The Carlton, Gold Coast games are interesting. We had more injuries the first time we played them but Gold Coast absolutely smashed us and Carlton almost beat us but that was when they had Malthouse. They're both winnable but so was the Melbourne game yesterday so it's difficult to have any confidence.

Just can't see us kicking a winning score against anyone at the moment unfortunately. Carlton we're a disgrace when we played them, and we were very lucky to win. Gold Coast have got better and we have gone backwards. Hopefully we get to see Freeman and West in the team in the next few weeks to get a couple of goals and give us some structure.

These are the match ups that will most likely decide the bottom 3 placings, with my tips in bold:

Rd.19 Bris v Suns
Rd.20 Bris v Carl
Rd.21 Suns v Ess
Rd.21 Carl v Melb
Rd.22 Suns v Power
Rd.22 GWS v Carl

I feel we need at least pick #2 for Schache, if not the first pick.

And whilst a wooden spoon is not what we want; it may be a much bigger advantage than simply obtaining the kid perceived the best in the draft - considering we may require pick #1 in the PSD for trade period discussions in any potential deals we may need to do with Aish and Dixon

Hi Guys,

Curious as to whether you'd take Weitering or Schache if you have pick 1? I do think however by season's end Carlton will be last.

The most frustrating thing about our team is a lot of what happens is under their control. Very frustrating watching Hawthorn play and then watching us play. When someone takes a mark, Hawthorn have at least 5 or 6 players breaking free from their man creating a lead. We would be lucky to have 1 or 2. They work hard to get off their man and create a lead. We look around waiting for someone to lead, lazy lazy football and irks the shit out of me. They can run, they just choose not to.

I think Carlton would take Weitering and the Lions would take Schache so it probably doesn't matter whether or not the Blues or Lions finish last, if both are bottom 2 both should get their man although I wouldn't completely rule out the Lions selecting Weitering.

I have to admit before the Demons game I thought we were a good chance of getting another 4 or so wins including one against the Demons but I think it is safe to say we are now a lock to finish bottom 3(If we weren't already). We are now 3 wins away from the 15th placed Demons and we would still be below due to percentage. Welcome one of Weitering, Schache or Francis to the Lions I'd say.

It has been a terrible year on field and I am hoping for some miracle in which we can win 90% of our remaining games and gain a bit of respect and confidence back but it looks like we will have to settle for the silver lining in that we will finally get our hands on an elite draft prospect which we have been robbed of due to the Suns and Giants inclusions to the competition.

Weitering is firming as the most highly rated youngster in the draft, however we have a few promising KPD on our list Clarke, Gardiner, Andrews and you can also throw in McStay and Paparone as options too, and a fair chance we'll get Hipwood too.

With all that considered, I think we will probably pass on Weitering to address our forward line issues. Even if we land Dixon, I still think we would go Schache.

I dunno. Freeman looks a long way off in the twos and I can't see West coming in for Leuey or Stef without an injury or suspension. Or West kicking a couple of bags in the twos which is unlikely.

Crazy to think we have to go back to 2006 to identify the last time we had a top 4 pick. I mean we selected Polec with pick 5 in 2010 but we all know how that turned out. The majority of our picks have been pick 7's and 8's. Henderson pick 8, Rich pick 7, Longer pick 8, Mayes pick 8, Aish pick 7. It will be nice to finally have a top 3 pick come draft time as much as it sucks to be in that position due to a very poor season.

Look at the young, rebuilding teams around us, they all have multiple young players who were selected in the top 5:

Suns: Swallow, Bennell, O'Meara, Martin, Koloadjashnij, Day.
Saints: Billings, McCartin.
Bulldogs: Boyd, Bontempelli, Stringer.
Demons: Hogan, Brayshaw, Petracca, Toumpas.

(Hogan, Martin and O'Meara were taken in the mini draft but they most definitely would have gone top 5.

I have probably missed some in those groups. We on the other hand have none. We simply need to get some top end talent in this year.

And those numbers are pushed back further by the guys who were not in the list to be drafted (ie pre selected by suns/giants/mini draft etc ... so if you add them in our pick say 5 might really be pick 18 etc

I agree with bolded part. After watching a few U18 games I'm not really seeing the love for Schache. Yes he has scored goals (most I have seen is from turnovers up the field) but there are some major flaws in his game. I haven't really seen him win many contested marks or use his body effectively compared to Weitering, although I might have been watching his poorer games??. Weitering is still IMO comfortably the best player in the draft currently.

Watch him in the TAC Cup, if your in Vic.

The thing is they are both KPP's but that's really where the similarity starts and ends so it's pretty difficult to make any useful comparison. Weitering has a very mature body - looks much older than 18 - whereas Schache is very undeveloped physically, apart from his height. Once Schache grows into his body and gets stronger he could be anything. I tend to agree about his marking - Weitering appears to have much better judgment in the air but that might come also. Either would be a welcome addition and I don't envy our recruiters if it gets down to a choice between the two.

It's all in the (Eric) Hips(wood):

Given that Keays & Hipwood are likely round 2 or 3 draftee's, I find it difficult to imagine both Keays & Hipwood being drafted by Brisbane. Schacke or Weitering in first round then probably Keays after that. That leaves Hipwood more available to other clubs to pick up. Given that he has family support in Melbourne will also make him more likeable to Melbourne based clubs because he wont have the "go home" factor as much as other interstates have had in the past.

We can match selections of our academy players with combinations of our lower draft picks. We can take both Keays and Hipwood regardless of when they get selected, assuming we're willing to relinquish the corresponding later picks required.

Soooo ... *if* we ended up with picks 1 and 2 - would people be more likely to / expect the club to be more likely to go Schache/Weit or Scha/Francis or ....?

I am thinking that the want-to-come-to-the-Lions vibe from Schache and Francis plus the do-we-really-have-to vibe of Pickering might tip it that way or is Weit that much more appealing that Francis that it is worth the risk or ...?

I think we'd be putting the pick 2 on the trade table to either trade back to include a player + pick or trade in a player.

Yep, I'd see what we could pry lose from another club in terms of getting a player plus a downgraded pick still good enough to get Dixon.

You'd think pick 2 would get us Dixon plus the Suns end of first round compo pick they have at the very least.

Schache & Francis for me... Schache obviously as the tall forward we need, but Francis really does also offer us something we lack in that bull ultility/Mid who will be ready to play next season
