Draft Review 2014 - Redo the 2014 AFL Draft

It's amazing what a few weeks of good form can do. Heeney has been an above-average with shades of elite player for nearly 3 years now, but a couple of on weeks from JDG has him ahead in most lists.

Not sure if people have short memories or only consider the last 6 months when making these lists.

There were signs in the second half of last year DeGoey would explode like this, not sure 6 months is really correct

Depends what you value more, signs or genuinely good performances because Heeney showed the latter and he's showed it since 2016.

If you scroll back, you'll see that all 4 people who either said he's the best or suggested he will end up the best, have Collingwood avatars next to their names.

Petracca going for a torp while trying to hold onto a lead sums him up. Arrogant and uncomposed. I am willing to bet anything he’ll never be an all australian level midfielder.

But he does ‘cool’ NBA hand shakes after a win, so the Melbourne media department will continue to be happy.

Amazingly immature player.

If you go to "redo the draft" threads for years from the last decade - say 2006 and 2007 - you'll find people re-ordering based on the last few weeks' form, so it's hardly surprising that it happens in a thread on a more recent draft.

None of the players vying for "top spots" in 2014 is yet the player they will become (or, if they are, they won't be viewed as near the top by the time their careers end). It may be fun for some to list players in an order, but getting too worked up about the exact ordering seems a bit pointless given how early it is - still - to judge.

1. De Goey
2. Heeney
3. Andrews
4. Mclean
5. Lever
6. Petracca
7. McGovern
8. Brayshaw
9. Moore
10.Wright

Top 10 based on mix of potential and performance to date.

full backs aren't matchwinners (with exception of maybe Rance) and in an era of football where even the bums are decent, matchwinners count for everything.

jdg is clear #1 because to date he has been the biggest matchwinner for his club and projects to be the biggest matchwinner of the bunch in the future and that translates to his enormous price on the open market.

the only reason why petracca is still getting rated top 10 is because of his matchwinning potential. Right now his output is not up to scratch.

I'll come back in a year, And make my list with Langford firmly placed in the top 10.
cant be worse than your top 10 midfielders of the year having 3 Essendon players

Lol what? Where is that - the only place that should be posted is in their delusional pearler thread.

We are going to have another pre season of ess being talked up. Yet we all know how this fairytale ends.

You’d think that Essendon would be kicking arse this year if they had 3 of the top 10 mids on their list...

Essendon fans cream themselves whenever one of their young players does well, but top 10 for Langford isn't an outrageous suggestion. There are a few talls developing that could become great, but outside of the best five or six this draft looks like an open field full of talented kids. Who would have had Brayshaw top 5 12 months ago? Maybe McCartin comes out next season and takes the league by storm? They're all still young enough to make an impact, though someone like Laverde would want to start impressing soon. Saad is nowhere near the top 10 though, good player but there's a reason he was traded for a pick in the 20s and he hasn't actually improved this year - he's done what he's always done but at a club with more media exposure.

Laverde faces an uphill battle to make it as an AFL player let alone top 10 of his draft. He hasn't completed a season uninjured since u/16s and will have stiff competition as a HFF/mid next season with Stringer, Begley, Langford and even Stewart capable of playing a similar role.
