Do we draft a key forward on the assumption that in a few years time we will have a fully functioning midfield and that he will be better than Close, McStay, Freeman, Andrews and Hammelmann.

The problem is that if we get that key forward in the draft, we then have to wait for them to develop.

Barring a couple of examples like Jack Darling, I haven't seen much evidence to indicate that the old adage that "talls take at least 4 years to come on" doesn't still apply.

It will be a painful wait, especially as our midfield is (on paper at least) ready to go.

Yeah unfortunately our list has not been developed all that well. I was always a supporter of going best available at our first pick but in doing so we are looking pretty unbalanced. Getting a little hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I feel like the 08 draft was the big white hope but now we are in danger of missing the bus as that class reaches their peak in a time when we have such large holes in key areas.

Yep, and as most of us feared, our rebuild coinciding perfectly with the compromised drafts was a considerable handicap.

Well we need key backs and key forwards so barring a miracle we could be looking at some very lean years. If we just drafted Lynch instead of Polec.

Life is very easy in retrospect. I don't really remember Lynch being much of a consideration for our first pick that year. I think it was more between Polec, Heppel and Caddy.

Lynch was definitely in the discussion until we upgraded pick 10 to pick 5 as part of the Brennan trade, then suddenly the higher ranked mids like Heppell and Polec came into the equation.

You are right about hindsight though... the Brennan trade seemed like brilliant work by Kerr at the time, but in the end it just netted us Bewick and two go homers in Polec and Karnezis.

At least we got Darcy Gardiner (and Nick Robbo) from Polec in the end.

Yeah I meant in regards to our first pick once it was upgraded. Yeah agree that the initial outcome of that trade looked real positive for us but in the end a disappointing result. Love Dizzy though so the verdict is still out.

It really is why we need to land a Dixon or Carlisle. We need someone who can go now. We have Close and Freeman as developing talls, and they can be the back up 2nd KPF target. But we need someone who can influence a game. I think you can carry a developing tall if you have a quality one along side. Our problem is they are all developing.

We could also really use a key backmen as well.

Yep, we definitely need a short-medium term fix in addition to the long term. If it comes down to which one we use first round picks on, I'll take the short term fix, provided they tick the boxes.

Are priority picks dead and buried? If not we are tracking well to get one. Would help us present a nice package for a big time trade.

Agreed, taking a long term view might backfire if we're extinct by the time the kid matures.....:(

If Melbourne don't warrant one with the new criteria then I don't want our team dropping to the level which requires one. There is talent of this list and some massive gaping holes. Turn around and continue to develop that talent and invest everything we can in filling those holes. Our list as it stands should be middle of the pack, not bottom. We can turn this around with some confidence, development and astute trading.

You're all finally starting to come around. :D

Our young talls need help from someone reliable in front of the big sticks. I've been saying it for over a year now.

This is not new and revolutionary thinking on this board, bato. We've been crying out for someone for years.

It seemed to be when I voiced my opinion last time around. Plenty of people disagreed. Some were even joking around when I made a serious thread...

Haven't seen the posts so can't attest to what they were saying but there's been a lot of clamoring for a key forward. Anyone saying we don't or can just wait is waaaay too optimistic. The cupboard has just been close to bare for options to trade in and the plays we have made have come excruciatingly close but fallen over for various reasons.

Weidemann is a father-son for the Pies isn't he?

Grandfather Grandson.
Nah, not going to happen.

aside from the possibility that we'll have such a high pick from being bottom 4 we might get lucky and not have to use our first pick on Ben Keays he does seem to be rated top 5-10 at the moment am I right? so we might have to use a high pick on him.

would mean the best chance at a 'lock' key forward prospect is to get a top 5-10 pick in return for Aish.

I understand there aren't really many key position players rated highly this year?
