On Gresham, he does look impressive! People keep mentioning him being similar to Murph but I would like to make another point. Probably GWS's two best midfield recruits since inception are Treloar and Shiel, they are both only 180cm (2 cm taller than Gresham).

Wouldn't be surprised if SOS takes Burton & McKay. There's our lead up KPF & Future CHF for the next 10 years....
Don't forget Burton has goals on playing midfield, which I think he'll do reading/hearing about his hunger. Could play similar to Pavlich (192cm) and Goodes in that he rotates between forward and the middle - would ideally like to grow a few more cms but is already a good size.

I'm really struggling to buy into the Gresham hype right now.

177cm means he would be the equal smallest on our list (Tutt is 177 & Smith is 178cm) so unless he has superior skills & workrate, you have to wonder what he has to offer us presently.

Besides, we have so many glaring deficiencies that it would make far more sense to build a "big" list right now. In a couple of years time, if a small mid/forward was around and it was agreed that we needed a player of that type, only then would I advocate the drafting of one.
He's 178 cm (as per the combine), which is only 2 cm shorter than both Marc Murphy and Darcy Parish.

Given his skill-set, exposed form and previous leadership ability (Northern Knights captain). I actually see a lot of Murphy/Ben Cousins about the way he plays.

I can see your concern regarding the size of our list with Tutt, Smith etc, but we'd be mad not to seriously consider him because of his height.

Rly like the look of bonner. A real hawthorn like player. Just so classy and great disposal.

B: Buckley Future FB Plowman
HB: Docherty Weitering Bonner

Would be very dangerous on the rebound. Could even play bonner on a wing kicking inside 50
I get the Birchall comparisons but I could also see him playing a role similar to Brodie Smith at Adelaide.

Happy to stockpile talls if the correct ones are there at the right value but what if there's a Jesse Hogan at pick 1 next year? I'd rather wait a year to get in the quality that we need as we aren't moving much higher anytime soon.

We could take a gun mid this year and an elite KPP next year as we should once again have strong picks.

Mids are easier to find and the club should be looking at elite talls in the top 5 next year, no more 50/50 Watson's and McCarthy's. I want a gun.

Pretty sure there is no star KPP next year. If there is he is under developed thus far. That's what the pundits have said anyhow.
Fair enough then, point still stands that we aren't going anywhere anytime soon and we need to cover all areas, not just KPP.

Generally the guns go top 5 (Franklin, Roughy, JJK, Hogan to an extent), I'd love a player like that who we can just build a side around.

Sick of having speculative talls on our list, projects are okay but we've had to many that never work out.

I don't subscribe to best available talent all the time if it means another Yarran or Menzel flakey type. We need more solid players who will more likely to produce the goods on a weekly basis than a Menzel or Yarran.
Surely best available can include "flakey" in its assessment of if they fit the best available tag?

Maybe their Flakiness allowed them to land a pick X and if they were not "flakey" they would have gone 10, 20, 30 picks earlier....

Well certain posters on this board have concluded that Milera is 'flakey', I'm not sure that's a fair assessment.

I looked him up in an online player guide and they had him at 177 but what's a cm between friends anyway. ;)

I genuinely believe the game has evolved over the past 4-5 years to such an extent that smaller players are not being considered as much as in the past. The trend for the big-bodied mid (ie. Josh Kennedy & Cripps) has lead to the need to have even taller KPP's than in the past too. Even rucks have to be 200cm+ to be considered legitimate.

I just can't see us picking up players who are under 180-182cm during this three-year rebuild, the focus will be on bigger units in every department.

Surely you just take the best player, no? Who gives a shit how tall they are? If they can play, they can play. I'm sure you don't want any more Shaun Hampson's running around, do you?

We're having enough trouble working out the order of the best players this draft let alone who will be the best 12 months from now. Also I believe Weitering wasn't even in the so called pundits considerations 12 months ago, but is now the clear No.1 this year.

As they say, 12 months is a long time in footy and a 17 year old draftee's life.

I think you're right in that the game is trending towards taller mids, but a) there's always a place for the smaller blokes, and b) who's to say the trend won't swing the other way in the next 5 years as the game continues to evolve?

Gary Ablett - 182cm
Lachie Neale - 176cm
Dylan Shiel - 182cm
Joel Selwood - 182cm
Tom Liberatore - 182cm
Marc Murphy - 180cm
Sam Mitchell - 179cm
Dan Hannebery - 182cm

Gresham is 177/178 now depending on where you look, but it's not inconceivable that he'd add a cm or 2 over the next year and a bit. Even if he doesn't, and tops out at 178cm, if the kid can play we can certainly find a role for him. We'll have a high pick next year to go after one of those prototype 190cm, inside/outside, running/marking/tackling beasts that seem to be in vogue.

Now, all that being said, if we're tossing up between say Gresham and Bonner at 19, and rate them both about the same, then it may be prudent to pick the player that we think fits the modern game better. However if we're talking Gresham vs. Dunkley...well, I'm happy to give the littler bloke a crack.

If Weideman is still available at #11, we should take the punt and take him, despite the query on his ankle. And it is a possibility he could slide that far.

That is exactly what will happen !!

The trend now is bigger & bigger and until that has been fully exploited, it will continue for some time yet.

However, there will be the re-emergence of the 'mosquito fleet' in the future in a bid to offset/combat that trend.
