Trade wrap: Dees ponder deal with Pies, Giants keen on Patfull

Greater Western Sydney is favoured to secure Brisbane Lions defender Joel Patfull after he indicated last week he was keen to continue his career in Sydney.

The dual best and fairest at the Lions could command a second-round selection, with the two clubs potentially swapping selections down the order sweeten the deal.

Collingwood targets Jack Redden and James Aish to help facilitate trade with Brisbane for Dayne Beams (JAY CLARK WARNING!)

COLLINGWOOD will target Brisbane midfield pair Jack Redden and James Aish to help break the deadlock on the Dayne Beams deal.
The Pies remain adamant they will only release Beams if the Lions hand over a quality senior player in addition to their No. 4 draft choice.
The Pies have asked the Lions to include either on-ball tough nut Redden, 23, slick wingman Aish, 19, versatile midfielder Sam Mayes, 20, backman Pearce Hanley, 25, or goalkicking midfielder Dayne Zorko, 25 in the Beams exchange.

While slick South Australian wingmen Aish and Sam Mayes top the Pies’ wishlist and would deliver the midfield a huge boost, Redden has emerged as a more realistic target.

North sweats on Greenwood

The Brisbane Lions and Collingwood were meeting Monday night to try to hammer out a deal on Dayne Beams who wants to leave the Magpies and join Brisbane on a five year deal for about $4million.

Collingwood has insisted they want a seasoned player in any exchange, while the Lions have been steadfast in refusing to trade their young talent for the contracted Magpies midfielder. The possibility of securing Greenwood might alter Collingwood's view on an exchange of draft picks alone. Brisbane's picks 5 and 23 might potentially be able to secure a deal if 23 were able to be on-passed to North Melbourne for Greenwood.

It seems Robinson's best hope of finding a new home will come if, as expected, Carlton delists him at the end of the trade period. If that happens, he can move to the club of his choice as a free agent, with the Brisbane Lions a possible destination.

Daniel Merrett's future at the Lions also remains unclear. The Bulldogs and, to a lesser extent, Gold Coast have expressed interest in the key defender. If a suitable trade cannot be arranged, Merrett, who has two years remaining on his existing contract, is open to remaining at the Gabba. It is believed Merrett, 29, would prefer to explore opportunities with clubs likely to be in premiership contention before he retires.

There has been little opposition interest in run-with midfielder Andrew Raines, who amicably parted ways with the Lions at the end of the season.

Joel Patfull’s had gutful at the Lions, wants trade to Giants (GREG DENHAM ALERT!)

Gold Coast will not pursue Merrett after securing Sydney’s running defender Nick Malceski this week as an unrestricted free agent on a three-year deal.

Brisbane list manager Peter Schwab said yesterday initial interest in Merrett from Melbourne had “fallen off”, with the Western Bulldogs showing “a little bit of interest”.

Schwab said Patfull was likely to head to GWS after expressing a desire to live in Sydney.

“Provided the Giants come to the party and swap a pick in the early 20s, then I think that deal could be done,” Schwab said. “But that pick may not necessarily be used to get Dayne Beams from Collingwood.”

“We’ve got a first-round pick (currently No 5) and a second-round selection (24) which we intend to be part of the trade,” Schwab said.

Brisbane said contracted ruckman Matthew Leuenberger would not be considered for trade, particularly after the Lions missed out on Essendon ruckman Paddy Ryder.

Brisbane puts picks 5 and 25 on the table for Collingwood's Dayne Beams

"We understand that we've got to offer a little bit more from a picks point of view, but ... we think it's way over anyway, the quality of the players Collingwood have asked for as well as pick five." Swann said.

"But we've looked at maybe offering our second-round pick and doing some things with that. There'll be some swaps of picks later on as well.

"25 might go somewhere else to try to get another player, but at the moment we're trying to deal directly with Collingwood."

The player's manager contacted the Lions on Wednesday morning to seek a trade, with Christensen – who was born in Geelong – said to want a lifestyle change.

"I don't even know if Geelong know this is happening, or what their thoughts are," Swann said. "And the Gold Coast would probably be interested if he wanted to go to Queensland.

"He's a seriously good player, and we'd love to have him if everything works out."

Lots of good info in this article.

Allen Christensen bid sparks Lions-Cats talks
Emma Quayle

Geelong and the Brisbane Lions have begun discussing a potential trade for Allen Christensen, after the midfielder's surprise decision to request a trade away from the Cats.

The Lions are interested in Christensen and have room in their salary cap to sign him, but would need to fully investigate his back problems and the off-field support he would need before pushing ahead with a trade deal.

Christensen, who is out of contract, has played 65 games in four years for the Cats since he was drafted from the Geelong Falcons after growing up in Lara.

The Lions are hoping to get a pick in the early 20s for defender Joel Patfull from the Giants, which they would then try to use for Christensen. The Cats have not given up hope of turning him around and had no inclination he was about to ask for a trade.

Pretty key point there, that he's out of contract. Strengthens our position greatly.

Trade wrap: Beams deal hits snag, Giants to get busy and Dons, Power get creative

The Lions remain hopeful, however, that they will reach a trade with Greater Western Sydney for two-time best and fairest winner Joel Patfull.

The Giants are in the midst of a busy trade period, trying to negotiate deals for Kristian Jaksch, Jono O'Rourke, Sam Frost and Jonathan Giles, but the Lions believe a deal can be reached on Patfull before the close of the trade period next Thursday.

Lions defender Joel Patfull on the brink of GWS switch

BRISBANE Lions defender Joel Patfull is on the brink of joining Greater Western Sydney.

The clubs have an in-principle agreement that would see the two-time best and fairest winner head to the Giants in exchange for pick 21.

No paperwork has been lodged at this stage, but is expected to in the near future.

Geelong was not optimistic about Allen Christensen changing his mind and staying, given the club's efforts to persuade him over several months, with a trade to Brisbane for a pick in the early 20s most likely. The Lions have sent defender Joel Patfull to GWS for pick 21.

Christensen, who is uncontracted but had agreed to terms on a new deal before his shock decision to quit the club for personal reasons, has spoken with Lions coach Justin Leppitsch.

Thursday's trade wrap

With the Lions set to gain pick No.21 from GWS in the soon-to-be-confirmed Patfull trade, it is understood Collingwood indicated it might be prepared to trade Beams if the Lions added that pick to its earlier offer of picks No.5 and 25.

The Lions quickly ruled that out, mindful that doing so would severely weaken their hand as they attempt to broker a trade for Christensen.

The Beams trade remains Brisbane's top priority and, pending the outcome of those talks, the Lions would be prepared to part with either pick No.21 or 25 for Christensen. It is unclear whether either pick would satisfy the Cats.

“Allen has told his manager that Brisbane is his club of choice,’’ Lions CEO Greg Swann said.

The Suns will meet Christensen today but they will not part with pick No. 15 for the 2011 premiership player. Their next pick is No. 29.

The Gold Coast also have less room in their salary cap compared with Brisbane to accommodate his estimated $400,000 pay packet.

Swann said the negotiations with Geelong yesterday were positive and Brisbane were confident they could do a deal with the Cats.

Dayne Beams also came agonisingly close to sealing a trade to become a Brisbane Lions player in a complicated five-club deal that would have led to Heritier Lumumba becoming a Demon, Mitch Clark moving to the Cats, Christensen going to the Lions, and Travis Varcoe and Levi Greenwood shifting to the Magpies. Under that deal, which involved Collingwood shifting from its position of insisting on a player in any trade for Beams, the Magpies accepted a proposal in which they received picks five, 21 and 25 from Brisbane for Beams and their picks 30 and 48.

The Lions had received pick 21 from GWS for Joel Patfull and so it was this pick that would be passed on to the Magpies. Collingwood would have given pick 25 to North for Greenwood.

The Cats were to receive 30 and 48 from Brisbane for Christensen, but this was considered inadequate and Brisbane was unable to find another pick in the 20s to get a deal for him done.

Now the Lions are on the cusp of doing pick 21 to the Cats for Christensen, which would mean the ambitious, five-club deal failed.

Cats prepared to accept pick 21 for Christensen

GEELONG is prepared to accept the Brisbane Lions' pick No.21 in exchange for midfielder Allen Christensen, according to Cats football manager Neil Balme.

Christensen, who managed just eight AFL games this season following back surgery, has expressed his desire to be traded to a Queensland club.

Beams’s manager Paul Connors remains confident the Pies and Lions will come to an agreement, allowing the Pies’ 2012 best and fairest winner to be closer to his ill father.

Collingwood was also chasing Cat Travis Varcoe in a three-way deal involving Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne but that is also off due to the Beams deadlock.

It is understood the Pies will only be able to accommodate Varcoe in the club’s salary cap if Beams departs.

AFL trade news: New name emerges in Dayne Beams deal as trades heat up

Young Brisbane midfielder Jack Crisp could be a surprise component in a complicated five-club deal which would help Dayne Beams become a Lion.

Crisp, who has played 18 matches in three seasons with the Lions, including the final six this year, is out of contract. He has told the Lions he would be happy to return home to Victoria should a deal be struck, otherwise he will accept a two-year offer that is on the table from the Lions.

Crisp was not a topic of discussion during the meeting of all clubs on the opening day of trade week but is understood to have since attracted some interest from Essendon.

Magpie Dayne Beams will become a Brisbane Lions player by the end of the week with the complicated five-club deal the most likely to land the player in Queensland.

The emergence of fringe Lions player Jack Crisp as an extra sweetener to a deal involving draft picks 5 and 25 to Collingwood shaped as the final element to close that deal.

Christensen also OTL:

Meanwhile the Lions will today unveil Allen Christensen as their new signing after the Cats' midfielder passed a medical examination on Sunday. The Cats will receive pick 21 for him in return.

Cats star joins the Lions’ midfield

Geelong has agreed to swap Christensen for overall selection No 21, which was handed to Brisbane by the Giants in return for Patfull. Christensen, who wants a fresh start away from Victoria, had little difficulty in passing a fitness assessment over the weekend despite needing back surgery at the start of the year.

Brisbane have not given up hope of landing Dayne Beams from Collingwood, despite the Pies severing negotiations last Friday. Brisbane list manager Peter Schwab said yesterday the Lions’ final offer will be selections five and 25, and uncontracted midfielder Jack Crisp, who was offered a two-year contract extension, would move home to Victoria.
