lol so true

Many of the older high flyers would have had a field day in today's game, Snr, Modra, Capper, Barker. . . I would have loved to see Fremantle's defence drop back to try and contain those kind of jumpers who not only had the quickest first step in the history of the game but they didn't let a poor game get in the way of their confidence to fly for those high marks whereas today's forwards, they lose confidence early on in and then become completely redundant and any attempt to try and take a pack mark is suddenly out of the question.
Capper could be held quiet on the scoreboard for a half, 3 quarters but he'd still be jumping at everything that came his way and with today's rules and interpretations. . . blocking off the ball, chopping the arm, holding the jumper, he'd have slot 10 goals just as he says (maybe not 10 but more like 5) :D
Not just that but they'd be in intensive care every week with the number of knee caps to the head they would get. Its one thing to fill the space in todays game where the chance of getting smashed in considerably less. Back then, filling a while with Plugger, Bazza, Modra, Snr or Dunstall on the lead was a different prospect….

Ask Johnny Gastev….

yeh, seemed to be going well and I think we all thought this was going to be good but something shifted dramatically so whether they are keeping tabs on all the legal happenings going on in the USA in regards to the head/concussion/NFL etc, who knows. They are obviously covering their arses for the future at the expense of what our great game has always been about.
(then again, it's not my head that is copping a whack every weekend as the players do, so easy to say that sitting behind the fence)
Fair to say the NFL's 785 million dollar offer to settle all current claims getting knocked back on grounds its not enough got the attention of many people… AFL amongst them….

Does not make the inconsistency any less frustrating….

Just out of curiosity, do you think Hawkins should have got off of his hit to Langford's bread basket? That was behind play which you would consider worse than slightly late in play...
Hawkins' was a hit to the body in the attempt to shepherd. Gibson's was a hit to the head in a late attempt to spoil. Totally different. I thought the head was supposed to be sacrosanct.

I didn't realise hitting someone in the guts well off the ball was known as a shepherd. The other was in play and the slightest of late, let's not forget he still actually ended up touching the ball going through.

I thought hits behind play were supposed to be frowned upon.

Just to reiterate I don't think Hawkins should have been given anything just find it funny that you think Gibson should be

Well off the ball? Let's look at it again, shall we?

Look at 0:18 of that clip. Miles off the ball indeed.

Now, let's look at Gibson's again.

Yeah, definitely deserved a reprimand for that elbow to the back of the head.

Yeah it is. Mark Blicavs got dropped in the Hawks game last year ( not the PF) in the first 1/4 about 50 meters off the ball by the Hawks ruck of the time. Left the ground under the support of the training staff and could not close his jaw properly. Bobby_ has a clip of it in his collection.
No Hawks player was sighted or even reprimanded. Not wanting to start the shitfight stuff but Hawkins arm shepherd was not a stand alone incident nor was it behind play.

The clear hatred for Hawthorn is strong in you Winty. Would love to See your reaction if a Geelong player had of done the same thing as Gibson. I bet you would be annoyed that it was even looked at...

No the reality is he would be rubbed out for 6 weeks.. Kelly got 3 weeks and Sj got 3 weeks last year for bumps. We are very well versed in losing players to the MRP - head scratchers a plenty… We are used to it now...

Hatred of Hawthorn? Laughable. What I do hate though is gross inconsistencies in the MRP/Tribunal. We've had blokes rubbed out for four weeks in the past for simply standing their ground and having an opponent slide head first into their legs (Stokes vs Port in the NAB Cup back in 2007). It doesn't surprise me anymore that the MRP has a different rule for us than they do anyone else, but it should never have been that way in the first place.

A bit like boards I guess,Hawk supporters are given a good go here and that's as it should be,but venture over there and it's card first ask questions latter.

Absolutely nothing in either as far as I'm concerned

But that doesn't mean 1 is not going to be looked at harsher compared to the other... the MRP love to ping anyone for touching the head... so Gibson will always be looked at there

I hate the inconsistencies as well but just because your players apparently copped a harsh whack in the past doesn't mean current ones should be.

The problem is that there is no precedent, its a complete joke that they don't. Having precedent automatically makes the MRP/Tribunal more consistent.

I agree with that, the problem was we were getting constant and blatant trolls from almost every single comment from a non-Hawk supporter. That's not to say that there were some rational comments and discussion with others but it was just getting smashed non-stop with trolls. Again though I can't speak for this thread as I haven't really been through it too much

Billie Smedts got a reprimand in the preseason, didn't he, for a late spoil that made head contact?

oh ok no I didn't see that. I saw Tomahawk tapped him in the stomach and he then had to come off the ground gasping for air but nothing beforehand
I might've just got it mixed up- will go and watch the replay of that quarter to see if it was just the same incident replayed from different angles.

I found the problem- There was a few minutes between the initial footage of Langford coming off the field and the replay of TH's shepherd, which caused him to leave the ground. My mind was playing tricks and made the elapsed time a lot longer and so I thought they were two separate incidents. The 'hanging judges' took quite a while to find out what had happened ;)

Sorry- I hope you didn't go looking for an explanation yourself. :(

The reaction of the crowd and commentary team to the Gibson incident tell the whole story. There were gasps and "ooohs" spilling from everyone spontaneously.

Get your sick-bags ready folks...

Just watching the latest Talking Footy and the interview with Nathan Buckley was really interesting. For the first time in my life, I actually saw this guy as an impressive human being, and one with a dry sense of humour as well.

Regret watching it now... ;)

Hated him as a player, but love listening to him speak as a coach. If nothing else the way he just reals off statistics is pretty impressive...and shows he's a massive nerd.

If you really want to feel sick, go and listen to Clarkson talking about post-game stuff....

Saw this stat in Inside Football today, and thought it was staggering.

In Melbourne's first 6 games in 1897, they'd scored a combined total of 53.56.374. In their first 6 games this season, they've scored 45.55.325.

Yes, even in the modern times of professional athletes, improvement in tactics and the like, the modern day Dees are currently being outscored by teams from 117 years ago.
