Before Neeld came you mean? Wouldnt think so, given the record thumping from us was while Bailey was coach. Something has gone horribly wrong in their development system, thats for sure. Nobody had all that many complaints about their drafting of the likes of Watts, Trengrove and Scully at the time but those players just havent come on at all.
Imagine how those #1 draft picks would've come on at the Cats!!! What a waste of talent.

I'd take Trengove in a heart beat. He's their most promising youngster out of the lot imo. Put him in Geelong next year and he'd breakout to become an elite midfielder.
Has the marking, toughness and skill-set of a young Jimmy Bartel.
I'd be looking more at another Northern discard or homesick kid…. Im pretty sure they have to start shortening their list numbers in line with the rest of the comp. Not expecting a Caddy esq quality ( would be great) but something mid pack that could turn well for us….

I have no specific name in mind but there surely will be 20 - 50 game kid that sees the writing on the wall with ALL those Rd1 picks on those lists….

Caddy still needs a lot of improvement. He's not the finished product yet.

They won seven games in 2011 prior to 186 - a terrible result, but ultimately one game. Neeld won four games in 2012 (only one of which was against a non-expansion side) and Melbourne only won two last year. Their percentage was 85.27 at the end of 2011. It dropped to 67.49% in 2012 and 54.07% last year. By any measure, Melbourne got significantly worse under Neeld.

I know it's a small issue, but no wonder the AFL are off to a slow start...

Had a play around with that, and ended up with the first week of the finals being Geelong-Hawthorn and Freo-West Coast in the qualifying finals, and Essendon-Richmond as one of the elimination finals. AFL would be happy with that.

Right now he just looks a plodder. Slow and not strong over the ball, solid disposal but nothing brilliant. That's not a recipe to be a quality player. I'm not sure what's happened since his first year when he was great but perhaps he's never made it over his bout of OP. Just looks a shadow of the player he used to.

If we were to go for any of Melbourne's high picks I think Watts would be the one I'd go for. Not that he's been impressive but there are some obvious attributes to work with. His disposal is exceptional. He actually looks a bit of grunt and a couple of big preseasons away from being a quality player. If we could get him for our 2nd pick I'd take the risk in a heartbeat.

We're good enough to produce solid players on our own. If they see the writing on the wall at GC or GWS then they're probably no better than our fringe players either. I think we should stick to quality players who are homesick like Caddy where we're more tempting than other clubs. Possibly some of GWS's talls who were high draft picks but just can't get in the team based on team balance (Jaksch, McCarthy, Corr or Plowman).

Or you could say they were on the decline when Neeld took over... :p

Wouldn't touch any of melb players , even rivers has only been a solid back up player.

Thank god we fixed up our player development and have Wells... Terrible terrible club MFC and honestly think another 3 years of putrid performances will result in their terminated or merger.

I give them zero chances of ever coming good.

Imagine if Freo and West Coast finish top 2 and get the home finals - AFL would be shitting themselves.

Wouldn't mind Jesse Hogan before he gets fully Melbourned.

If he's smart he'll leave before they can do any damage to his development.

I mean they pay a coach $1 million a year and he doesn't even turn up for pre season training and only signs on for two years.

That screams commitment to the playing group.

I'm pretty sure the Libs are building this East-West tunnel because the AFL have held secret talks with them about the 2017 merger of the Dees and the Dogs.

Really?? I didn't realise that. Maybe he had prior commitments and it was part of his contract that he didn't have to drop everything to make p/s training- who knows, but that does sound a bit poor.

As for the signing on for 2 years, I think he was quite clear that he would only do it short term and hopefully put things into place with a successor and a strong support group, to enable the team to have success, not necessarily during his term there. Sounded like he was happy not to take any glory in the future but sincerely wanted to move the group out of the abyss.

I'm not sure if this is the place to put this but Damien Barrett is calling for the AFL to revamp their Brownlow eligibility on the back of Fyfe's suspension.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-04-01/brownlow-unfair

NATHAN Fyfe deserved the two-week ban slapped on him by the Match Review Panel this week.
Yes, it was a harsh outcome for an act which was accidental. Yes, such an incident only 12 months ago was ignored by the same panel. And yes, Fyfe emerged equally as sore as the man with whom he collided, Gold Coast’s Michael Rischitelli.
The MRP was right to say Fyfe’s conduct was negligent, the impact medium, the contact high.

.....and.....

But while it is right that Fyfe was suspended, it is wrong that he is ineligible for the Brownlow Medal for such an action.
Given his offence was clearly an accident, the two matches he will miss would be sufficient punishment, and his current form would suggest that there’s six Brownlow Medal votes that he would have otherwise received in the next fortnight.
The AFL needs to urgently review the matter of Brownlow eligibility as a result of the change in interpretation of incidents such as the Fyfe-Rischitelli clash.
