Schache struggles a great deal to get separation and relies heavily on his strength for goal scoring opportunities. That is not going to work early in his career and I would expect he to be one like Hawkins who takes a few years before we see him be able to compete consistently at AFL level.

Yeah? He seems quick and agile. I suppose if we get Dixon and have Close and McStay as support it works out because Schache will have plenty of opportunity to develop his game and get it ready for AFL.

I don't know how he is going to feel if he spends 2 years at NEAFL waiting behind Close, Dixon, Freeman, McStay etc. Other clubs would want a highly rated young KPF.

Then they're free to pay for them. We can't not draft a player because we're worried they'll sook and run away if they're not best 22 the year they walk in. Gold Coast and GWS fielding teams full of kids seems to have inflated the expectations of how quickly kids think they should be playing senior footy.

I have had a similar argument in the past about having too many KPF's developing. But as another has already mentioned we are more than likely not going to have Staker, Maguire, MaGuone or Paine next year. Also Burke is on his final year as a rookie? and Merrett is proving to be a bit injury prone.

Fantasy scenario sees us get Dixon and Rance as well as Schache and Hipwood.

A first choice forward line of Close, Dixon and McStay leaves Freeman, Hammer and Schache in the reserves. First choice defenders Clarke, Rance, Gardiner and Merrett leave Andrews, Hipwood and Beasley in the twos.

If anything we will need to add another KPD with a late pick/ rookie.

If he is good enough he won't have to wait. Close, Freeman and McStay are hardly established players and we haven't got Dixon yet.

If we get Rance I think Merrett may be in trouble also, particularly if Andrews keeps developing at his current rate, might be reserves bound. That is also assuming Merrett isn't forced to retire (remembering he has a very similar back issue to the one that forced Leppa himself to retire)

If we get Rance and don't get a forward, Merrett could spend the rest of his career in the forward line.

If Merrett doesn't get back on the field in the next month i wouldn't be to worried about where he plays more a case if he ever plays again. I am struggling to see what is the point of keeping him on the list if this injury has got the better of him. He is at the very end of his career and we have almost moved on by investing time into Clark Gardiner Paparone and now Andrews down back. I hope he does get back on the field and plays well but at present i don't feel confident.

Assuming Maguire, Staker, McGuane, Paine and Bourke are gone after this year, then our KPPs are (followed by number of games played):

Merrett 172
Clarke 46
Gardiner 23
McStay 17
Close 15
Andrews 8
Freeman 4
Beasley 1
Hammelman 0

Who said we don't need experienced KPPs? Only 1 (injury prone of late player) over 50 games experience!

Someone like Rance would not only provide an immediate A grade key defender, also boosts a huge area of inexperience.

And don't even get started on key forwards - whoever we can get our hands on from Dixon, Henderson, Schultz, Carlisle...they are all going to be better than any key forward we have (at this point in time) and provide more experience and mature bodies. Sure our promising kids may one day be better, but that's all they are...kids. How one can expect to regularly compete with key forwards with 17, 15 and 4 games experience..it's just not going to happen.

We are having a poor strike rate in terms of that next KPF - so far all have been signs, Freeman, McStay, Close etc. We need to keep trying on this front and I am all for stacking them up.

GWS did not stop picking KPPs and at one stage had Cameron, Patton, Boyd, McCarthy, Plowman, Tomlinson, Bruce, Haynes etc. I didn't know they had Stewart as well until this year. We should go with picking Schache if that's the right call for our pick and just back ourselves in terms of keeping him.

I am with you 100%. We need Key position players big time.

It was a couple of years ago I think that I was worried we had to many. I think we had just nabbed Paine and Maguone as well as Freeman prior to the draft. Still had Brown, Staker and Merrett as well as Close and Papa developing and Lisle was still on the list. I remember some calling on us to grab another couple of key forwards in the draft and I felt at the time their was not much point as they couldn't be developed sufficiently.

Different story now. This trade/ draft period we will need to add 4 or 5 key position types as the older lads are moved along.

Exciting times indeed.

100% agree with this. He'll be a monster eventually, I love the kid. But it'll take him longer than most and he'll probably be somewhat of a whipping boy like Hawkins was at stages.

Schache's dad played for the Brisbane Bears as a FF. tragically died at only 34.

He's one of us.... Hope we take him with our first.

Shiftersheehan said it's pronounced shack on tac cup this morning. (And there was a Shaq attack joke that followed from someone on the panel)

Also noted Francis from SA is potentially moving ahead of weitering as first pick after his big game v wa and other recent good form.

Wallace had us taking schace at pick 3 in his mock top 20. Still no keays in that top 20.

He's draft makes no sense with Mills and Hopper at 2 and 3

He is suggesting that the team picking 2nd would bid on those two players and so under the new live bidding system they would technically be picked 2nd and 3rd with the matching club forfeiting later picks to secure them early.

Presumably the swans will be looking to trade for soe. Draft picks to match their highly rated academy and f/s picks. Might be some opportunities there.
