Top 5 List of priorities for this draft

-Small forward, in deep need of a pressure forward and some classy goal sense. Bates and McCarthy have showed promise but we need a more dynamic type, Lang seems to lack a bit of flashy class.
-Ruckman, still need another big ruck to fill the void of a another ruck crisis, got rid of a few and only brought in the one.
-Small defender, I think Bews will hold this spot down pretty solid but we do need another backup, Cunico will probably be swung to the wing this season in the VFL.
-Big Body Mid, so project JJ is terminated, why not roll the dice on another one with a late pick and get some clearances in the VFL, Gore and JJ are gone after all.
-Rebounding defender, so Thurls will be a 200 game player but we could go with another seeing Enright will most likely go at the end of 2017.

*Missed key defender, forgot Domsy would most likely hang em up. Given a poor Draft pool perhaps trying something like Toohey on a rookie list is an option.

These are gunna be hard to find in this draft as we all know, so hopefully some good DFAs are available.

have a look at this guide on the draft order, maybe outdated but not bad. Darcy MacPherson as a late pick looks good, granted the dogs dont use F/S.

I can actually see a point of picking up several (not all) project players and developing bodies with those late picks- players that can be shaped to come online in 2 years' time instead of line up behind everyone else for a midfield spot, become disenchanted at lack of opportunity and leave after 2 years, wasting coaching time and resources. I know we already have a few developing on the rookie list but why not a mix of immediate depth players plus a couple of raw recruits?

As usual, I expect Wells to recruit locally plus country Vic and SA/WA country players. His methods appear to have worked well to date.

Just out of interest- do we have any native Queenslanders on our list other than Smith?

My view based on what we require from a list perspective is probably Defenders as a priority.

I'd probably focus on a Key Defender, 2x Mid/Small Defender, Key Utility, Ruckman, Key Foward, General Utility, Mid with pace.

Yep- that's the next big hole to open up on the field, isn't it?
Makes you realise how lucky we've been, keeping a good core defensive group intact over many years.

Duhhh sorry guys completely forgot Lonergan would most likely retire. Youre right we do need another KPD :p Delaneys not enough haha.

Like the logic Teriyaki: and our demographics means we need, in fact, to draft players who can be patient. The big bodied mid is an obvious long term need, but I think even more crucial is tall defenders. I'm not sure we will fit Taylor, Kolo, Mackie, Lonergen and Henderson into one team next year, but we really have stuff all back up in defence. So the project player logic looks sound also because of the belief that defenders can be built (esp. by M. Scarlett).

Like you Teri, I'm scanning the SA and WA candidates, but have a bit more homework to do on them and a couple of others.

If I were looking at a project player it wouldn't be from this draft with the picks we have and certainly not a an interstate kid.

We do need another development Big Mid as you've stated Jansen and Gore have gone, I wouldn't mind two for two, one draftee kid and a mature aged (20-22yr) youngie strong bodied.

Another medium defender like Thurlow (190cm) we need another that's for sure.

Small forward?...we do already have the 3 you've mentioned including Gregson, so there's 4 we already have, we need them to mature to improve and that's coming. Also Bates and McCarthy are right to go after long lay off's through injury.
I think we have enough in those 4 and then there's Menzel although taller can rove packs.

After the Smith deal I'm satisfied with our ruck strength we do bat a lot deeper and with the return of Vardy our tall group is further strengthened, I'm happy with Lucey and the kid from SA rucking the reserves.

Cunico definitely a winger to me as well, big potential with plenty of time to develop since we've held onto the likes of Cowan. We could look to draft a tall winger to go with Cunico, depends if Wells has his eye on one, if he has he should pull the trigger. I think on the back of good form Cunico may play seniors next year, I like the way he played the season out,.....plenty of touches in some good display's of the talent.

With the loss of Johnson, the uncertainty of Menzel and Kersten's poor form I'd like a medium forward as much as a medium defender, but we do need a good one.
Will Wells find one with such late picks? Maybe next year we'll be better positioned for a quality pick draftee or two, but we still need one no doubt.

Heard pretty good things about Cunico

I thought we had 7, unless we have confirmed a Rookie upgrade?
Off: Kelly, Stokes, Rivers, Macintosh, Hartman, Blease, Johnson, Walker, Simpson, Jansen, Gore - which is 11 players to replace minus the 4 we traded in? I actually thought it was 12, but I might have included Toohey (rookie) in that.

By my records if we take 4 players in the ND we still need 3 more players, so they can be either Rookie upgrades, Delisted Free Agents or from the Pre Season Draft.

The Rookie Draft is different, and how many vacancies will depend on who we upgrade. So far we only have one vacancy that I am aware of (Toohey), but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few current rookie listed players be upgraded

I think with those picks we just simply take best available, but wouldn't be surprised to see Geelong take a punt on players who are a) mature state league players, b) bottom-aged juniors, or c), players maybe slid due to injury.

I am probably more interested in if there are any DFA targets. Could somebody like Moore or Young from Port be available, or Grant from Bulldogs? There will be a few players still on lists that are uncontracted for next year, or players already delisted who might be worth a punt.

Not quite. We need at least 44 players on the list (including rookies) and we currently have 38, so 6 spots to fill.

As for potential picks - I really want Davin Ferreira. Also like Jadyn Brind (schoolmate of Gregson's), Mason Redman, Brendan Dew and Matthew Nunn. But I'm biased towards the croweaters.

So am I, especially when your picks are late and they've played SANFL. Scoop them up!

Was supposed to quote both. Bloody phone.

Any how makes you wonder if Michael Talia was worth the punt, Sydney got him for a 4th didnt they?
I think that would've been a great move for us to take Talia. The leaking thing I don't really care about. He's. Good player and swans got him very cheap. I suspect it would've been hard to convince him to come though. As he probably wouldn't have played many games next season. So you'd have to get him to buy in for the long term.

I'm liking Mason Redman SA, a goal kicking medium forward who reads the play really well a strong mark at his height of 187cm. Just has that look of future AFL clever forward all over him.
I'd be happy if we draft this kid with our first pick.

I don't know if I'm over reacting but my instincts tell me we've got a special in Jordan Cunico. Time will tell I guess but I've been impressed. I'll be watching him closely.

He started very quietly last year (looked a little overawed). After a short break he returned and began to show plenty at the end of the year.
If he can develop a very big engine he could be useful,he glides over the turf, he has good general skills. For a player he should model himself on - its Isaac Smith. Long way to to get that level tho.

I think he was a little behind physically when drafted but as you said had some 25 poss games in the end and impressed the coaching staff enough to show he's a talent.

Will take a punt and say we will get Sam Guerts from (Dromana) and Kieran Lovell (Tasmania) will slip down the order for us :)

Did he do an MCL and miss bout 6 -8 weeks as well last year?
Thought he was doing well prior and came back well post his injury…

Definitely one to watch next year for mine.
