Wouldn't it be great as a silver lining if we did finish last and we were to lose the following players if the combination of Leuy and Adcock leaving netted us pick 2 as compensation and we got both Weitering and Schache(Not going to happen just a bit of a tongue in cheek scenario. Plus I would be devastated if Jed were to leave!).
No hurt in dreaming and for all of those I would rather wins than pick 1/2/3 or whatever have you been watching the last five years because those late wins haven't done jack. Tired of watching other teams with the possibility of finals and then we get that glimmer of hope that 'next years gonna be our year' then it's the same ol same ol start to the season.

It would be interesting if we did finish last to see who the club would go for out of Weitering and Schache(Not saying they are the only two in the running it is still way to early but this is a hypothetical).

With our desperation for a key forward for so long it would be hard to pass on Schache but Weitering looks like such a "sure thing" which has to be very appealing as a recruiter. You have to remember that Jarryd Roughead was a key defender as a junior and he was considered a "sure thing" and look how his career has turned out(As a key forward ironically). Quality KPP's are hard to come by and I would rather the club selected Weitering over Schache if they considered him the better prospect despite our need for a key forward.

Worth noting that Weitering trained with us in January and by all accounts impressed everyone. He is a very capable forward and the Roughhead comparison is not without merit.

Capable for his current age etc or better than what is on our list atm or ... ?

He might be the best forward as well as the best in this draft. Hard to say given Schache's improvement and him playing down back this year but if we wanted to develop him as a forward I would suggest there is enough talent there for him to succeed.

Weitering does come with a side serving of Liam Pickering though. I think we'll be cautious having him as the manager of another one of our prized recruits.
Yep that puts you off right away doesn't it. We need to draft country kids who aren't managed by Pickers. I'm getting tired of us baby sitting these kids for a couple of years only for someone else to reap the rewards. With that manager he'll want to leave for sure.

Well lucky for us there are good alternatives:

Josh Schache - tall power forward from Murray Bushrangers, his late father played for the Brisbane Bears.

Aaron Francis - utility with elite game reading and kicking skills, from country SA (?from region near where Justin Clarke came from), also a soft spot for Lions as his brother (tragically passed away from cancer last year) was a stoic Brisbane supporter.

I hope we pick up Schache. Fits our need to a tee, not to mention his connections with us.

We need to get a highly rated forward at all costs at the need of year. If we pick Francis or Weitering instead of Scache (if he is still available) then the will not have learnt very much.

I've read a few reviews on Weitering that he's talented enough to play any KP... Forward or back.
If he's clearly a better player than Scache then take him. Lots of water to go under the bridge yet.

Yeah, Weitering being managed by Pickering is a big no for me if we have pick 1.

he's considered the best mananger in the business, so players generally sign for him doesn't mean they are looking to leave.

think we need to however have more frank draft interviews and get a better understanding of a draftees character, whether they are rubbish blokes or not (they are getting better at masking all this, from all reports I recall everyone being very impressed with Boyd after his interviews in his draft year)

Is their any chance that we can get a top 10 pick as compensation, if we lose Adcock and Leuy to FA?

There seems to be a range of opinions on this, but my opinion is that there is no chance of that at all.

In our wildest dreams the best we could hope for is band 3 (after our second round pick) if both Leuenberger and Adcock left as free agents. The AFL doesn't have to combine the compo for those players, incidentally, so we could get something like an end of second round pick and a third round pick.

Odds are if leuie should be able to command 500k+ on the open market with clubs looking for a first choice ruckman
should be able to get a decent pick for it

The only way Leuey would command $500K a year is if he gets a run as first ruck with us this year and returns to his best form. Then, we'll start to wonder whether he is worth letting go.

I also don't see a huge demand for first string ruckmen. Most clubs have an obvious first team ruckman and, like us, would be reluctant to pay big bucks for a bloke who is not best 22. The clubs who might be interested would be:

Essendon: ruck is a clear deficiency on their list and have been active in the free agency market. Salary cap space would be a question mark.

Sydney: Mike Pyke's form has probably evened out and they don't have a mature second stringer. Still subject to trade/FA restrictions and so can't offer a big contract.

Geelong: maybe they would be interested if they decide they need a pure ruck. I dunno though. Their mobile ruckmen strategy seems to be working with Stanley, Blicavs, etc. Also have the prospect of Dangerfield taking up cap space.

Bulldogs: Don't seem to be too happy with their options at the moment with Minson, Cordy getting swapped in and out. I'd be surprised if it were a high priority though.

Every other club has a ruckman who is doing pretty well in the role and really would be on the lookout for a cheap backup, at best. That doesn't help us.

I think the best option would be for Essendon to go after Leuey. But, unless he has a complete form turnaround, they simply aren't going to pay him big bucks.

Possibly Carlton as well with Warnock on the outer and Wood a pretty average ruck if they see Kreuzer filling a second ruck/key forward role instead of Casboult.

Hopefully the AFL announce a reduction in the salary cap and clubs decide that part time rucks aren't really the way forward.

What POBT said.

After this year's debacle, the two factors Essendon are going to be most keen on in a ruckman are durability and consistency. Leuenberger has neither of those things.

Come to think of it, that's what everyone wants in a ruckman.

We should also bear in mind that Kreuzer and Bellchambers are also FA eligible. I'd take Leuey over Bellchambers but I suspect for any club wanting a ruckman it's line-ball. It is not a good market for a ruckman looking for a new club.

The contract would also have to long term for band 1 and I can't see any team offering Leuie a 4 year contract with his injury history.

edit: Should have refreshed before posting. Ironmonger already said as much.

But if Kreuzer or Bellchambers switch clubs then Carlton or Essendon might look to Leuey to take the vacant ruck spot.
