Who is Nick Weller? Haven't heard him mentioned in any academy conversations?

Quigley has mentioned him a few times from memory. I could be wrong about who mentioned him but he's been spoken of a few times

So...
B Keays: midfielder
E Hipwood: KPP
M Chol: ruck / utility
C Wagner: midfielder
N Weller: midfielder / defensive forward
R William: halfback / wing

Good variety in the types we're looking at this year. Agree it would've been good to see Wylie Buzza in contention, however it was not to be. Given our recruiting team have been watching these guys for the whole year (and prior to that) I'd be happy to defer to their judgment.

So Keays and Hipwood are tipped to go early in the draft. Sounds like a bit of interest in William so maybe mid-draft, while Wagner is a chance late. Chol and Weller sound like rookie prospects. With the vacancies on our playing list, wouldn't mind if we picked up most of these guys. Would be good for list retention as well as promoting the code/the Academy.

If Chol goes through to the rookie draft I know nothing about footy!! Athletically he is the most exciting QLD footballer, could be anything!

I would imagine that Chol might be next on the list after Keays and Hipwood for the Lions to look at. Given that Leuey will be gone, Martin's career at the Lions may not be as long as hoped if he decides to move on at the end of his contract, Smith hasn't really come on to any great degree. It would really just leave West as a true ruckman that we could count on with any satisfaction of being up to standard.

If Chol was available after we had secured Shache, Keays and Hipwood, I would guess that we take him. William is the other one who is a bit of a different type of player. In a supposedly weak draft I would think that both might be gone before we get to take them though.

From memory, Buzza and Wagner were only nominated for the state combine, which suggests that there wasn't a whole lot of interest from elsewhere for them. I might be wrong though.

Without knowing the attitudes and work ethic of the players it is a little hard to know how they would go in a professional AFL environment. I suppose you have to go with those you think will make it first, and then take risks later in the draft.

If they're picked before our next pick we can still take them via the academy bidding now that they're nominated.

The points matching only needs to happen on bids for players upto and including the 3rd round doesn't it? After that the points difference once the 20% discount is applied pretty much means we can take them if we want? Or am i remembering something completely different? If so i'm not sure either of Chol or William would attract a bid that high, so we should be fine to get them if we want.

FWIW Schwabby has said that they'd like to pick up a mature ruck.

And as dlanod has alluded to, how early the Lions take Chol depends entirely on when/if another team selects him, and whether the Lions want to match that.

Correct, the fixed discount (20% of pick 18 =197points) is applied to all bids after 18. From pick 56 onwards, it's a simple case of next pick available being used.

Worth remembering, if we are required to go into debt, we can carry that debt into the corresponding round next year.
i.e Keayes, Hipwood and William take all our picks with points associated, and Chol get bid at 40, we can move our 3rd round selection back the next year, and this won't devalue our first round selection.

A lot of flexability in the system, something we should be exploring and trying to take advantage of.

It is worth taking advantage of. i wouldn't want to go into debt next year though, with Allison being considered a top 5 pick at this stage.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I know there's some sort of restriction on getting academy player with a debt from a previous draft.

dlanod, can you enlighten us?

yup, spot on, I think alot of people missed the link between academy bidding being introduced and future draft picks being introduced.. I would imagine that this is the exact scenario these systems were devised for.. to allow northern teams the option of selecting basically any academy player they want but giving other teams a small window of opportunity.

it will mean that we need to monitor our academy kids closer than ever and have stability in our front office so we are prepared a year in advance for top prospects (Allison).

If we play our cards right and the talent keeps coming through, in 4-5 years we could have realistically 10 homegrown players in the team..
Already the 2 kids from the academy that have played senior footy look excellent and the superlatives for the next crop are even higher.. bloody exciting!

Leuy LongerCombo nailed it.
