The academy picks are a bit of a rort this year.

It's fair game if the Northern clubs have rights to a couple of second round talents or maybe a first rounder once every few years. But this will be the second year Sydney have gotten a top 3-5 talent after finishing top 4.

GWS as well already have a ridiculous amount of talent on their list and after finishing middle of the road get dibs on 2x top 10 players.

Brisbane isn't as bad.. but even they get a couple of cheapies between the later first and second round.

Victorian clubs don't get anywhere near this amount of father/sons... so why are the discounts the same?

Question - are draftee heights & weights listed in their profiles taken at the beginning of the season or more current?

Curnow, Francis & Burton all listed at 191cm but look taller.

Even SOSOS is listed at 190cm but I'm sure he's at around 193cm now.

Disagree. I look at it as a positive that we are finally getting top talent come out of NSW and QLD. Need to keep their home grown talent local to help inspire the local kids and continue to build the pipeline of talent there.

Something's are bigger than the clubs, we need to look after the interests of the game.

As long as the bidding system penalizes them, it'll be okay.

They can take 1 Heeney a year but the rest of their picks will be ordinary.

You can see the mad scramble GWS had to do this year to get enough points.

It is a rort because a pile of crap picks is not worth a 1st round draft pick (especially in a weak draft). Even though we benefited from it( getting pick 8), academy clubs drafting first round academy players shouldn't be allowed to trade out 1st round draft picks to gain more points as it pushes all the picks down the order. Our pick 19 is now really worth about 22.

Can't GWS use a couple of second rounders for the academy and use 10 on someone else?
Not if the bid is before 10 - i believe you are FORCED to use the points from your next available pick and then subsequent available picks if they arent enough.

Theyre banking on there being no bid before 10

But i may be wrong.

Only if the first bid on their academy kids comes after Pick 10.

If the bid comes before then they have to start paying the points from their picks in draft order, beginning with their next pick.

I've started a topic that details the whole process with examples, if you want to take a look. It's a bit to take in, but there are a lot of flow-on effects depending on how things go down which could help us out with SOSOS.

Reckon you're reading too much into it.

There are now many more possible trade scenarios that can benefit multiple clubs. Future pick trading allows clubs to plan in advance for quality talent, as well as being able to satisfy demands for AAA grade players (eg. Treloar). Clubs that are losing a stack of players (like us) can trade them out for average picks, but then turn those picks into less numerous high picks to ensure they get quality replacements.

There is now more flexibility, and the situation hasn't really changed in terms of the draft order once bids are matched.

Previously, Brisbane would simply get their two kids with their 2nd and 3rd round picks. The picks didn't "move up" but the net result is the same. Rather than the player being taken with a later pick and dropping out of the first round, the later pick now moves forward. The players available at subsequent picks haven't changed either way.

Syndey can get Mills with a heap of crap picks instead of pick 14 (and what should be there first pick), but now St Kilda will use that pick to pick up a non academy pick which effectively pushes our pick 19 down a place. I believe this is unfair.

This draft (I am not sure where kids are rated but thinking that a KPD, KPF, MID And half forwards are our greatest needs)
Next year draft is more of an elite midfield class so cashing in on KPP this year is must.

Pick 1 - KPD Jacob Weitering
Pick 8 - KPF (Weideman, Curnow)
or
Pick 8 - MID (Mathieson, Clarke)
Pick 11 - MID/FWD (Ah Chee,Clarke, Milera)
Pick 19 - FWD/MID (Jade Gresham, Balic)
or
Pick 19 - KPP (Collins)
Pick 59 - SOSOS

But at the same time the system has allowed Carlton to snag pick 8. The way it's worked this year is brilliant, every struggling vic team bar St Kilda has two picks in the top 10. It's taken nine years but bottom sides have regained the capacity to load up on top picks which was afforded to Hawthorn under the PP system.

Part of that has come from selling future picks. We haven't yet seen the down side of trading future 1st round picks. Lets see how the Cats are going in 3years. First pick this year is in the 60s with no 1st rounder next year.

Makes it interesting, that's for sure. Top sides need players, bottom sides need picks... could mean either a two tiered competition, or a more even one where poorer teams are able to build the nucleus of talented players that prevents young guns from wanting to leave. Certainly hope for Geelong's sake that this trade period launches them back into premiership contention because they'll be in a world of pain if it backfires.

Even if it works for Geelong it will had long term effects. They will need to nail future picks to not bottom out badly in the future.
