The Cooney who had 6 kicked on him in a GF. Still have not forgiven him for that and Eddie being drafted as the result of it.

My only issue with him would be stopping the growth of some of the kids for a couple of years. Garner, Dumont, Turner, this years pick ect. Yes we had some duds play this year but we also had Wells + Macmillan miss most of the year, Swallow miss half the year, Ziebell miss time. This will not happen every year. Kids have to awn their spot but we know name player/regulars will not be dropped and Cooney will be one. We are seeing alot of kids asking the be traded after 2 years if they aren't getting games and now senior players are asking to be moved while contracted and going to states that they have never lied in. And we will have 30+ players who would get games in most sides.

If Cooney gets us a flag I'm all for it. Would be a great super sub especially in a final. He can't play like he once did for 4 quarters for a full year anymore. Maybe play him 3 weeks as a sub and then a full game. Give him a week off when he needs it. Maybe with would prolong his career. Would be a damaging sub when the opposition is tired. Can win his own ball, can spread, can finish and is still quick. Subs should be hard at the ball/man, be able to win their own ball, quick and be able to finish on the outside. He could win as a final if fit and firing in September so we should be looking at him.

Adams and 36 + 56 for Cooney and 26?
Adams will struggle to get a game with year and Cooney could take his role as sub. Adams may not be in our best 30 players at some stage in the next 2 years if he is not already after this off season.

God I hate that argument. This is only an issue if the coaching staff play him on reputation, not on form. In which case this would be a coaching issue, not a recruitment one.

If Cooney (or whichever other prospective player) are better than the players departing and are not breaking the bank, then you do it. Simple.

what we give up isn't the issue for Cooney. He is worth a third or fourth rounder every day of the week. However, he is reported to be on 500k at the dogs. I certainly am against paying him anything near that. Not worth a gamble at anything more than 350k imo.

How about this for a rumoured four club deal:

North gain pick 21, lose Greenwood
Lions gain Beams, lose pick 21
Cats gain Mitch Clark
Pies gain Greenwood, lose Beams
Pies already rejected pick 5 and 25 for Beams, with 25 going to us for Greenwood. So if they are going to reject pick 5 and greenwood for beams, why would they take what you are suggesting, which is only greenwood for beams.

And what are melbourne getting for mitch clark in this 4 way deal? im totally baffled by your rumour.

Haven't been following closely last 24 hours, but where has this Cooney for 56 talk come from?

I know it's been reported but why would the dogs accept the deal? And more importantly why aren't other clubs bidding on him too at that price?

Has he nominated us?

My problem is that Cooney/Varcoe takes up a spot on the list which could be used for a new young player. I would rather we added new blood instead of yesterdays men.
Memories of the Shane Harvey, Hay trades are still very fresh. History being repeated>

We should get Cooney if that cheap. Solid this year but scintillating the year before. Always risk, but cooney is a fantastic, skillful, damaging, goal kicking player when firing.

It will be easier for guys like Cooney and Higgins with a deep midfield, and how would you stop a midfield with boomer, Cunnington, Swallow, Ziebell, Dal Santo, Cooney, Higgins, Goldstein kicking to a forward line with petrie, waite, brown, black and Thomas. That is a lot of proven quality even if there is some inconsistency in there. Coaches job to fix that.

Someone will cut you up every week if we can get them all fit.

To think the only price we pay from a list perspective is cutting guys like Anthony, Wilikins, Nahas - it is a ridiculous opportunity and so what if they break down. Levi could be considered a cost, but doubt they are related - he wants more money than we want to pay regardless of who we are getting in. The fact we are now considering Cooney shows that.

Get it done.

For mine, he's coming to North to play finals & try to win a flag. He takes around 250-300K in the knowledge that we'd look after him in terms of games / minutes played to try & elongate his career & be the best he can be (which is still pretty good) when we need him the most. In other words he's coming to perform a role.
- His body needs to be OK (assume he passes the medical on his knee & anything else we don't know about)
- He's prepared to sacrifice his own ambitions to serve the purposes of the club

Otherwise he's not worth bringing in & let's look elsewhere in the market or go to the draft.

Pick 56 for Cooney is like going int Bunnings for a light bulb and coming out with a leaf blower. Not sure if you need it but can't resist at the price.
This should be the standard response to anybody asking why we're into him.

I liked the European football analogy, you need a deep squad to win things. Waite, Higgins, Cooney and even Varcoe won't play full seasons, and when they don't play, Brown, Wood, Dumont, Garner, Sugar, etc. get games.

Problem with kids is sure you can give them games, but no comp for spots and they play lazy and stagnate. Hence the problem of your Melbourne and Richmond's, play on potential alone you get entitled 20 y.o's who think kick chasing is acceptable.

Varcoe is that WTF did I buy this for but you leave it in the garage for 3 years collecting dust before you can summon up the effort to take it to the salvos or the tip.

What were the reaction when the Hawks picked up Stuart Dew and then a little later Brian Lake, if it was North this board would of went nuts. But those run down players produced the goods in the big games.

Adam Cooney could be that player for us, he could provide those important burst in big matches that get us over the line. If he is cheap them get him

I dont think they should be worried, as you say if their form warrants it they get a game. Otherwise we have 2 years tops depending on form (thinking Petrie and Boomer who could be only 1) where we'll see a lot of the older players retire. These kids will be the nucleus of the team then and still only 20-23.
