Geelong had 15 goals from 53 inside 50s (28%). Against Sydney we had 9 goals from from 48 (18%). In the GF we kicked 8 goals from 44 i50s (18%). Hawthorn had 45 (just one more than us) but kicked 3 more goals (25%).

That's why we can't beat Hawthorn.

For a top 4 side our forward structure is very bad. We rely on smashing the opponent at contested ball to win. In a relatively even game (like vs Sydney on the weekend), we regularly lose.
It's never that simple, but you're pretty close to getting to a serious nub of the issue - though I'm not sure if I'd use the term 'very bad'.

When we were playing our best footy last year, we were actually scoring at a good rate for our inside 50 count. Hawks have shown that they're vulnerable to teams that can create attacking moves from stoppages and turnovers. The reason that they keep teams to lowish scores is because they tend to hold possession so well, it's not really their defence in a general sense (thought that goes alright of course) - but if you can break them open just a touch, they will leak goals (see Dons a few weeks ago) .... that is against most top teams, but we just can't seem to capitalise enough. Now with Walters out, Balla and Mayne in ordinary to poor form. Unless we get some scoring power from somewhere, we're not going to get over these sorts of teams.

I reckon it does help us,we just have to beat the cats, hawks at home to capitalise on today's result.
Yep, plus they will both drop more games before the season is out.
Geelong has Port in Adelaide next week, which could be a loss, plus Swans at SCG in a few weeks.

And there is a return Hawks v Geelong game in R22.

Richmond will beat Hawthorn, watch this space. There will definitely be an upset or two, that goes for us as well.

Richmond might have beaten them a few times over the last few years, but I would be surprised if Hawthorn didn't absolutely destroy them this week. I reckon a 10 goal hiding is on the cards.

Ess playing on colls weakness in their back 6 pumping it in their as much as possible. Still enjoying watching essendon play as much as lance Armstrong ride. Just makes me feel a little sick watching players running around who have taken performance enhancing peptides (to their knowledge or not) with no punishment or games missed.

Some unusual calls so far, both ways, players often seem to be confused. RTB will be pleased if we get similar tonight ;)

Watson front on tackle after the Collingwood player just slipped another tackler...how was that not holding the ball?

Luke Farmer, Ray Chamberlain, Bald Nicholls.

It's a little concerning the AFL seems to think these guys are the cream of the crop when it comes to umpires, the positive is that we miss out on all three this week I guess. Over umpired game but it's a contest at least, should remain close until late in the 4th hopefully.

I am rapt that they got this game.
