Take out all the non football related expenses and it seems to be low $30m's. If Melbourne had $12m in non-football revenue then they've probably got at least $10m in non football expenses.

A bit like the company that wants to be a one stop shop. Offers a service for revenue but also incurs costs in offering those services even though it isn't the primary source of income.

North interests me as they try to consolidate their presence in the finals. Dogs as a test case of climbing out of the 'basement 6' into the finals. Saints as they were wooden spooners last year, negative asset position & it's challenges to survive.

Essendon equalisation contribution $270k - do they profit from the FIXture & does the $270k reflect that benefit ?

I'm sorry there's a pun here that is going over my head. I know both Essendon & Carlton are part time occupants at Etihad and next year fixture allow both clubs to host some big ticket matches at the MCG to maximise revenue.

Do Essendon profit from the fixture.? In 2015 relative to other clubs possibly, certainly much less than previous years. However against this years ?270K possibly to an extent. Anzac Day offset by only 2 Friday night games, only one of them a home game. Carlton only played once. Lots of Sunday games which are commercially unattractive. You couldn't compare Essendons fixture in this respect to anything like the Pies, Tigers or Hawks.

2016 will be even more unattractive commercially so I would argue Essendon is not paying unders. Don't forget big clubs like Essendon and their ability to create big matches (Anzac Day / Dreamtime and now Farmers game) are a driver of the wider revenue growth in the game which ends up in the other clubs pockets in the end (Eg: new TV deals).

The Collingwood Football Club today announced an operating profit before depreciation and amortisation of $1,880,927 for the financial year ending October 31, 2015.
Highlights of Collingwood’s 2015 financial year include:
......
*15th consecutive profit
Obviously forgetting 2008 when their net loss was $3.2mil after writing off $5.7mil loss on a couple of their pubs. Sure they made an operating profit before those write offs, but it's a bit disingenuous to say 15 consecutive profits when they show the different results for 2015 including profit before abnormal event, profit before depreciation and bottom line statutory profit.

Do your lot share each Anzac Day or is it yours every 2nd year? What was the go in 2015?

Fair dinkum &/or so?

My question was:
Essendon equalisation contribution $270k - do they profit from the FIXture & does the $270k reflect that benefit ?

Melbourne reported operating profit looks more like a surplus due in full to increased AFL distribution - distribution up $1.2m, reported profit $562k after equalisation payments of $870k.

Melbourne fans might look beyond the PR.

Melbourne's other sources of revenue all increased, though, which is a big positive. It just means that without increased AFL funding they wouldn't have been able to have invest as much into their football department and still record a profit.

Carltons 2015 Annual Report has been released and is here. For comparison Annual reports from 2008-2014 can be found here.

Alternately you can use this rather rushed table

Saints financial report is now available:

http://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/StKilda/Images/151130-STK-Financial-Report-2015.pdf

A significantly lower loss (847k) than the last two years. However, this seems to have been solely due to a big increase of AFL funding totalling $3.2m.

Merchandising revenue more than halved to a very low 402k. Report also indicates that they have $3.7m of trade payables owing to the AFL.

I don't understand how our merchandise revenue could dip so markedly, especially when we had a better year on field than 2014. The general lack of revenue growth is a real concern, despite things externally appearing to have improved since Finnis arrived.

Expectations for the 2015 season were very low so that would not have helped. The loss of the NZ game won't help next year either. The Saints now seem to be completely reliant on the AFL for survival, so a lot of things will need to go right on-field and off for that to change in the next few years.

Interesting note: the $16,245,840 in AFL income that St Kilda recieved in 2015 is 250k short of what Gold Coast received from the AFL in 2014 ($16,506,277). Depending on how the Suns go this year, they could actually get less from the league than the Saints.

How much is that on top of the standard AFL distribution? $6m?

Great work on this. Got a template for it somewhere if you're willing to share? (can PM and I'd suggest putting your handle on it down the bottom too)

The standard base distribution in 2014 was $7.514m. The salary cap in 2015 went up by $289k as per the initial CBA then an extra $150k for both 2015 and 2016 was announced mid 2014 so the base distribution will go up by this $439k in 2015. The AFL has given every club $1.2mil each year in TV monies for the cash increase that happened for 2007-11 TV deal and they continued that for 2012-16 but for some reason dont call that the base distribution, and you know they will still all get that $1.2mil between 2017-22 TV deal. The extra TV monies for the 2012-16 TV deal each club was guaranteed a distribution of $500k in 2012, $575k in 2013, $650k in 2014, $725k in 2015 and $800k in 2016, the AFL called this an equal future fund component distribution, and the AFL had a disequal future fund component for the extra TV monies in 2012-16.

So in 2015 the true base guaranteed distribution each club gets is really $9.878 mil.

In 2014 the AFL in their annual report they said GC got $13,326,607 and GWS got $13,548,317 but in their respective annual reports the GC showed a distribution of GC $16,506,277 and GWS $20,556,332. Those differences of $3,179,670 + $7,008,015 = $10,187,685. The AFL reported their New Markets expenditure was $9,887,000. Not sure why there is a $300,000 difference but it could be a timing issue and the way each entity reports a committed sum either as a receivable/payable or only when cash is received/paid.

I'm not sure I approve of the Club/ Gale explaining the financial reports, comparing our profit calculations with Collingwood's....

But, they did: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2015-12-01/richmond-business-performance-rock-solid

Whats the big deal, some supporters asked bout the lower than expected profit and Gale gave an explanation to the reasons why which after i read that made more sense and understanding......The Pies actual net profit was bout 850K which initially i assumed was 1.8 million going by headline media reports...

Depends how you view the 1.3 million paid in equalisation taxes.
