Hopefully we get that priority pick, so we can get them all.
The more you talk about this, the more disappointed you'll be at the end of the year.

It ain't gonna happen.

Irrespective of the draft rewards, losing games is never a good thing. I hope we beat Gold Coast and Carlton. The real prospect of coming last is completely demoralising.

If Aish were to gain us (say) pick 10 in the draft and we had pick 3, I'd be inclined to keep those two picks rather than look to upgrade to pick 1. If we got something more like pick 20 for Aish, then it becomes more attractive to do a pick upgrade trade but probably less likely that the side with the number 1 pick does the deal.

Agreed.

Hindsight's always 20/20, but would anyone swap Angus Brayshaw and Nakia Cockatoo for Paddy McCartin?

Maybe a better question is whether you would now swap just Brayshaw for McCartin - I certainly wouldn't.

We wont need to tank.
We will finish with a wet sale and give a better contest, but the only games I see us winning are 50/50's in Carlton , Gold Coast, and maybe maybe Melbourne.
I think Rocky should be back by the Melbourne game but I think it will take a few games with the boys to get our midfield gelling.
We will significantly improve but I cant see us winning anymore than 2 more games to be honest, have a look at our draw. We'll be playing teams in the top 4 or teams fighting to stay in the 8.
We'll have pick 1 or 2or 3 , no worries there, plus our team should improve. Happy days right.
The way I see it Schache coming out now saying he wants to play at the Lions , why would another team pick him up at draft 1 or 2 or 3 hearing this , too risky .
If he is the goods I hope we go for him even if he was to slip a little further in the draft, sounds like he would be invested into our club, and he fits our needs 110%

I don't think the club would even have the balls to ask for one. They seem confident in the 5-year plan they've got in place. If we nail the draft this year without any AFL assistance, that'll be a huge stepping stone.

Agree

There are probably a host of reasons why, not the least of which is that Fat Ed is likely to still be drawing breath unless something tragic happens to him.

Anyone got a functional voodoo doll?

As long as there is no more significant injuries in the next 2 weeks (our luck has to change eventually)

I just can't assume this anymore. As it stands, we've now got our best player this year in doubt with a shoulder.

I know we keep saying the cavalry is coming but, even if they do turn up, they'll be riding lame horses and struggling for breath.

Pfft... keep playing with the clay.

I think the swagger will come back once 5-6 of our best 18 are from QLD. That may well be in a few years time, but I feel there is always going to be that potentially gut wrenching feeling that our best kids will be leaving after their first or second contract.

If Andrews, Dawson, Freeman can make the grade and we add a few more locals this year (potentially Keays, Hipwood and Wagner) I think it'll make a huge difference on how we go about things and we can we a REAL Lions outfit once again.

I love when draft tampering benefits us.

Anybody who has an emotional investment at the Lions should be at the club imo. No go home factor, and imagine a Schache/Freeman/Mcstay 3 pronged attack.

With the ball delivered by a Toumpas/Francis pairing... :P

We should have really bottomed out TBH if it wasn't for Vossy trying to protect his job and play the older blokes instead of looking towards the future(most would have done the same).

Goes to show how badly we were set back by the combination of the misevaluation of our list and the changing of the goal posts. Good first year, Voss overestimates our list (bad). We then start our rebuild (good) but the board moves the goal posts and demands wins after a couple of years where any chance of getting real talent was cruelled by the expansion clubs (moronic).

I'm still hoping that with Leigh and Leppa on board we'll stay the course this time. Leppa might not be the one to lead us to the promised land, but I can't see a coach available that's going to magically push our list two years older and stronger.

Well... maybe Hird.

Is it more effective to trade your way up the ladder or to draft your way up the ladder? Especially when you look at how difficult it is for us to get decent talent.

GWS has certainly done well trading to get up the ladder. Port have had some really handy trades as well. While Melbourne and Richmond have perhaps been more reliant on drafting and just topping up with some experience.

IMO both GWS and Port's main success in moving up the ladder has been drafting. Both have short circuited their ladder climbs by good trading, but a majority of their movement has been inherent improvement due to a maturing list (GWS) or improved coaching/fitness (Port). Given that, I'd suggest we're still seeing that building through the draft is the way to get into the top teams and once you've done that well for a few years on the trot, trading well can keep you in there (Hawthorn, Sydney). Do neither and you're looking at Carlton and us and Melbourne until the last year or so (our drafting of talent has been pretty good, but losing the players drafted basically cancels out any benefit).

So glad Schache wants to play for us hopefully we get him

I'd be willing to let Dixon go for Schache absolutely

Who's to say Dicko doesn't want to play for us? Would have been a Lions supporter for sure when he was a little fella.

Nobody but Charlie knows what he wants to do. But now everyone knows Josh wants to play for us we could get both if we win the spoon. But if we had to choose I want Schache more.
