Here's a few news articles to cover where we are at the moment:

Brisbane Lions deny shopping Daniel Merrett around to AFL clubs for trade

Brisbane football manager Dean Warren has denied a report claiming that the Lions have been shopping Daniel Merrett around to other AFL clubs.

Warren said a newspaper article on Wednesday that said Merrett had been offered up for trade was "not factual".

Brisbane Lions hope for Paddy Ryder decision by the end of the week

The Brisbane Lions expect Paddy Ryder to make a decision by the end of the week on whether he will join the club.

Ryder has quit Essendon and will visit Port Adelaide this week before deciding where he will play next season.

Lions chief executive Greg Swann said on Monday he hoped for clarity within days.

Beams requests trade to home state Queensland

COLLINGWOOD midfielder Dayne Beams has dropped a bombshell by requesting a trade to Queensland.

However, the Magpies are determined to retain him.

The club released a statement saying that the 24-year-old wanted to return to Queensland - where he grew up - for "family reasons".

Collingwood will try to retain AFL star Dayne Beams

Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert says the Magpies will do everything possible to convince Dayne Beams to stay after the star midfielder requested a transfer to one of the Queensland AFL clubs for personal reasons.

Beams, who won Collingwood's best and fairest award in 2012, has one more year to run on his current contract with the Magpies.

But he has told the club he wants to return to his home state to be closer to his ill father.

From The Age
Port's willingness to part with pick No.16 and a player clearly places it in a stronger position to satisfy Essendon than the Lions, who are unwilling to part with pick No.4 – which they would give up for Collingwood's Dayne Beams, who has requested a trade to the Lions and is likely to be offered a heavily frontloaded, five-year contract, in which he would average close to $750,000 per annum but exceed a million dollars a season in the first two years – a period when the Lions should have significant salary cap room.

The Gold Coast Suns will also investigate whether Beams is potentially available to them, though they have not been on Beams' radar and were surprised to hear he wanted to leave Collingwood. Beams has told the Pies he wants to play with his brother Claye at Brisbane.

Brisbane prepared for drawn-out negotiations to secure Dayne Beams from Collingwood
BRISBANE will offer Collingwood star Dayne Beams a $3.5 million five-year contract to join the Lions.

The Lions will table the prized pick No. 4 at this year’s national draft and a player to the Magpies to make the trade happen.

But The Courier-Mail understands Brisbane’s top talent and emerging youngsters would not be used as trade bait and the club is prepared for drawn-out negotiations to get Beams to the Gabba.

Essendon ruckman Paddy Ryder has chosen Port Adelaide as his new home after a meticulously planned and detailed three-day presentation from the club, involving chairman David Koch and led by coach Ken Hinkley, who looks to have successfully demonstrated to Ryder his pivotal role in the Power's vision for 2015 and beyond.

Nathan Buckley says Collingwood want a ready-made star in return for midfielder Dayne Beams

NATHAN Buckley toyed with the idea of recruiting Claye Beams to Collingwood in a bid to thwart brother Dayne’s homesickness and keep the electrifying ball user at the Magpies.

And Buckley said should the Magpies agree to trade Beams to Brisbane Lions he wants a ready-made player in return — and one of similar star-power status.
The Magpies coach said Beams was on track to become one of the AFL’s top-three midfielders.

The Lions have tabled a $4 million, five-year offer to the contracted midfielder, where he would join Claye, after Beams last week rocked the Pies by declaring he wanted out.

Gold Coast is not planning to pitch for Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams

The Suns do not have the salary cap room to accommodate Beams, who seems destined to become a Brisbane player next season despite having 12 months to run on his contract.

The Lions have money to spend, and would be able to work their first choice in the national draft, No.4, into a deal for the 24-year-old midfielder, whose father is seriously ill.

Collingwood wants Beams to see out his contract, but the club is likely to also demand a ready-to-go replacement, from the Lions or another club, should it let him leave.

Dayne Beams will rebuff Collingwood attempts to retain him, demanding trade to Brisbane Lions

DAYNE Beams will rebuff all Collingwood attempts to retain him in 2015, adamant he will be traded to Brisbane by the end of trade week.

The Pies have talked of a cooling-off period for Beams to consider his future again after meeting Eddie McGuire and Nathan Buckley last Wednesday.

But Beams is not interested in a contract which allows him more time to visit his sick father next year while staying at Collingwood.

After brooding on his father’s situation for months, he is adamant his decision is final and will not be reversed.

Story coming out of the above interview:

Beams may have to wait to move

"There's no way in the world we're going to actually trade our young talent ... that's starting to mature and get us to where we need to be," Warren told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

"We think pick four is very fair, but we do understand that Dayne is contracted.

"If we have to wait, we might have to wait until he's out of contract the following year."

Merrett 'looking at options' for leaving the Lions

"A lot of interest came for Daniel and I think that sparked him a little bit," Schwab told SEN radio on Tuesday.

"He has been a great player for Brisbane and by his own admission he has been a little bit flat in his football the last 12 months.

"I know he is exploring some options so we'll just wait and see what Daniel comes up with, if he wants to be traded or not, and then we'll consider it depending on what offers we get."

"He's contracted for another couple of years (and) as far as I'm concerned, Daniel's a required player," football manager Dean Warren told AFL.com.au.

Trade winds: Tuesday

The Age reports that the Brisbane Lions could be keen on Robinson, who has also attracted a level of interest from some other clubs.

Brisbane Lions defender Joel Patfull is reportedly keen to move to the Sydney Swans a year before he comes out of contract.

The Herald Sun reported on Tuesday that Patfull, who is contracted until the end of next season, was seeking a trade to this year's runner-up.

Lions talent acquisition and retention manager Peter Schwab said the club remained hopeful the valuable defender would play out his career in Brisbane before relocating to the harbour city.

"I think Joel has ideas of moving to Sydney after his playing career, and that's known by us," Schwab told SEN.

"But right at the moment … Joel's a two-time club champion and finished third this year, so we'd hope he'd move to Sydney after his footy career.

"He is contracted, so at the moment that's the status of Joel."

Brisbane Lions defender Joel Patfull far from landing at Sydney Swans

Joel Patfull's manager Shane Casley has poured cold water on the prospect of the Brisbane key defender heading to Sydney next year.

"That's speculation at this stage, Joel is contracted to the Brisbane Lions for next year and we've certainly spoken to them about extending his contract," Casley said.

"He's certainly indicated to me and the club that at the end of his footy career he'd like to live in Sydney.

"If there was an opportunity to get to a Sydney club next year we'd look at it but again it would have to be with the total consent of the Brisbane Lions.

"At the end of the day, Brisbane control that process because he's contracted."

Merrett set to remain at Lions

BRISBANE chief executive Greg Swann says veteran defender Daniel Merrett is not about to leave the club any time soon. Lions list manager Peter Schwab told Melbourne radio on Monday that Merrett was “exploring some options’’, but had not told the club what he wanted to do. Swann said the 29-year-old was set to stay at the Gabba as no clubs had approached Brisbane about a possible trade. “Nobody has spoken to us about him,’’ Swann said. “He’s got two years to run on his contract. He’s staying as far as we are concerned.’’

The manager of Lions defender Joel Patfull confirmed that the two-time club champion was looking at a possible move to Sydney, where Patfull plans to live after he retires. “Brisbane control that process because he’s contracted but if there’s an opportunity of getting to a Sydney club, we would look at it,’’ Shane Casley said on Melbourne radio.

Brisbane corral young talent as Magpies demand high price for Beams
Greg Denham

BRISBANE have declared their young talent off limits as Collingwood have started their compensation demands for potentially losing contracted midfielder Dayne Beams to the Lions.

The Lions have told the Magpies there will not be any deals done involving young Brisbane players James Aish or Sam Mayes.

Collingwood have requested either of the two as well as Brisbane’s first national draft selection in return for releasing Beams a year before his contract expires.

Brisbane, who are certain to shed contracted defender Daniel Merrett, yesterday told Collingwood that Aish and Mayes were both off limits. “We are not giving up on our kids,” a senior Brisbane official told The Australian. “There has been no consideration given to anything but our first pick.”

Demons target defenders Merrett and Frost

BRISBANE Lion Daniel Merrett and Greater Western Sydney's Sam Frost are right in Melbourne's sights as the Demons look to cover the expected loss of free agent James Frawley.

Although Frawley is yet to make a call on his future, it is widely believed he will exercise his free agency rights and head to either Geelong or Hawthorn.

To cover the resulting hole in its defence, Melbourne has begun talks with Merrett and Frost and are confident of getting both.

Dayne Beams wants to move to Queensland but Collingwood won’t let him go without a fight

COLLINGWOOD has issued Brisbane with a trade deadline of 5pm next Friday in order to facilitate Dayne Beams’ desire to move to the Lions next year.

While the Magpies are understanding of Beams’ personal circumstances - and his desire to be closer to his ill father - the club has instructed Brisbane that any potential trade must achieve a fair outcome for Collingwood, and be finalised within the next week.

An impasse exists between the two clubs at the moment, with Brisbane offering its pick No.4 (which will likely become pick No.5 after free agency compensation), but with Collingwood insisting that any trade must include that draft selection as well as one of Brisbane’s best players.

Magpie chief executive Gary Pert phoned his Lions counterpart Greg Swann to reinforce the club’s standpoint.

Daniel Merrett a wanted man with three clubs reportedly chasing the Brisbane Lions defender

THREE clubs have contacted Brisbane about trading for veteran defender Daniel Merrett.

The Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Adelaide have signalled their interest in Merrett who is exploring his options despite having two years to run on his contract at the Gabba.

Gold Coast could also join the queue for Merrett.

No clubs had approached Brisbane about Merrett earlier in the week but speculation that he was looking for a change sparked a late rush of inquiries.

The Brisbane Lions are not expected to match any second- or third-round bids for academy players Liam Dawson or Harris Andrews, with the Lions planning to keep those picks available in case they are required as part of the Beams trade. Both players have impressed other clubs, with Dawson a possible second-round pick. The Lions are likely to trade defender Joel Patfull to the Giants.

Collingwood has told the Lions it wants to sort out a trade for Beams by the end of this week, and that it wants the club's No. 4 pick and a good young player for the contracted onballer.

Meanwhile, Brisbane and Collingwood made no progress in trade talks regarding Dayne Beams who did not attend the Magpies’ best-and-fairest presentation last weekend. The Lions are prepared to offer extra picks in addition to no. 4 but no players. The Magpies have asked for Peace Hanley, Dayne Zorko, James Aish or Sam Mayes in addition to pick No.4. “We had some discussions but we didn’t get too far,’’ Lions CEO Greg Swann said. “We are happy to look at extra picks but we are not in the position to put our good players on the table.’’ Melbourne has dropped out of the running for Lions veteran Daniel Merrett while the Suns have indicated some interest in the defender.

Bains also ruled out any interest in veteran Brisbane defender Daniel Merrett — “he’s not in our demographic and age group’’ – and said the Saints were not interested in trading 26-year-old midfielder David Armitage, who has two years to run on his contract and was “the perfect player to take our midfield group forward’’.

Paddy Ryder stalemate: It's 'apples for apples, not apples for a bag of peanuts

In a similar vein, Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine indicated that the Magpies had not made any ground with the Brisbane Lions on a trade for the contracted Beams, although the Brisbane Lions remained confident that a deal would be done for the 24-year-old - who wants to return to his home state of Queensland to be near his ill father.

Lions recruiting chief Peter Schwab indicated that the Magpies had accepted that the Lions would not be relinquishing a player, as per the initial request of Collingwood.

"It'll come down to a pick or a combination of picks maybe shuffling around."
