Boak - Pick 5
Wines - Pick 7
Hartlett - Pick 4
Wingard - Pick 6
Polec - Was a Pick 5
Ebert - Was a Pick 13

That's how you assemble a top end midfield, make the most of your high end draft picks and be lucky enough to have a few others fall into your lap cheaper than what they were originally worth.
They didn't draft Polec or Ebert. They nabbed them for second round picks.

Boak, Hartlett, Wines and Wingard fair enough. However for a comparison, pick 7 Sheppard, pick 13 Ebert, pick 19 Swift, pick 23 Stevens, pick 23 Newman, pick 22 Weedon.

16 Matthew Lobbe
28 Marlon Motlop
22 Jackson Trengrove
8 John Butcher
9 Andrew Moore
16 Jasper McMillan-Pittard
16 Ben Jacobs

Big difference between those and their top 7 picks. Gotta have those high picks to really get the cream, helps when you have enough draft picks to burn others as well.

We've picked Masten, Naitanui and Gaff as our only really high picks.

That's why I said they were high picks, not ones drafted by Port necessarily. Polec cost them Pick 14 so wasn't really a second round either.

Yep compared to our midfield

Priddis - Rookie Draft
Wellingham - Was originally rookie draft
Sheppard - Pick 7
Gaff - Pick 3
Masten - Pick 3
Selwood - Pick 22
Shuey - Pick 18
Rosa - Pick 29
Hutchings - Pick 60 (Previously rookie draft by St Kilda)
Sheed - Pick 11

So only 3 real high midfield picks, of which Sheppard was a bust. The rest are not of that very high end quality.

Both have scary midfield talent, but then so does Port.

How have they capitalised on their down period, in terms of midfield draftees, trades and retention and we have not?

Boak, Ebert, Wines, Hartlett, Polec, Wingard (part time) and Impey (part time), looks pretty fierce. Heck it nearly stacks up to the expansion sides on the basis of raw talent.

They've acquired Ebert and Polec in the same we have recruited Wellingham and Yeo albiet at a cheaper cost in terms of draft pics traded

Ebert is the best of the players we lost to a rival but it's worth pointing out that Port also lost Shaun Burgoyne in the period that list of names was put together. They also lost Pearce to free agency.

Impey has played one game so thats an early call even if he performed pretty well

Wines and Wingard they nailed those picks in a way we didn't capitalise on the pick we used on Sheppard (i've posted elsewhere how the 2009 draft was a shocker for us)

They've also focused their early picks on mids (with success) were we've acquired the likes of Naitanui on Darling (and if you're stretching back to Boak thats the same draft we got Emac)

In short they've got their homesick players cheaper than us, have lost better quality players than us and their draft suceesses have been midfielders but not so much talls where we have been the reverse resulting in Port having a stronger complement of mids without being as strong in the ruck and KPPs

Oh and that midfield doesnt come close to what the Suns are assembling - Swallow, OMeara, Bennell, Martin, Prestia, Hall and Ablett as icing is going to scare the beejesus out of teams in a couple of years time

Yes, yes he certainly was.

I'm seriously jealous of Port's midfield. Still very young and all those guys know how to kick a goal or 2 as well.

Goals from last year:
Boak - 20
Wingard - 43 (albeit from HF)
Hartlett - 16
Ebert - 13 (17 goals in 2012)
Wines - 8 (nailed 2 crucial goals in the collingwood final last year)
Polec - n/a (8 goals from 12 games in 2012, starting to look good now)

Besides from Masten and maybe Shuey or Wellingham, none of our midfielders really have a knack for finding the big sticks(Looking at you Gaff).

Yeah Gaff and Rosa should kick more running from the wings. It's where we miss someone like Embley, able to swing forward and be damaging. Scooter looks terrified whenever he gets a shot at goal, I don't understand how kicking for goal can be made to look so difficult.

I'm hopeful that having Shuey and Wellingham on the park this year will help somewhat. Scooter was also injured a bit last year as well.

Bluey McKenna gets a contract extension at GC.

Anyone else absolutely loving how well he's doing? He's universally admired and I can't ever recall his coaching or character being questioned - and nor should it.

Terrific player at West Coast and while he's got a great list at GC, he's starting to squeeze out the best in those players, great coaching effort on Saturday and I hope he stays at the top for a while.

I just get the feeling he'll be coaching us one day. Adam Simpson may leave for the North Melbourne job in future (which may not be that far away tbh) so headhunting Bluey may be on the agenda soon.

Always thought he would make a good coach so it's good to see him doing well at Gold Coast - I did think he might not get to see enjoy his hard work in the early days and have someone else come in and take the glory as the team naturally improved

Good on the Suns for standing by him

Early on in his tenure there was talk he'd be replaced but i'm glad they stuck with him. Needed time to have the list develop before being judged imo.

Just because players played at a club, doesn't mean they have to coach there. Malthouse, Sheedy, Matthews, Eade, Blight, Clarkson, Chris Scott, Longmire.

No doubt, it's probably just that presser recently in which Simpson mentioned he'll always be a shinboner at heart. If he's successful with us & Scott continues his fine *cough* form, it may be seen as a golden opportunity for both he and NM.

I wrote earlier in the thread how happy I am for him..and how proud of him (#373) I wish our Bluey ultimate success :hearts:

I'm sure McKenna thinks he's an Eagle for lyf. Eade a Hawk etc. Leigh Matthews has stated its a different gig as a coach to a player. We'll win Simpson over and he'll wonder why he never had yellow next to his royal blue as a player.

You don't captain, win premierships and play 300 games for a club and suddenly cut them off because you're coaching another team.

But I don't think he'll do a Voss and jump ship just because he could coach the team he played for, he'd do his career more harm than good.
