If an academy boy goes to St Kilda because they rate him at pick 5 whereas we rate him at pick 25, is that really a loss to us? We can pick up more (non-Qld) talent that we do rate because that academy boy has been taken above where we rate him. We can and will pick up players who we view as a fair return on investment, that investment including the draft picks required to take them.
So you get a Victorian who you rated at 24 instead of a QLDer you rated at 25?:drunk:

You don't seem to understand my post, but you are a Suns supporter so I'll use shorter words.

If the Saints bid pick 5 on this hypothetical imaginary made up player we would need to use picks 19 (already worth more to us than this 25th rated player right there), 37 and 55, or potentially whatever we got back if Aish or Leuenberger leave. So the club would be getting at least a player (from Victoria or wherever) they rated at 19 or better plus more picks on top of that instead of that Queenslander they rated at 25th. Absolutely a win to not take him.

#cold warm k2? :drunk:

The obvious catch is whether the Lions rate him as a first round prospect. Every man and his dog in BF and the media may rate him pick 1, but ultimately all that matters is where the Lions rate him.
All the experts say he is good chance to be a first rounder. Plus if you look at he's resume, he was;
*All-Australian 2014, kicked seven goals in three matches, while averaging 23 disposals per game.
*All Australian 2015, averaging 28.6 disposals and 5.3 clearances per game, across the carnival.
*Named the Hunter Harrison Medallist (Division 2 MVP).
*TAC Cup footy, averaging 33.5 disposals and five tackles per game across four matches while representing Queensland.
*Has been exposed to senior footy averaging 20.6 disposals and almost three tackles per game.
*Captained Queensland.

If the Lions don't rated him as a first round prospect then the recruiting staff are a bunch of idoits. I do understand where you are coming from though.

Wouldn't be the first person to slide or miss out after an impressive underage career.

I know it's not going to happen but would really like to turn pick 1/2/3 into 2 first round picks. Especially if we get Dixon as well. We still need a clearance specialist and some outside run with pace. I like what Collingwood have done the past few years recruiting contested ball winners and hope we can draft a few natural ball winners as well... I mean Aish, Mayes, Paps, Longer, Docherty, Polec, Karnezis aren't contested ball winners... Our early drafting the past few years has been good but the past 5 years drafting showing us that we haven't tried to draft a natural ball winner for a while with an early pick but more about what we saw as best available at that time.

Inside midfielder is a need, but if we got Dixon and had pick 1-3 and Schache was available, I'd take him everyday of the week over 2 first rounders that would presumably be anywhere between pick 12-18.

Isn't Keays an inside midfielder? He was played there during the Championship's

Yes he sure is. And he does it well to. Keays will 100% be at the Lions next year and I'd be surprised if he doesn't spend a lot of time in the seniors. Probably won't play as a pure midfielder at first if Rockliff, Beams, Redden, Rich, Hanley, Robinson, Taylor and co are fully fit but he'd be able to play forward to a good standard and would rotate through the middle.

On t he main board their has been discussion on likely pick order.

We have games against melbourne, Gold Coast and carlton to come.

Carlton have a reasonably tough run home.

If we win 2 of those 3 we probably finish 17th if we win all 3 we might get up t 16th (or even 15th or 14th if essendon and/or melbiurne barely win another game).

Starting to temper my schache/weitering hopes just in case.

With Gibbs and Swallow's seasons over I don't think we can rely on Carlton and Gold Coast winning too many.

Would be an absolute waste of a season if we dont get 1 of Scheitering, Fransic or Scahce.
Yes we might win 2 more games, albeit against lowly opposistion but in 6 years time what is more important: 2 wins against bottom 4 teams or a Schache/Weitering that could set us up for the next 10 years.

Might be worth considering putting some players into early surgery like Beams for his shoulder etc.

It's always so distasteful to suggest you want your side to lose matches but I don't think that's the case for the majority here. I think there's a frustration that we have been an average team for a number of seasons now who has had numerous strong finishes to seasons, building up hopes before a new year begins and we're below average yet again.

To have only ended up with picks towards the end of the top 10 considering how poor a side we have been overall is somewhat frustrating, especially considering the two years we were woeful all season - '10 and '11 - the Suns took us out of the running for the elite few at the top, and in the following years we were bumped back by the Giants.

Swallow, Gaff, Patton, Coniglio, Stringer, Tyson, Wingard, Macrae, Wines, Boyd, Billings, Kelly, Bontempelli and Kolodjashnij have been just out of reach as a result, while we've ended up with Polec, Longer, Mayes & Aish. Two are gone, one more is about to, and all four are quite clearly not in the same bracket as the majority of the earlier top 10 picks from their year. Not yet, at least.

It would feel frustrating to have had to endure another season of very poor performances to yet again miss out on that bracket of elite players, so I too find myself hoping the circumstances fall our way to ensure we end up with a top three pick.

That doesn't mean I'll be barracking for a loss on Sunday or at any other match this season, but if the match starts to head that way I'll be quietly content just as I was against Sydney, Fremantle and Adelaide. I believe it's quite essential to our list build to get at least one shot at that top bracket of draftees, and expect this will probably (hopefully, at least) be the last year we're right down the bottom of the table and in with a shot.

It's distasteful as I said, and I would hope we would never deliberately lose because I believe the impacts that can have on culture are evident, but if we have some brave losses and/or those sides around us get a few against the odds wins, I think that would be a good thing for the football club. To end up with a pick outside the top two or three would be a real shame to be honest.
