This is true, but I don't get why we only bring players over for 12 months. I thought he showed something to warrant a second year.
Well we seem to find a good rookie every couple of years so why not expand that pool of talent more often by getting rid of guys who don't show much after a one year contract.

That's fair enough.
But from what I saw of Reynolds this year I thought he showed something.

Happy to back the club in here though.

I'm skeptical of the Reynolds decision being based purely on performance.

However, having said that, I think it's become apparent after previous list decisions (McInnes a perfect example) that certain players have been kept around for too long and been essentially clogging the list.

Still, it seems a little hasty considering he showed some promise in the VFL. Pretty shocked to be honest.

Gotta think that the delistings and retirements that occurred during the season may have spared a couple players their careers as well (looking right at you Lucas). Either that or the club still feels they may have some value as a trade option or that they still have something to offer the club.

Shame about Temay too, but it seems to be that his pick was purely based on that one game he played on Lachie Whitfield. Another mid-round pick that has been completely wasted.

Temmay was a 2nd rounder wasn't he?

Is it just me, or have we gotten way too many of those wrong
Yep, pick 35. Not exactly a late draft gamble pick.

Definitely think that our 2nd-3rd round picks have been woeful. Robinson was looking like a rare bargain for us but even that is debatable now.

I don't really understand our draft strategy sometimes. Instead of taking a raw prospect and taking some risk, they seem to pick players who seem safe picks but are very one-dimensional. There's been too many howlers now to think it's just an issue with development, there's gotta be some serious flaws in the recruitment strategy.

Not surprised to see Temay go, but am surprised that he has gone ahead of others who have been around for longer.

Seems apparent that our draft and trade period is going to be pretty active. Gotta get some small forwards, lock down defenders and ideally a really classy outfield mid ASAP. Reckon our first pick will go towards a silky running midfielder, then I have no idea what they'll do as there seems to be no predictable logic. Even last year all the mail as McCarthy until Cripps popped up in the last 24 hours before the draft. Seems they don't even have a concrete strategy.

Agree, Sydney have that little bloke Cunningham Rookie pick 95 from the same year as Temay, same age, weight, height, and he's just had his breakout year, which is surely testimony to the Swannies development program.......or an indictment on ours.

If we had the luxury of playing him there I think he'd be awesome at it. Reads the play so well
With his reading of the play I think Henderson could be our Josh Gibson and the glue of our defensive unit. Rowe takes the gorillas, Jamo sticks closer to goal and Henderson floats around where needed. On the rare occasions Jamo is getting badly beaten then Hendo can swap with him. The basis of all good teams is a cohesive defensive unit and is more important than a lead up forward.

I'll update this periodically as I did last year...

You can have 38 to 40 senior players depending on whether you 4 or 6 rookies on your list. I personally expect we'll have 6 rookies.

Live Draft picks: (bare minimum no. selections)
- 6
- 26
- 43
- 61
- 79
- 97

Player #s currently available:
18, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 29, 31, 34, 37 and anything after 48

Chopping Block:
Lucas, Robinson, Waite, Garlett, Casboult

Currently 34 senior players on the senior list with the departures/additions of:
- Duigan
- Scotland
- Bootsma
- Temay
- McInnes
- Cachia (r)
- Reynolds (r)
+ Fraser Russell (r)

Senior players to be added:
*Pending

Worth noting we went in to the 2013 national draft with 33 senior players, so the delisting could be done for now.

It's a multi-pronged thing. Recruitment + Development + Culture. Without one of the things, the pyramid of goodness fails. We've been lacking in all three departments for quite some time. Geelong, Sydney and the Hawks have all three in spades.

Definitely a bit of both I think. Swans development and recruitment strategy has been top level for over 10 years now, whilst ours has been going backwards. Whether people agree or not, I think they also have inherent advantages in terms of their scholarship systems and so on, but it doesn't account for the Swans list being as deep and dangerous as it gets. Their recycling of older players picked up for next to nothing also exemplify the quality of their recruiting / development system.

Also wonder if Triggs appointment has sped up the process in terms of our list development. He's stated recently that it's probably the most pressing issue at the club and now we're suddenly delisting 1st and 2nd year players when in the past most of them have been given 3-4 years. Not against the changes either, been saying for two years that the list needs huge turnover to be truly competitive. 7 changes this year already is probably still not enough but there's gotta be balance in terms of age and experience at the same time.

Fairly sure Cunningham is another product of the NSW academies.

Didn't Mckay rate him because he had coached him at high school or something and wasn't he meant to be an elite runner
It wasn't McKay, it was Rogers et al. in the recruiting department. They took his fitness pedigree (national level middle distance runner) and one really good game against Whitfield (as a defensive tagger, most u/18's struggle with a tag) and extrapolated that into him becoming a quality player. I remember being surprised at the pick at the time as there was still some good talent available that had a better sample size, better disposal and more strings in their bow. He was an athletic small defender who wasn't worth a 2nd round pick, could have picked up a similar type later on or even in the rookie draft.

I think you'll find Armfield and Ellard are also being prepared for sale. Watson and Warnock will be offered up for the right price.
Armfield, Watson and Warnock all have contracts while Ellard could be trade biat. I decided to not add trade bait in the list. Casboult and Waite in there though because of their reluctance to sign as opposed to the club's.

Armfield & Ellard have zero trade value. They're also contracted.

Watson & Warnock may attract something but I doubt either will go. Warnock could end up at a lower placed club and maybe Watson too, but am doubtful.
