Perspective.

Cooney recently turned 29 and has played 40 of the last 49 games and averaged over 20 possessions and a little under a goal a game.

That would be more than Ziebell, Greenwood up there with Wells and Swallow and certainly more than Harper, McKenzie, Jacobs.

Last year North needed class, experience and some outside players.

Whilst Dal Santo, Higgins and Cooney (who has a little of his burst speed) are certainly not line breaking, it is class and time and decision making and experience and hitting targets and building those chains of possession.

It is also probably good for all parties including Harper. I would also be playing a Mullett, Bastinac, Turner, Nahas and even Adams over Harper forward of centre.

Harper is the trade that has the potential to most embarrass us I reckon. If the kid gets his body (and head) right he can still be a gun.
He struggles with the most important part of footy - getting the ball. Even in his supposed break out season in 2012, he would routinely go 30-40 minutes without getting near it in matches.

There are blokes playing suburban footy with his pace and skills, but they are at that level for a variety of reasons (attitude, commitment, preferring to work full time and play footy etc). It takes more than just raw talent to make the grade.

It's an awful waste given he has the build, tank, speed and skills to be a superb modern footballer, but I'll back the club in on this one. Writing has been on the wall for a long time.

Taking into account everything Pykie and others have said, and trusting the way the club has been run for several years now, I still think this Cooney thing is starting to smell like poo. Maybe it's blind faith, but I really thought Harps could come good. I've always imagined my kids wanting a no. 23 on their backs :(

This might sound silly but harper is a better afl footballer than a vfl footballer. There's a lot of blokes that can't get a kick at afl level but dominate sanfl/vfl and there's some blokes that can't get a kick at sanfl/vfl level but perform at afl level

Harper + #36 for Cooney and #46[/QUOTE]

Screw it, I'm all for it. If that's what it takes (losing Harper for Cooney), then I'm all for it.

Massive waste with Harper, but I can see Cooney doing very well for us.

Bloody hell, who would have thought Higgins and Cooney would be wearing our colours next season?

Might be good for Kieran's own career. Clearly not going to make it here - he struggles to get 10 touches in the VFL ffs
Unfortunately, this is the conclusion I have come to as well. If he's been seeing a psychologist because he's been struggling, then a fresh break seems the best thing for him.

One of those frustrating things - would love to keep him, but he will probably never reach his best with us. He may have a chance of doing so at another club (although WB wouldn't be anywhere near first choice for this).

what are the confirmed details of the trade? I'm yet to see anything online anywhere.
According to Sam Landsberger the only confirmation is Cooney heading to North and the exchange remains a discussion between the two clubs but shouldn't be an issue.

Ermmm wasn't Pykie the one telling us 3 years ago what a steal Harper was?
I was, as I said, he had injuries at the time, most (North's recruiters included) probably thought with full time coaching etc he would of continually progressed.

His first two seasons certainly indicated that, everyone gets a few wrong.

Getting an upgrade of 10 spots for a bloke who wouldn't even be on our list in 12 months would be a fantastic result. Adding the potential upside of 12-24 months of Cooney is a bonus.
Yep true, just a bit of a shock losing Harps. Cooney will contribute now while we make a big push, im all for getting him.

But i wouldnt have minded to see Harps still on our list the following year if he showed improvement (not necessarily making a starting 22 spot his own). We'll have plenty of oldies we'll wheel out soon, Harps is what 22? He'd only be 24 by the time plenty of opportunity would present itself. However there is/ was the risk he'd stink it up and be axed, guess they figure its better to act while theres still trade value.

Cooney will be a bonus but only for picks, not players. Surely Harper deserves 1 more year to prove his worth.
Sure at WB where he might actually get a game and play in their forward line as a Gia replacement.

Harper has a career high of 16 disposals after 4 seasons.

Hale became Harper who became Cooney. Possible win for all 3.

The club was gonna pick Harper with their first pick if Atley wasn't available :/
Just shows at best a mid 20s pick you'd get a Greenwood 33-50% of the time at best - 25 is way unders for him. Hopefully 36 isnt involved i want Pies to upgrade that to 30, unless the Dogs are upgrading it to 25/27.

Yep I remember that was the word.
Drafting him was described as boom or bust. Its a bust for us which sucks but maybe trading him will be a boom with the draft pick we bring in.

The deal will be good, we have a guy who has struggled to play for 2 years and when he has played he does nothing, bring in a proven ball winner with class in the meantime upgrading our picks. We finished in a prelim final, got Waite, Higgins, Cooney and recruit 3 players inside the top 30.... Not bad at all.
