Just curious about people's opinion on whether providing we got Schache, how much game time would he be looking at next season. Boyd and McCartin haven't played a huge amount of games in their first year/years. Fitness of Freeman and Close would probably be determining factors i reckon.

not much if Close and Freeman are fit

Interesting to note that when things started getting desperate for the Dandenong Stingrays in their prelim final on Saturday, Weitering was moved forward. Kicked two goals and missed a set shot for another. He was comfortable playing as a leading forward; knew where and when to lead, gets separation and is a strong overhead mark. Worth bearing in mind if we happen to miss out on Schache.

AFL Draft 2015: Jacob Weitering firms as Carlton’s No.1 draft pick after stellar display

“He is the complete package, a generational player, up there with Darren Glass and Matthew Scarlett in terms of key defenders from the U18 competition,” an AFL coach said yesterday. “He is a 300-game player with leadership qualities.”

Two months ago the favourite for No.1 was seen as a close choice between Weitering and Murray Bushrangers’ 199cm key forward Josh Schache.

But with Weitering to go at pick No.1, it will leave Brisbane to snare Schache at No.2 and Gold Coast choosing between West Adelaide utility Aaron Francis and Geelong midfielder Darcy Parish.

He sounds great but I don't think we would have picked him.Its good in a way that we really need to pick for need this draft and that player might be the second best player in the draft.

He'd have to be absolutely tearing it up consistently in the reserves before getting a chance.

I'd be surprised if he didn't get 2-3 games at the back end of the year, assuming he stays fit. McCartin debuted and Boyd played a lot at GWS. It just happened to turn out the Dogs forward line was working exceptionally well without him.

If it happens that our forwards do the same next year he might stay under wraps, but that seems unlikely.

High draft picks are like Christmas presents and everyone wants to show off their new toys to the members. Doesn't hurt to make sure the new toy feels useful and loved too.

Of course, injuries aren't uncommon with young KPPs so we might not get the option, but I reckon he'll play a few games.

Yeah and isn't there a suggestion that Weitering is your atypical Vic Metro boy?

The last thing we need is to draft another flight risk.

Plays for Vic country with schache

Yeah ... but Schache is from the Murray Bushrangers....

and Weittering is from Dandenong Stingrays....

...I'm not an "expert" on Melbourne localities, but I suspect that you would hardly call Dandenong "country".....
(Unless you call Strathpine/Springwood "country" ...????)

Realistically what is the chance we can get pick 3 as well as a compo/pp combo? Francis looks so good but just can't see us getting the picks required but stranger things have happened...
I hope the club isn't making its list management plans based on it. I assume they aren't.

You normally makes plan based on the most likely scenario and the worst case scenario. In this situation, while getting pick 3 remains a theoretical possibility, it would be very optimistic for us to make any decisions predictated on an assumption that we'll be getting another top 5 pick.

Weitering is from Mt. Eliza (around 60km from Melbourne).

To put it into context for Brisbanites, that's only a bit further than Caboolture to Brisbane. Probably not "country" as such.

Vic Country includes areas pretty damn close/in the Melbourne metropolitan area in order to balance having two junior teams in a state where four million of its 5.8 million inhabitants live in what's technically "Vic Metro".

Paige Cardona wrote a draft summary that I stumbled upon. Felt good reading this, bolded part especially. Just makes me feel a little more secure about our future.

Eric Hipwood
Height: 200cm, Weight: 82kg
Club: Aspley
Position: Key Utility

There must be something in the water in Queensland, because the Lions have made a habit of listing 198cm+ beanpole prospects from their Academy in recent years. With a booming left foot that penetrates well beyond 50 metres, and athleticism that’ll measure off the Richter scale at this year’s combine, the Lions are licking their lips at the raw, exciting prospect that they’ll have exclusive access to thanks to their Academy system. I loved Hipwood’s four-goal performance against Tasmania in the Championships; he made smart leads, impressed with sure hands overhead, and looked ultra-cool and composed kicking for goal. Down back, he’s quick off the mark, competes well below his knees and gets front position, playing the percentages with a strong spoil. There’s a lot of Harris Andrews about Hipwood, it’s a scary prospect to think these two will be the pillars of Brisbane’s spine in the coming years.

agree. saw eric play a few neafl games this season looks exceptional, better than harris at same time last year. lets hope that translates to the afl next season or the next few seasons, could be a slower developer. either way exciting times ahead i feel for the lions.

I think unless injuries come into play he will probably play somewhere between 7-10 games. We would be very keen to develop him and the Neafl isn't the same standard as the other 2nd tier comps. If we can genuinely show to be a contender for finals early in the season this could affect it too, but otherwise I would not be surprised to see him play double figure games.

He will get a handful but really he isnt ready size wise. Expect nothing be happy to see a handful of games late. If he plays lots it will be because of injuries.

I think he was referring to Schache, not Hipwood but I don't see either getting more than a handful of games if we have a near full list.

Hipwood has grown so quickly that I hope the new fitness team are super-conservative with his program. Sounds like he was playing on a wing at U16s before suddenly sprouting three inches. That's a whole new level of torque on joints and hamstrings and backs that haven't had a long time to adjust.

I'm absolutely not an expert in this, but that does seem like a pragmatic course of action. From the sounds of Hipwood's game, I'd be surprised if we were in a hurry to turn him into a big, heavy KPF/KPD. I'd hope that his program would be geared towards attaining a baseline level of body strength and then mostly towards durability.

At a guess, it sounds like he'd be reasonably well suited to playing the role that Paps has played this year. Where he probably wouldn't be as good a runner, it sounds like he may be a more naturally aggressive user of the ball which could be handy coming off half back. Depending on how well he goes over the next few years, it might give us more flexibility to release Paps back upfield a bit to use his running on the spread, but now having developed the ability to rotate through the backline.

Getting first year players into the senior team and performing well straight away has arguably been the single thing we do best over the past couple of years. There might be more opportunities for the likes of Schache and Hipwood than we think.

I'm not into Paige bashing but if she has seen Hipwood play live more than twice over the last two years I'd be surprised.

Yes love Paige's writing skills and she definitely sees the best in players. Not so sure about her assessing footballers ability. If Hipwood turns out to be about three quarters as good as that assessment., I will be happy

Being a Brisbane supporter I'm familiar with an injury list than a full list.

I think he will play partly due to opportunities arising from form or injury and partly to appease the kids ego. The days of letting kids develop for 2-3 years in the ressies are gone, particularly for high draft picks. Kids nowadays want everything immediately and won't accept waiting and biding their time. Also I don't know if our key forward alternatives will be any better with Paine and Close coming off long term injury, Staker and Mcguane retired and McStay looking more comfortable in the backline. I only see Freeman as a lock for a KPF spot and he is still green and relatively unproven.
