The way I understand it, and I very may well be wrong, but we would receive a 25% discount on academy kids with the points system.
If this is the only incentive that we receive, then surely other clubs will have to help out financially instead of us completely funding the academy. We can't poor millions into developing these kids of X amount of years and receive 25% off. Its just crazy. If they are going to go down this path, the way the academies are funded are surely going to have to change.
I think you'll be hard pressed to see that happen.

Knightmare has posted his views for this years draft crop. One of the more astute draftee observers and gives a fairly good account and also does make changes as the year rolls on. Interesting to see where he rates Keays and possibly a tad lazy with the Lions just taking Academy players. Quite complimentary with where we will finish though!
While he does a lot of good work he, like a lot of bf drafters, have tended to massively overrate the majority of northern states players early in the year, only to drop them from their boards like a lump of lead once it becomes apparent they're not going to go that high.

KM does a mountain of work but the bloke clearly has an axe to grind when it comes to the Academies. It suits his narrative to keep the Academy kids at the top of his rankings for as long as possible.

Especially when Keays and Mills are one, two and then Dunkley in third. Pretty easy to connect the dots.

He had Hammelman a lot higher, for a lot longer, than any other draft watcher I read. Same with Conway and Tickner the year before.

I agree with that. He may not even be doing it deliberately but on a subconscious level he is doing it. There is no way that in only a few years of the academies running 2 of the 3 best under 18 players in the country are from NSW and QLD.

Also I hope the 4 clubs with academies coordinated our response to the AFL to get the best possible result. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread 40% discount would be more fair, especially for the top end players as with the proposed points system picks 1, 2 and 3 are way overvalued compared to pick 4 and after. If one of our clubs gets a player who gets into the top 3 the AFL practically robs us blind.

Josh Schache, a top key forward prospect in this years draft kicked 7 goals today for the Murray Bushrangers.
The romantic in me would like to see him come to us due to his dad playing for the Bears, 55 games I think. I know it's a midfielders draft however if he's good enough let's grab him. Leppa has spoken about growing our own and even though it'll take a few years it might be that we have to use our first rounder on the best KPF and if it's him then so be it.

He has tended to overrate our Academy players though, especially early in the year. And yeah, it is a little on the lazy side, but I'm loathe to criticise anyone who put as much effort into something as he does.

Mind you Riewoldt and Koschitzke went 1,2 in 2000.

They were going to but gold coast broke ranks and said they need special treatment on academy as they have no f/s available.... (i mean forgetting GWS et al who also dont...) So they may screw the message there (i.e. if you make it not worth our while, this very good and successful scheme will fall over because eddie is a dick).

Yeh, this seems strange... with the saints list being so utterly terrible surely they will take a midfielder at 1. If this does hold and another mid doesnt go till 3 or 4 it Makes Keays/Mills a ridiculously amount more expensive (with current discount) if they are 2 best mids.

What are our chances of picking up both Schache and keays because getting them both in the same draft would be awesome. Plus Carlisle and motlop annnd im being greedy again. :) ;)
