Interesting. If they were prepared to use a pick on this kid then I wonder now how many picks they are intending to use come draft day? Maybe they just rated him?
I saw him in one game.

In the first half I was less than impressed in what I saw. Really didn't see much that floated my boat.

But in the second half he showed he had a few tricks. Still very raw but he has a bit of talent. Club probably figured, for pick 70, he was worth a dash.

If he didn't work out, no great loss.

If the did work out, he's a steal.

Sounds a bit Hartmanish

Ladies and gents,

Looking for a volunteer for another National Draft preview this year.

Will give thejester right of first refusal.
Happy to do it if no one else wants to. When would you need it by SJ?

thejester , a question for you. P15 or p21 and p25.. Who do you feel we can get with those picks .

I am not TJ but I would take the latter offer, while I don't think this draft overall is as good as some the last few years, it is very very even after the first 6 or so so two slightly later picks is a bit better than one earlier pick.

I'm beginning to think I'm in the minority as I reckon there is a bit of depth in the draft this year.

I looked at the invites to the state screenings and thought there were a number of handy players attending that.

I agree with the assumption that the spread across the top 7 or 8 is pretty even though.

With Bundy gone, I’d love to see us pick up Dean Gore from SA as a ready-to-go replacement:

Dean Gore: H 183cm, W 86kg
Strong inside midfielder, very capable outside game also. Has two years of senior football experience with Sturt in the SANFL, including six league games this year (in which he had 39 tackles).
At the combine: top 10 for kicking efficiency and standing vertical jump, first in goal kicking test. Recorded a 14+ beep test and sub 3sec 20m sprint.

He is much the same proportions as Selwood at his weight and height.
With the kicking efficiency and goal kicking tests, are they also tested under some sort of pressure or are these simply "witches hats" type drills at a leisurely pace?

I haven't seen the goal kicking, but the kicking efficiency test involves the player being thrown a ball, a number is called out that corresponds to a cone and they have to kick to it.

Saw most of SA's U18s games this year and he really stood out, much like Luke Dunstan last year.

Got to be careful what you wish for...I wanted to trade back into the draft for an early 20 pick.

Anyway, The Pivotonian we might well now look at Blakeley with 21. Would be a sort of sweet and sour irony if it turns out that way!

Piv seems a big wrap for him , but we seem to like the SA boys dont we.

We had clearance issues prior to Christensen leaving and that now will only be more pronounced. You'd think we will target guys that can win their own footy. Blakeley, Gore, Cockatoo and Neal-Bullen will probably all come into calculations.

It's hard because Christensen wins it inside but also has the speed to get outside, so it's hard to replace him with one player. Especially if Varcoe goes we will be light on for speed and run and carry, but we also need genuine Dunstan type clearance winners.

Little early to speculate but assuming Varcoe goes for Clark then we will go to the draft with 14,21 and 35. Who do you want?!

For me - Goddard (14), Blakely/Cockatoo (21), Gore (35)

Or Weller (14), Blakeley/Cockatoo (21), O McDonald (35)

Who we want and who we get...salt and pepper.

My question on Cockatoo would be is he capable of handling the consistent work load. Brilliant upside no doubt. Weller most likely gone.

I think Wells will stay with what he knows works , and he will probably go for guys like Lamb and Langford.

Lamb doesn't float my boat. Looks like an inconsistent, moody type to me. Langford looks to have potential but will take time. De Goey and Ahern are two more that have appeal to me if Weller is gone at 14.

Not really mine either but 193, killed the beep and is apparently a guy who can do something that's unique. SJ ? I think will look at run very closely. He may suit the crowed game of AFL more than u18's.

Might be in the name but reminds me of that other Lamb, Jed. I'd prefer we go for a more conservative option with our first and think a Weller/Ahern/DeGoey type are more likely to succeed if we use it on a mid. With our second, I'm not sure whether I'd use it on another mid like Blakely or Neal-Bullen with exposed form or use it on a more speculative type like Cockatoo who you couldn't help but be impressed with in his game the other week.

Of all the players I've seen in the draft Cockatoo, in game style, probably is the most similar to Christensen, in being able to play both inside and outside. He looks more explosive. I think he's worth a punt. He would at least bring a bit of excitement, expectation and x-factor to our club!

Have faith in kolo?

Hard one now that Christensen is gone. If he had stayed my inclination may have been to go tall (I've liked Goddard for a while) with our first and then use subsequent picks on mids. But I think we now have to prioritize mids and rely on JK to be one to replace Rivers or Lonergan. We still need another KPD but do you now use a later pick on a McDonald? Maybe you just go best available at 14 and then determine your later picks on more of a needs basis?

Interesting that quite a few teams appear to be comfortable trading out of this draft. Tigers now looking to take Trengove and happy to drop their first rounder. Brisbane comfortable trading away their first pick. Adelaide have also been mentioned tonight as another team prepared to use their pick 10 to acquire Trengove. Is this draft perhaps not as good as in the past?
