Draft Review 2014 - Redo the 2014 AFL Draft

Yep. To be fair most melbourne fans have been pretty critical of him this year, it is more the media running with a lot of undeserved hype.
Overhyped, certainly. Overrated is a touch early, given they're all only 22 and Petracca has done an ACL. 2019 is big for him, if he doesn't take the step up then I fear we have another Colin Sylvia type.

I'm a big wrap for DeGoey but not a chance I'd be taking him ahead of Andrews

See this is just ridiculous delusional absolutism. Harris Andrews is an elite young defender, JDG is probably the best midfield/forward out of that lot and both have the potential to be the best player in the game. Probably JDG more so because I've never heard of a defender being the best player in the game, Rance being the closest thing to that that I can remember.

Truth be known if clubs had a choice I'd be confident most would chose JDG because defenders are easier to find, even though Andrews is elite. But that's just me.

Everything you said there was fine, apart from your overdramatic, hyperbolic opening sentence. Way to make a statement right off the bat I guess?

Not a ridiculous statement either way to say you'd prefer one over the other. Good mids are easier to find than good KPPs.

Fair argument but I think you have to look at importance to a teams structure when looking at whether or not you would draft a mid before a KPD.
Personally I would draft a Harris Andrews over a JDG everytime.

Take 2011 Geelong, they lost the best Midfielder in the comp but nothing changed structure-wise and they won a flag. If they lost a Scarlett or Harry Taylor it could have been a different story.

The only sticking point with drafting a KPD is they are harder to find and it's harder to predict whether they will make it at the next level, but knowing what we know now, Andrews over JDG or Heeney every time.

A 202cm KPD with the build, marking and spoiling coordination, kicking skills (he might not be an elite kick, but he is a good kick on both feet especially for a KPD), positioning and leadership skills makes Andrews potentially a pretty special player.

Not saying he will definitely be better than DeGoey or some of the other players. But right now IMO he is the best of the lot and has the potential to remain the best.

Degoey is number 1 for mine. Andrews is a gun but big bodied mids with pace who can play forward are extremely valuable .

Is De Goey necessarily ahead of Heeney? Those two & Andrews could all lay claims to #1 and you'd be getting a star regardless.

I agree with your view though that you take a matchwinning mid/fwd ahead of a key back, even though Andrews is very good.

1. de goey
2. heeney
3. brayshaw
4. lever
5. petracca
6. andrews
7. mclean
8. mcgovern
9. langdon
10. blakely
11. maynard
12. ANB
13. Weller
14. steele
15. marchbank

pretty tough to rank after 7

Not the greatest draft in recent years
1st rd:
1-Andrews
2-Heeney
3-Petracca
4-Brayshaw
5-Lever
6-Wright
7-McLean
8-McGovern
9-De Goey
10-Daniel
11-Moore
12-Marchbank
13-Miller
14-Langford
15-Melican
16-Lambert
17-Butler
18-McKenna

Outside the top 10, there aren't many who would walk straight into sides.

This draft is changing rapidly.
JDG would now be easily in the top 5 (moving to the top with a bullet).
Wright shouldn’t even be in the top 15 at this stage.

Brayshaw now much better than Petracca.

Who would you prefer to have at essendon?
Would there be a team that would take Petracca over Andrews based off exposed form? Andrews was in the AA discussion pre injury.

Petracca at no stage played at that level for a period of time to be worthy of the AA discussion. Petracca may become the best from this draft but as it stands Andrews is better.

Would still take Petracca. Mid/forwards like him are way more valuable than defenders. He'll breakout soon and become a top 10 player in the comp. And besides, he's been good up until this point anyway.

Of the players you have listed below Petracca, I would rather have Andrews, Mclean, Mcgovern and Blakely. + Players not listed Wright, Miller, Lambert, Mcdonald and Saad.

Right now I'd have him on par with our Langford, he has shown absolutely nothing but a couple glimpses of what could be. If he was a pick 20 like Langford he wouldn't even be in the discussion.

I disagree. Top end key backs are harder to find.

There are a lot more better mid/forwards going around than Petracca - not may better key backs than Andrews.

Petracca has kicked 12 goals and is behind these mids in 2018 - Beams, Smith, Christenson, Jack Martin, L Taylor, O'Meara, Congilio, Griffen, Boak, Heeney, Tim Kelly, Lambert, Mundy, Bont, Wallis, Wingard, Raynor, Menegola, Walters, Dangerfield, I Smith, Parker, Cripps, Dusty, Zorko. Ziebell, R Gray, JDG, WHE, Caddy. Not in the top 30 goal kicking mids and I would think all would average more than 18 touches.

You would be lucky to name a handful of better key backs this year.

full backs aren't matchwinners (with exception of maybe Rance) and in an era of football where even the bums are decent, matchwinners count for everything.

jdg is clear #1 because to date he has been the biggest matchwinner for his club and projects to be the biggest matchwinner of the bunch in the future and that translates to his enormous price on the open market.

the only reason why petracca is still getting rated top 10 is because of his matchwinning potential. Right now his output is not up to scratch.

I'm a big JDG fan and would personally take him at 1 but you're seriously underating the role of intercept marking talls.

Apart from the 5 or so games he has helped the Pies win, JDG hasn’t shown enough from the rest his games to warrant a #1. Infact id side Brayshaw has had more impact in Melbourne games this season (overall, maybe hasn’t reached the ceiling JDG has, but 38 touches just two weeks ago is nothing to laugh at) than JDG has had for Collingwood and both had pretty similar previous years.

Lever was a key part in a team that dominated almost every game in 2017.

Harris Andrews is definitely the next all time great backman and has shown signs of that well before this year. A lot of talk about how good he was last year and if the team had more success, would probably be recognised as the player from the 2014 draft that had the best year in 2017.

For me Heeney has got to be #1. What can’t the kid do. Hard nut, can take a mark over head, kicks goals. Almost could be the best player for Sydney this year.

In terms of potentially being #1 JDG might have as high as chance as anyone in the future, but after what they have shown I couldn’t say JDG is the best player from this draft. He could be a Danger but he just as easily could not be, without his wake up call this year would he reach the heights he has? Not that it is a penalty to have a wake up call, just shows anything could happen. Regardless his best has been shown in a few games where as others have done it more consistently, so hard to gauge.

1. Heeney
2. Andrews
3. Brayshaw
4. Lever
5. De Goey
