Started a new thread to discuss everything non-Eagles in AFL.
I've noticed that other club forums have made this a closed group from all who were non-supporters of the club.
I don't think we had such a restriction and it worked alright so I'll leave it up to the mods to edit the title if they wish to.

I am a bit amazed that Luke Hodge made it to 33 on the list of Australia's best athletes.
IMO everything they say about Hodge applies doubly to someone like Keiren Jack (although I rate Hodge's leadership slightly higher than Jack).
However, Jack has far out-performed Hodge the last two years.
I guess it goes to show how important perception is.
Hodge at 33 when Pendlebury is at 54 is quite an anomaly.

Theoretically getting full seasons into Sandilands and Pavlich should make a difference.
But their key forwards are still shocking and Gumbleton and Apeness don't really change that.

Well they are a team who will probably make the GF just as long as they finish top 4 at the least, they remind a lot of Sydney where to them it's not an absolute requirement for them to finish top 2 to win the flag (as opposed to us, we really do depend on it). Their flag to lose IMO. To be honest, I'd hate for them to lose another GF. A prelim loss would be great or missing the finals entirely.

I think it'll be a lot harder for Fremantle this time around. Like all GF teams, they have less time to prepare for the new season but they'll also be faced with the problem of going from the highest rotating team in the AFL to under whatever the cap is. There's no way of telling how big a deal that will be for Fremantle.

Then there's the "harder" draw and the possibility that a few more coaches will finally start copying the ulta-successful Lyon style.

That is true but I do believe he has put things in place that get him to the big stage. 2 out of the 3 times it has been only the players letting him down.

That's the problem. In Grand Finals he is going up against coaches whose tactical mastery is as sound as his and it leaves a level playing field; in Grand Finals you need motivators as much as you need innovators.

He must be a pretty good motivator to get his players so well drilled.

Not that players would need much motivating in a GF.

Nope. One sat up and begged, rolled over for a tummy scratch and they played dead. Won't even be there next year.

Lyon's discipline hides more than a few who are average at best. Mundy's a better player than I ever gave him credit for, the kid from Claremont that put on 20kgs and pulled the broomstick out of his arse goes OK and the snorkel provides a bit of inspiration. After that, meh.

Isn't it good, Norwegian wood.

Traditionalists will hate it, but it will make for better TV viewing and identifying players easier as well. Although the inevitable get name of favorite player on jumper then he leaves club/switches number will occur and people will feel outraged.

E.g. imagine how many Franklin 23 or Ablett 29 jumpers would have been burned in recent times if this was in place

I find the sponsors being on the guernseys to be far worse than the thought of adding names. Obviously realise why they're there but damn they are ugly imo. The South Freo guernsey these days looks so crappy covered in them.

Hate it. Terrible idea. Aussie rules jumpers aren't like soccer or rugby jerseys, they're skinnier around the chest and back. There isn't enough room to have text large enough that it's readable and small enough to fit the longer names in (Hoskin-Elliot, Kolodjashnij). Not having names on the back has never been a problem in the past and it isn't a problem now.

Maybe when revenue peaks with jumpers with names they could solve space issue by playing with nicknames on the back ala a recent NBA game.

I'm sure the AFL is very concerned that players moving clubs might cause people to purchase new jumpers more often.

No ones forcing people to buy a jumper with a name on the back. If you get them from the club usually you can get one made with just the number on the back.
