If players are banned for half the season, they should miss out the whole damn season...

imagine playing a full strength bombers side in round 12 after 11 clubs got their VFL side
Do you see the problem though?

The AFL have already committed the televising of 9 games per round, the networks may want compensation for this. The rippling affect of the drugs saga is going to affect many Clubs in the AFL.

The best case scenario, is that the Essendon team forfeits 2015 and they field a team (no druggies) each week to offer match practice to other teams.

Then this is the best case scenario that we head down...

they have 22 on their list now that weren't involved in the programme... they can field a team...

be lenient and let them upgrade another 10 or so from their VFL only list...

But do posters see the problem at hand with the Dons fielding a weak team.

Every Club will want to play them twice and those that dont are really disadvantaged.

Should the Dons get the ANZAC DAY match next year, fielding a shitty team because of drugs?

It'd just be like having GWS again, so nothing they can do about that.

It will be interesting if we play them twice thats for sure. Play the Dons and GWS twice and thats four wins with only about 8 to go to play in the finals.

I hope they do get banned for a significant amount of time in order to be a deterrent to all Clubs. The message needs to be loud and clear by ASADA.

If the players get less than a season ban, it will be ridiculous for the competition. I'm expecting it to be 1 year at least.

Then the AFL just have to give each team one game against them, and the bottom 4 from last year get 2.

Essendon made their bed now lie in it - field a team of no-ones and see how your crowds go. See how your #StandByHird hash tags go now. No way should they get a year off. If they don't wanna play give someone else their spot in the competition. Suck it up and cop your whack.

Last thing I would say that Essendon cannot get a draft advantage out of this - finishing last and getting pick 1 would be a reward. Maybe banned from round 1 of the draft?

big ******* deal IMO, every single decision the AFL has made that has been to the detriment of the game has been in an attempt to make themselves more money.

they can split the bill with the bombers.

EDIT: or as others say, you rub them out for the whole season, easy

Any compassion for the players? Serious question.
I have had the view (before we drafted Paddy) that the club should be punished, not the players.
Had the same view about Tippett as well, that the club should be punished. I recall being a guy in my 20s and if my employer who I trusted gave me whatever the Essendon players were given, or they put a contract in front of me I probably would have done it.
In my opinion Essendon should be crippled at an Administration and coaching level, the players probably were unaware of what they were doing.

If Essendon players miss games in the season proper, they should be allowed to field a team for TV purposes/match practice both before and after the main guys return, however, NO EFC matches should count for points or percentage at any stage…it's just too unfair. Would need to be creative tinkering with teams who were due to play Essendon twice somehow playing an additional game to ensure they also play 22 (could be an odd one out though)

Then they get the last picks in every draft round.

Except in sport players absolutely are responsible for what goes into their bodies. Yes players trust clubs and their staff. But they have been naive in the extreme. When concerns about injections from the playing group arose, they really should have gone to ASADA rather than the club... the club just organised consent forms. ASADA would have stopped it. Players would have a better case to avoid bans if they took concerns, which must have been serious, to someone qualified to give advice.

None. Zero. Zip.

Ryder et al should get the 2 year max, but we know they won't, but the absolute final responsibility lies with the athlete. Ben Johnson didn't get to weasel out of it because his coach unknowingly gave him steroids leading up to the 88 Olympics.

They've taken a banned substance, ignorance is not a defence.

Very much agree with this. It is strange that 34(?) of them went along with it though. If it was 4 or 5 it would appear more sinister for those players, but such a large group and it becomes questionable. Is it possible that all 34(?) are drug cheats and villains? Seems hard to believe.

I sense your opinion in this matter is somewhat biased and coloured by the fact you have Paddy and Monfries that could miss as much as 2 years.

It wasn't only young rookie players who went along with it, all bar 2 did , its unbelievable that 95% of them did , but they did , so in no way can they be absolved of guilt. Drug taking is a thilthy scourge in society and sport , one sure fire way of losing the battle is to go down the , ( didn't mean it , was forced to , had a poor upbringing ) excuses track . This is a perfect moment for the AflAsada to make a no nonsence statement.

You can end this practice quite easily. We all agree there is to many Victorian clubs in this league. Kill two birds with the one stone. Noone will try this shit again if they know penalty is death.

Also, Whatever penalty Ryder gets, the two draft picks Essendon got for him, should get the same ban. Essendon should be made to pay if Port are penalized.

Not villains. Naive. But being naive has never been a defense. Nor should it be.

1 year bans. That is an appropriate wake up to players about peptides. It is also a serious disincentive for clubs to push the envelope into experimenting.
