Geelong had 15 goals from 53 inside 50s (28%). Against Sydney we had 9 goals from from 48 (18%). In the GF we kicked 8 goals from 44 i50s (18%). Hawthorn had 45 (just one more than us) but kicked 3 more goals (25%).
That's why we can't beat Hawthorn.
For a top 4 side our forward structure is very bad. We rely on smashing the opponent at contested ball to win. In a relatively even game (like vs Sydney on the weekend), we regularly lose.

When we were playing our best footy last year, we were actually scoring at a good rate for our inside 50 count. Hawks have shown that they're vulnerable to teams that can create attacking moves from stoppages and turnovers. The reason that they keep teams to lowish scores is because they tend to hold possession so well, it's not really their defence in a general sense (thought that goes alright of course) - but if you can break them open just a touch, they will leak goals (see Dons a few weeks ago) .... that is against most top teams, but we just can't seem to capitalise enough. Now with Walters out, Balla and Mayne in ordinary to poor form. Unless we get some scoring power from somewhere, we're not going to get over these sorts of teams.
