The ball wasn't dead. The batsman hadn't finished his shot stride.
It's not like the batsman took extra steps around the crease and was then stumped, he was stumped in the motion of playing a shot, he just happened to have been moving at a slower speed than a batsman generally does.
It was horrendous technique by the SL Batsman, as I said above you ground your back foot if you miss, you never transition onto your front foot.
It is completely different to the example you gave.
