Pearce relies on his teammates to give him space. At Port most of the time he was there we were shit and the players didn't do that. At Freo. he usually gets help, but lots of pressure today.

Though how do the Dockers fans in WA reconcile they are going ok with Lyon with they play a game style that makes you want to stick a fork in your eye? There's been plenty of defensive champion sides in the past (West Coast 92 and 94) worth watching, but success or not how can anyone say they enjoy their games?!

The way they were puffing out their chests on the Bay, even after that most pathetic of GF performances..karma was sure to come back and give them an almighty push back into reality..one good year doesn't make a champion team. Most have disappeared now, only a few come on to make a bit of a show of it every now and then.

Lyon did very well to get a mediocre side (his words) to a Grand Final last year, covering for a lack of real talent with an uber-defensive gamestyle that turns players into automatons and blunts the effectiveness of the opposition through wave after wave of low skilled big bodied assaults.

It's a taxing style though, and with his now infamous lack of developing young talent, the Dockers will probably be set for a decade in the doldrums St Kilda style once their star trio retire, sadly forced to play out the end of their careers in a gameplan that doesn't allow individual talent to shine, and has taken the game to some of its lowest ever depths.

Would as many teams have adopted a defensive game style if no team had never won a flag with it? Would Paul Roos be considered a genius, messiah and the best coach in the AFL if he hadn't won a flag?

But no team has won a flag since with that style of ultra defensive game. Saints came close but they were ultimately beaten on the day by more attacking sides. Even Sydney's win in 2012 whilst still defensive was more attacking than their 2005/06 model

Hawthorn and Geelong have won 5 of the last 7 flags and they both play an attractive style. Collingwood won in 2010 on the back of manic pressure on the ball carrier to force turnovers and score on the rebound which they did heavily

Our legacy from that period was the importance of a dominant midfield and a dependable back 6

Still reckon Freo's style is flag worthy, they just have a D-grade forward line.

Before that Lyon was at Carlton with Woosha. I think they were under David Parkin.
