Hmm.. not sure what to think about that TBH... he is going to be a damn skinny player that's for sure... Probably going to look like a taller Grant from the Dogs and his body never developed properly to be able to compete at AFL level and he was a better junior footballer too.

Hipwood being so light realistically makes him a couple of years away from senior football which may push him further down the order.

No reason to think that he won't be able to put on the weight required no need to push the extra mass on a frame that is obviously still developing.

Jarrad Grant, pick 5.

It all depends if he was of an overly skinny and light build before his growth spurt. He might very well have just spurted up first and will fill out later.

Southern clubs will also have to consider the go home factor when they bid. We are lucky that in recent years a couple of Qlders have wanted to go back home.

I've been hoping that we'd pick up a couple of extra academy guys beyond Hipwood and Keays but given the squeeze for list spots with all these hypothetical new recruits it's starting to look pretty unlikely.

We might not yet end up with all the new recruits though. End of the day, we need to be able to get a deal done. I believe Bell will be a priority, Walker and Jansen is pretty much done and dusted. Astbury and Bastinac are very much late to the party, both decent players that would need a decent trade. We simply might not have enough to be able to trade.

If we need 2 extra list spots to get enough draft picks at the draft to get the academy kids, we might need to pass on these 2. For me, it would then come down to who is more valuable, Astbury and Bastinac, or the guys currently off contract that haven't been delisted yet. If we needed, 2 extra list spots to be able to have enough draft picks to pay for the academy kids, then i cut some of our guys if Astbury and Bastinac are better quality players.

Totally agree
We may need to delist and then rookie list Paine. This would enable us to have some flexibility on draft night - do we go with another academy kid (Williams) with our 4th selection OR do we keep a spot for the PSD.

Already bigger than Grant...will end up a tank :thumbsu:

Yeah wouldn't surprise me if Chol or William were bidded in the main draft. We'll be able to pick them up reasonably cheaply, but will need spots to do so.

Listening Schwab(?) earlier this year, it appears we're transparent in our policy of recruiting local kids if they are rated similarly to interstate kids. I know at some point we'll need let 1 or 2 go to another team, but it'll be a damn shame if that started this year, just as the Academy is starting to bear fruit.

I don't see it as a terrible thing as they can be go home targets for us in 2 years

There have been plenty of Queenslanders who never went home. N Riewoldt, Tippett, Armitage, Lee Spurr, Ricky Petterd...cannot guarantee they'll want to come back once they've seen the bright lights of Melbourne. And to bring them back we might need to pay a premium like Dayne Beams.

Always better is the bird in hand.

Not logged on for a long time but regularly look on big footy forum. Seriously people, if we want a winning culture at the club, we as supporters should be leading the way. Lets stop the negative crap and have a positive outlook on moving forward. Positive or pountless

Minor counterpoint: the club never seemed really proactive about chasing them until recently. I know some view homesickness as inevitable but it does seem to have a strange correlation with a home town club getting in their offer and offering them very good money to move.

Who is Jacob Allison? It was mentioned in an article in The Age that we don't want to trade our 2016 First Round or go into deficit as he is a very highly rated Academy prospect we will want to pick up.

First contract is the key. Even Reiwoldt says he was struggling in the first two years. Get them early.

There's been plenty of talk here about him. Academy kid. Tall midfielder with a booming 60m kick

Early days and a lot can change in a year, but good judges are saying he's a likely top 5 on current form.

Find his highlights packages online. Someone posted one recently where he calmly slots a set shot from 55m out. Post high.

Sounds good, lock him in!

I wonder if we've avoided targeting QLDers in the past because we don't want to encourage other clubs to do it to us? It's a game we always lose because of the numbers.

Course, that policy hasn't really deterred clubs from poaching kids at all. But that might have been the theory?

I think it's even more effective if the "don't worry, we'll get you home" campaign starts from draft day. Once that seed is planted, it would be difficult to counter the pull of home. Why get emotionally attached, grow roots, emotionally invest in a club, if you're gonna leave in two years. But it has to be a sustained campaign of regular calls of support during their vulnerable and lonelier moments, assuring them that soon, things will be better once the club rescues them back home.

Reckon that is a well worn tactic other clubs have used on our draftees for years.
