We have a shortage of talls.
Not so long ago I would have argued strongly that we need to retain Waite and Casboult.
Now:
Waite's best is comparable to any tall in the comp.,......but...... he is not worth the risk of signing for
2 years unconditionally on significant coin.
Casboult is not a $500,0000 player, would be irresponsible to give it to him regardless of needing talls.

BUT

We currently need minimum 2 extra talls. If they depart need to find 4 or 5......big ask, particularly
when a couple of other clubs need talls as much as us. Can see our rookie list being topped up with
speculative/developing talls.

At the same time need top end midfield talent, so can't sell the farm. Genuinely fascinated about
this off season.

No love for Sheehan, reckon it was him that hit the 65 metre grass burner to Gibbs at the finish.

Think Buckley will spend most of the preseason turning himself into a midfielder.

Tuohy, Jamison, White
Sheehan, Rowe, Simpson
Buckley, Gibbs, Everitt
Walker, Henderson, Yarran
Casboult, KPF, Menzel
Kreuzer, Murphy, Cripps
Judd, Thomas, Bell, Docherty

Pretty good team Cringle. Only two I would have different would be Graham plus a mid from the trade period if we get one of course.
Graham for White
then (O'rourke if we got him for Bell)

My Crack

B: Tuohy-----------Jamison---------Simpson

H: Docherty--------Rowe-------White

C: Thomas----------Walker---------Yarran

H: Judd-----------Henderson----------Everitt

F: Menzel----------Watson---------Bell

R: Kreuzer, Gibbs, Murphy

Bench: Buckley, Curnow, Graham, Sub: Cripps

Here's my crack on the assumption that we lose Robinson, Garlett, Waite and Casboult.

Weaknesses:
A key defender short, if we were able to draft/trade/develop another Rowe clone we could make Jamison the third tall.
Midfield lacks pace with Thomas, Curnow, Walker, Docherty, Murphy and Gibbs while not slow by any measure but lacks X factor pace which only Buckley and Yarran possess.
Forward line lacks a quality tall, with Watson and Henderson forced to do too much work.

Strengths:
Endurance, Curnow, Judd, Walker and Bell in the elite category for fitness
Settled backline, backline is and will always be the cornerstone of a premiership tilt.
Experience all over the park.

Who isn't?

Buckley is an unknown.

Docherty is good.

Sheehan is pretty good.

Tuohy gets the best small forward every game so he gets harshly scrutinized.
Sheehan, Docherty and Buckley looked promising this year, which is always better then having no new talent coming through but let's be honest we are currently the fifth heaviest scored against back line.
I am of the opinion that we robbed Peter to pay Paul (re Henderson) and it didn't work either way, sure Rowe did well this year on the gorillas but I think I would prefer having a fit Hendo down back (perhaps that was why he wasn't), not necessarily in replace of Rowe but I tend to think he is the thinking/organising footballer we need as the general down back.

Wishes from last year - half a dozen not ticked eg finals, release Gibbs - check, now lets release Yarran, if Sheehan, Docherty or Buckley can do that then Backline sorted. oh yeah - trade 1AW - controversial but not accountable enough for Micks gameplan and doesn't appear suitable up forward anymore - I believe of all our desirable players he has the highest trade value - Operation Boyd!

Therefore up forward one of three things must happen (I will spend summer dreaming all three will happen):
1. CFC employs a competent goal kicking coach for Casboult and he does a Stewart Lowe - starts to convert big grabs to big goals - 2.5 goals a game please
2. Mathew Watson spends the summer working on turning circle, his relationship with Mick and visits a shrink to work on his confidence - 3 goals a game
3. Small forward - how we go from 3 quality small forwards (Betts, Garlett and Yarren) to none is just ..... (Not sure if it was bad luck or bad management or both. Garlett was perhaps not going to work even if he got his confidence back, he worked well as a team of smalls providing pressure but benefitted mainly from getting the second best small defender (yes I know he did perform once when Eddie was out but Yazz as playing forward me thinks) - WE NEED A QUALITY SMALL FORWARD! Best nomination is Yarran, classy but laconic, Buckley is manic enough but does he seek the pill or did he perform well this year when led to the ball, smoky is Tuohy he has a good leg but are the defensive habits to ingrained? I say we trade for a disgruntled small forward - surely GWS or GC have a gun young forward he can't break in, or We can poach someone back from the Crows (we need to even that ledger - read Sauce and Betts) or Milera (Saints) - he showed a bit and at least he took his medicine

Oh yeah - if item 1 or 2 works, and Waite pisses off good luck to him, but if so the resting ruck doesnt need to kick goals (nice to have) and then on that basis we have that covered .... but what they do need to do is provide a target and compete (Kreuzer and Wood) therefore trade Warnock for a sack of Burley footies and a slab of Emu export to whoever will take him and draft a project ruck with pick 123.

Always fun to look back on what you thought the team would look like compared to what it actually does come round 1.
Given fitness, I'd say that at least the bolded would be locks at this stage:

Buckley Jamison Tuohy
Sheehan Rowe Docherty
Simpson Gibbs Yarran
Everitt Henderson Thomas
Menzel
............. Kreuzer

Warnock Judd Murphy

Walker Bell Carrazzo/Curnow ............

Cripps, White, Wood, Graham and Watson sit next in line.
Robinson, Garlett, Casboult and Waite are all in the who knows basket right now.

I'd say that we're likely to see at least 2 new faces come straight into the line-up next year based on needs and then there will always be at least one player that will have a killer pre-season and jump others.

Even if Waite stays, he'll have to put in a better than usual pre-season to take the coaches eyes.

I will be furious at Waite if he leaves. Would be the ultimate shit on the club move after the time we've stuck by him.
Everything points to Waite leaving. If it wasn't for that I'd trade Casboult too, he's stocks are probably as high as they will be, I love the way he goes about it but we cannot rely on a guy that simply cannot kick.
