen. I'll be honest - if he was white no one would care and he probably wouldn't even get a game. Needs to improve a hell of a lot more.

I dont hate Hartman or anything.
But I was watching him on Saturday and was thinking "what are his attributes that made us draft him"

Now supa may be correct. He may just lack a tank.

But I was watching him run around off the ball etc. And I just couldn't see it.
He does remind me of someone but I just cant put a finger on who that is.

As for Walker, I dont regard rookies as list cloggers. They are there because you're taking a punt on them.
Is that someone a player that was instrumental I winning us 2 premierships?
From my point I see that Hartman has done as well if not better than Hamling did in his first year.
People were questioning Hamling's worth as a 1st rd pick last year, he was a twig with no fitness and hardly played as he was brought along at a cautious rate.
Hartman who is still only 18 has shown glimpses of his talent and lets remember he was a 4th rd pick when we didn't have a rookie pick available.
His 2nd half of the year has been much better and he's in a team full of Afl quality and top line Vfl players.
if he shows the improvement that Hamling has shown in his second year we will be once again saying what a genius Wells is.

Kersten probably, I don't think Brown will be here past this year. As others on this board know I don't think he's up to it - to put it mildly. As Jmac2225 said our list is pretty solid so time will tell.
He's contracted for 2014. And is easily our best (and only) key defensive backup in case Taylor or Lonergan were to get injured.

For mine Hunt & Corey will be asked to hang up the boots. Chappy probably played himself into a one year deal last night. Brown and West might shop around for opportunities and Walker might get some interest from those that miss out on Crameri or Gumby. Otherwise he gets upgraded.
I have to ask, do you think Walker should get upgraded, but we should move Brown on? If so I'm afraid we disagree. Walker simply can't kick well enough. And that's at VFL level.

I've never really hyped him up - I think - more defended him given his age, limited football background and his potential upside which I've seen - deceptive pace, good skills, reasonable composure and footy nous and a bit of X-factor about him.

Will need to put in a power of work to cut it at the top level but for a speculative 70's pick playing his first season against big bodies I think he's acquitted himself ok. Realistically should be in next months draft but we've put 12 months into him and should be getting around the kid, not trying to get rid of him.

Rosso , I was just about to ask the Chappy question. Does 4 goals = another year? The trouble is Corey more than held his own as well. Lets face it they both could go on , if they are mentally still "on". Some guys are just animals while others do reach a point of "enough". Reading Scarlett's book recently , he and Boris are so close , it wouldn't surprise me if he pulled the pin...even when he has more to give.
Disagree with that. Cost us 2 goals through shocking mistakes and his kicking varied from okish to appalling all night. Don't doubt his commitment or effort or workrate - it's exemplary, but don't think he's got much left at all. I'm hoping he can drag one good game out this week.

Varcoe is like a giant medieval catapult or cross-bow. Takes a long time to calibrate and there will inevitably be a lot of misfires and wasted ammunition but when finally on point utter devastation ensues.

1. That was nearly 2 years ago.
2. He kicked 3 goals, but it wasn't like he was BOG or anything.
3. He hasn't come anywhere near that form since.
4. It doesn't matter as he'll never be dropped, let alone traded.

I think West & Brown will probably ask to be traded, and we'll try our best to move them on in return for draft picks. Unless someone else also wants out, aside from that I wouldn't see us getting very heavily involved in trade month or whatever it is called now.

Surely Josh Hunt is done, and I would also retire Joel Corey even though I strongly suspect he won't want to finish up yet. Absolute legend of the club, but now perilously close to "played on too long" territory. I reckon Chappy is worth another year though, and Enright is a long way from finished.
I'd be surprised if Brown asked to be traded. Anyone who has watched Lonergan over the last few months will have seen how much he's slowed down; surely opportunities have to come.

I don't see Corey as the type to ask for the unreasonable. He's been club first his entire career. As much as I hate to see him slowing down now, he's not stupid and will do the right thing. Almost certain of that.

He is a young first year kid. Give him his second year. Cowan seems more of a list clogger to me. When does he even get on the park?
He had an achilles injury for 18 months that when finally diagnosed and treated correctly he rapidly recovered from. Unsurprisingly given his time out and that he's out of contract he went a bit to hard in games (in which he played really well) and suffered some minor soft tissue injuries. In his second year he played 13 VFL and 3 AFL games finishing sixth in the VFL B&F. While the club may well be a bit more ruthless I still can't see the point in delisting guys like Cowan and Schroeder who have progressed nicely in the twos and shown glimpses in the seniors just to pick up players in the lower reaches of the draft who will go through exactly the same development cycle.

Cowan has been at the club for 4 seasons now and managed 3 AFL games.
And people want to top McCarthy and Hartman!
And injured for 2 years. The guy hasn't really had the opportunity.

To me there has been 2 people in the VFL this year that know they are on borrowed time, and they've tried to play out of their skin because of it.
One is Cowan and the other is Burbury.

I've thought Burbury would not get upgraded. But I think we may need the goal sneak type in 2 years.

I agree P. But Brown is not a Gorilla type player - so even though he is our only real KPD player we have presently he is not a Lonergan type.

I hope we keep Brown as I think he has potential. Downside is he looks a tad slow and will never be a true KP player for the next 3 years at least - if ever. But he is nice mark, a good kick, is tall and seems to have developed some decent reading of the play.

I am all for training up Blicavs to see if he can be a Lonergan type defender with a bit more run. Then at least we have 2 possible KPD players available.

A little bit maybe. But without the speed.
It will come to me one day.
Im yet to see the type of magic that would compare , but he reminds me more of early SJ than a Motlop or Varcoe. He looks to run heavy , and is no looking great athlete. But one can see he has footy talent. Early on I wondered if SJ was athletic enough and its the same when I see Hartman. He needs a huge lift in his tank , a big couple of PS , a big in gym effort to become strong in body and he then may become an inspired pick.
At the moment he looks like a handy player borrowed from South Barwon

Now this is going to seem racist..... Who was the aboriginal half back at west coast in the early / mid 90's?
