If William and Chol were white, they both would be drafted. Fair to say that we need to see some Sudanese players make it at AFL level from the rookie draft before clubs will be willing to select them in the National draft.
Disgusting post!!! Even if you are joking its totally unnaceptable. Go Away.

To put our Trade period in perspective, with a little bit of spin (easier to trace and follow picks this way, not to hide anything, as they have very similar value.)

Out : Aish, Redden
In : Bastinac, Hipwood, Saints 2016 second rounder

Out : 21, 40, 60
In : Bell, Keays, Skinner

Out : Leuenberger
In : Mathieson

Some were a little concerned with what we traded at the time, but with a bit of luck I think we've come out pretty well with all those.

What this draft cemented was that if you're well performed in your underage year but injured in your senior year then you're a very good chance of getting drafted to the lions. We love an injured slider

I'll add him to our Robertson, Close, Golby and god knows how many others list.

Just a general observation that he thinks the lions recruiters are a bunch of racists?
Yeah biggest load of rubbish I have ever read. Sorry but Math is better than Rubin at this stage, and Chol is still seriously green too. William will get rookie listed.....

Senior list:

Key Forwards - Close, Freeman, Walker, Schache, McStay, Hipwood, Skinner
Key Backs - Merrett, Andrews, Clarke, Watts, McStay, Hipwood, Skinner

Starting to put together some real depth there.

Also good to see we drafted two genuine midfielders instead of going for utilities.

Does anybody think rookie listing William and Paine is not fait accompli?

From what I understand, we'd probably need someone else to rookie Paine if we didn't, a la Banfield.

No idea about William. There might still be someone else we rate more highly, and we do have the second pick in the rookie draft.

I really hope we take him though. Even with the academies there just aren't that many draftable Queenslanders around.

Only 4 queenslanders drafted all from Lions academy. You would hope that would grow in the coming years and a few will get picked up in the PSD/Rookie drafts this year.

Glad to see Buzza given a go, will be interesting to see how he goes.

And four is probably as many as there have been for a number of years.

Beasley and Gardiner would count as Key Backs IMO. Watts I'm not so sure of, neither McStay. Both of those guys aren't really KPD's despite being taller than the two i've named, they project more as taller Flankers/ rebounding half backs who can cover off taller guys in a pinch or resting tall mids.

Paine up forward.

Edit: sorry forgot Beasley was a rookie

Really? Beasley and Gardiner key position and Watts and McStay not? I don't think Beasley or Gardiner will ever be genuine key backs given they're barely 190cm. Watts will fill out (if not delisted beforehand) and while McStay may be better suited to being a 3rd tall I think he'll be capable of playing key position.

Being a kpd is more than just height. Both of them are over 191. Just because you're tall doesn't mean you have the game style or attributes to play as a real kpd.

Yes it has been slim pickings, though I recall when Garner came out of Sherwood (western magpies) we had a few drafted that year, but I dont think there was any long careers. If you arent really starring at qld under 18's or more importantly in the academy you wont getting drafted out of qld.

Hence not including Paparone who has shown little to say he could be a key position down the track. Both are listed at 191cm and from seeing them I don't think they're any taller and wouldn't think we plan on using them as key backs. From watching Beasley play I think he's far better suited on medium and smalls and Gardiner will play as a hybrid defender on play on whoever he is required to.

I find this an interesting argument. I'm not buying into the racism side of things, and I'm going to beg the overly-politically-correct to consider whether they actually think that this is a statement of superiority before going nuts.

I don't think the recruiters are racist in the slightest, but I'd think most people agree that different ethnicities have slightly different physical attributes (generally). There are outliers of course (some white men CAN jump :-P) - but I'd be interested to know how much this plays into recruiting.

I remember a few years ago, there was a bit of to-do in AFL media about Indigenous player prospects, and that some of the coaches considered them generally less consistent (I remember Sheedy cracking it at that) - I wouldn't say that about Goodes or Buddy, but for every Goodes, there's at least 1 Jurrah (though I would probably argue that there are plenty of inconsistent white Australian players too)... I've heard people suggest that Indigenous players are generally more naturally athletic as well, or have more flair. There'd be little debate that your average Sudanese person would be far more athletic than your average white Australian. You look at the Draft Combine vertical jump records, and African players have a much higher proportionate representation. So there are pros there, but are there any cons? I don't know.

I'm not calling racism on it from a recruiting point of view - if the recruiters thought a black player had more potential than a white player, I'm sure they'd take them. I'd just be interested to know whether this plays into the process at all, both as pros and cons.

Confirmed last night and today we're as good as taking William with our one and only pick.

agree with you. there have been a couple of posts implying racism re. not drafting william and chol. seeing we passed on wagner what does that say about our views on anglo saxons? what a joke.
Yep you're right.... Sorry.

We offered them a spot in the Lions Academy over a bunch of other prospects.....

Then invested countless hours into their development both on and off the field...

Then despite them being the absolute best option for our club at the picks we had..... we ignored them because they are black.

You're comment actually cheapens their efforts and journey..... And speaks horrible things about the people at the Lions.

Worst post I've read on BigFooty.
brizzy bandit summed it up pretty well.

I'm kind of with spotthedog1 on acuguy 's racism call.

I don't think acuguy was being racist. I got the impression he would have liked to have seen William and Chol selected.
I don't think he was necessarily just having a go at the lions recruiters, although his default position seems to often be fining fault with the club he 'supports' his statement on this occasion was expressed to be aimed at afl clubs, and i'll take him at his word.

I think he was trying (badly) to highlight what he though was institutional racism across the entire afl.
IN that I think he was wrong, the fact that these two players (who were projects) were not selected is statistically insignificant when one considers the vast number of players nominated and not picked.

It isn't all fail though.

I suspect part of his aim was to be deliberately provocative, dickish and trolling, and in that he succeeded admirably. Lots of bites.
