All depends on the pick they are bid on...with the draft a little weak on for talent; 15 - 25 range for both is a possibility.

Won't matter too much, as after 12 or so picks; the point system is skewed a lot less.

For example, for a bid at pick 20 (912 pts), we may use a 3rd, 4th or 5th rounder this year and cop the deficit next year. Or we may see Allison, Rolls and co. as better in the long term and pay for the picks up front this year.

That being said, a bid at 20; with the Lions using a 3rd rounder at 38 instead, would be take us into a minus of 447pts...about the equivalent of moving from pick 4 to 7 next season or from pick 25 to 45 if we're talking second round.

It certainly will make draft night a whole lot more interesting

I haven't seen any indication that it's optional as to how you use your picks to match. The documentation basically says it takes your subsequent picks until either you've matched the total exactly (all good), you've exceeded it (you get a pick back roughly equivalent to the amount you overpaid), or you've run out of picks worth points (in which case your first rounder the next year gets downgraded correspondingly). You don't get to choose which picks to use.

Yes, correct. I was more thinking about trading our 2nd rounder out this year for a greater gain :thumbsu:

Given how confusing it has proven for everyone, I have worked out (what I believe to be accurate) a draft table including the points worth of each pick, the discount applied for academy picks and the points total/pick required to match it. Yellow signifies the 1st round - hopefully I have got my maths right!!!!

At the end of the day the recruiters still need to get it right. At least the other clubs have to show their hand first
And it is after the trade period, allowing us to make informed decisions on trades knowing what academy products we have available and what we are prepared/need to pay for them.

Watching Keays yesterday and was trying to work out who he reminded me of. The closest comparison I could find was when Dayne Beams was underaged. That same mix of inside ability and leather chasing. Not outstanding foot skills but OK, good handballing and reasonable atheticism.

Quite like that comparison actually. I was thinking he was a bit similar to Robbie Gray in ways.

So let's say we get no fa compo (leuie out someone in) we use whatever we get for aish to trade (Dixon or someone)

And today's ladder stays the same for us. We'd have picks 2, 20, 38, 56, 74.

Terry Wallace had keays and hipwood at picks 19/20 today.

Pick 2 best available
Pick 19 bids on keays we match using pick 20 which has a spare 160 points
Pick 20 (no longer us) bids on hipwood and we match using the 160 points, pick 38 (465) and pick 56 worth 194 points. Wen nee715 and have 820 points there. So a spare 100 points which lands us roughly pick 65.

We would absolutely trade picks 20,38,56 to get 19,20,66 a no brainer so still decent value in the bidding system.

End result.
Out maguire, leueie, aish, and probably staker, mcgaune, golby, Paine (if not others)
In 1 fa (sucking, Tarrant or other), 1 trade (dixon), pick 2 (schache, weitering Francis), keays, hipwood, pick 66 and perhaps upgrading one of bourke or Beasley given the potential loss of4-5 kpp at the end of the year.

This makes sense and seems a big win for us! Then we get Allison next year! Looking up quickly i'd say.

So if we finished last and Keays got bid on by Richmond say 15 would pick 20 and Hipwood bid at 23 by Stkilda and give our 3rd round pick and change of pick 20 if any be enough for both ?

Beams is the guy I had come up with as well. Both pretty similar as juniors I think.

I don't think we have much of a chance of getting Schache after yesterday's performance to be honest. While I'm pleased that we're once again looking at an improved second half of the season I'm also very gutted at the likely scenario that Schache won't be a lion in 2016. Can only hope Carlton take Weitering, and Gold Coast have a performance spike with the return of Ablett and other key players and shoot above us.

Carlton will be a game and percent ahead of us after today. I think Gold Coast are most likely for the spoon with Carlton and us second or third.

I also like your optimism of an improved second half of the season.

We do what we have done for the last 5 years. Shit 1st half of the season before a little comeback when it doesn't matter anymore in the 2nd half of the season netting us just enough wins so we can't take the best forward or midfielder.

Can or can't ?

Unfortunately the new rules as I understand them state we can't carry over points like that - happy to be corrected though

Hipwood should be in the same bracket as Andrews. Not quite as far back as Hammelman was seen to be but high enough that we'll need a draft pick. Maybe higher than the 61 we paid for Andrews though.

It SHOULD go:

Scharede (Sandstorm)
Keays
Hipwood
Wagner
Dennis

Rookies

Buzza
Chol
Other
Other

That Avatar of yours is highly distracting ;):p:oops:.

can't. Didn't get McCartin last year or Boyd the year before and l don't think we will get Scache this year.
The Suns will improve more than we will, they have Junior and a few others to return plus incumbent key forwards of which we are bereft.I think everyone is on the same page at our club,we need time to develop our players and better luck with injury.Sadly, this doesn't accompany many victories.

I actually think we will improve more than them when our injuries come back. They have a lot of their prime midfielders out for the majority of the season and l don't think Gaz will be their saviour when he comes back.

Rocky and Merret and Robertson will help immensly. When our midfield is all on the park l could see a few upset wins like how we almost beat Adelaide.

Maybe, but for either team it's not like you get everyone back and no one else gets injured.Shall see.
