We don't often give the rookie listed players a lot of consideration but you wonder which way we may go at years end.
We seem to like the 38/6 split and that will likely remain this year. Category B rookie in Byrne, sits outside this split.

Given that we'll likely dip in for another 3 rookies, which way do we go?
Scotland has retired leaving us one rookie spot open.
Johnson, Sheehan and Wood won't be moved on, leaving on Cachia and Reynolds, yet neither of these 2 players warrant quitting.

Do we see enough in any of these rookies to upgrade to the senior list at years end? It looks likely.

Any merit in us grabbing a tall through the rookie draft?

We may as well take the punt....

I'd do it. Jack Frost looks like a good find. Levi is going well. Joel Tippett was looking good until injured. A mature age tall would be good cover for us given our lack of depth.

Rowe is looking like a good mature pick up now as well. For list balancing purposes i'd be for all for a mature age KPP since we can't expect any young KPP's we draft to play for quite awhile.

Getting the right tall? Absolutely.

Who knows what we may be trading in though?
If we do nab the KPF we've desperately been wanting and a key back, we may just be covered for at least another year while Giles comes on.

I'm overly keen on Tomlinson.

Play him at CHF while Cas clunks them at FF. Hendo could play forward or down back as required.

As a regular NB watcher/reporter, you should have a better idea than most.

We have been creative of late with the rookie list, read Scotto. Not beyond the realms of possibility that a required player in twilight (Waite), or a valued clubman/fringe player like Ellard may follow the model. Similarly if the jury is out on Temay, we could do similar to Whitey and O'Keefe in recent years.

On face value, assuming natural progression and heeding reports, I feel that Johnson and Sheehan would be the most likely. Given restrictions on Irish rookie signings, what are the chances of Byrne warranting a spot if another youngster is on offer from our "zone"? How much is he invested, or is he on a working holiday? How close is he given season only half way?

Would be mad to dump Wood given his NB impact and readiness to step in to the breach. His ultimate classification depends so much on the rehab of Kreuzer. If MK doesn't "come up" and feel confident in his body we could face a shock retirement given the mid season spiel on his after life. If this was the case Wood auto elevation. His best at pies was adequate, reports are good, and theoretically approaching rucking prime rather than past his best.

Cachia such a hard case, decision to be made, but remains on fringes unable to advance his case at present. Current odds not in his favour. Loved Reynolds profile and highlights, reports suggest some stagnation during year, but not unreasonable to expect plenty of upside.

Probably can't expect more than 3 or 4 draftees on "form". Free agents, trades and DFA's will probably dictate the number of movements. Personally I struggle to see anything like a double figure list change.

It is totally intriguing. Particularly if you share my view that we have very little "dead wood". Short of talls and top end mids in the right age bracket. I struggle to find a player not deserving of his spot given mid season departures.

I still think that Cameron Conlon would have been a handy pick up last year as a rookie, local boy, fills a need and has the potential to be an awesome forward (injuries aside).

Looks like he will get his chance through the ND this year, there's been some talk that Port are the most keen having requested medical information etc.

Looked the part potentially. What has he done this year though?

Rumoured that we are into Membrey and Hallahan from recent reports.

Both uncontracted as well. I like the idea of getting another marking target up forward but I have little to judge them both on exposed form.

Now that Hallahan is on the fringe again at Hawthorn despite their raft of injuries, we might be able to get him cheaper than I thought when he looked like he had cemented a spot in the team.

Would love a return of Membrey and Hallahan from the Trade Period.

Can then bank our first round pick on a KPP.

I have little idea as the spread of quality is pretty good.

The Irish boys are going nowhere as they're on 2 year contracts and with Johnson and Wood being safe, it really leaves us Cachia and Reynolds yet both here may be better than what we may get should we quit them.

Last year was pretty easy but this year is much harder to predict as there isn't a player on the rookie list that doesn't show something or have a reason for being there.

Reynolds may be the first player to be moved on if need be but that won't be an easy decision.
Cachia would make for an even harder decision as his output is terrific yet he may just always be a player that sits somewhere in the 25-30 range of quality on the list.

Who knows who we may lose on the senior list though and a couple of promotions may not be totally out of the question.

If we finish down the bottom end could a top 3 pick + steak knives nab Tomlinson and Shiel?

With remarks like that you may have some of us hoping to lose a few more games BM123 :)

If something like that did come about, a couple of favoured trades and a good selection or two via drafts and your list looks completely different.
That's why when people talk about what a teams list will look like in 5 years time is just folly these days.

Not sure if this is the thread for it but does any one know the contract status of Zaharakis ? have always had a soft spot for him and with everything going on at Essendon* he may want out.
He'll be their next captain...

I'm concerned that our stoush with the hypocrites from Hawthorn over the Wright issue, may sour their ability to trade Hallahan to us (even if he declared he wanted to come to us)

If we do manage to get Hallahan and add him to a midfield of Graham, Cripps, Curnow ... that is some serious grunt... albeit pretty slow.

Not sure we'd be after Hallahan.

I guess one can put up an argument for half of the players playing AFL but a Hallahan seems like the least likely type we'd need.

Grunt is fine as long as you have proper runners on the outside.

Hawthorn couldn't do crap since we finished below them. If he wants us then we either give them chips or he leaves for free.
