14.1 isn't a great beep test result and I think Schache running ability has been over rated. Actually 14.1 is quite poor IMO.
its probably mid range, though given his size probs rated a little higher, he hasn't had injury issues and all wouldnt be surprised if he gets that upto about 14.5 to 14.7.

In my opinion Peter Wright showed alot more last year but there wasnt as much hype about him as there is about schache, bit strange

14.1 for a big bodied forward is pretty good. I think they hype around Schache is that there is a fair bit of old style full forward about him and he is a beautiful kick of the footy. If we can get our hands on him and Hipwood, I would think our future forward stocks would be more than adequately covered moving forward.

Maybe because people weren't sure if he was more of a ruckman or a forward. Also, l think Schache has a bit more pace and turning ability than big Wright.

14.1 would be very good for a 200cm 95kg forward. Browny was considered elite with a mid 14s beep after a few years in the system, so I think that will be a good platform and I wouldn't be surprised if he hit a high 14s low 15s once combine specific training is targeted at the end of the season.

Wright actually had very decent pace for his size, though yes is turning circle was absolutely rubbish

he was rated as a ruckman but was adamant in becoming a forward...guess it was a risky selection even though he may have become a high quality ruckman if he didnt crack it as a forward (a safety net not most top tall prospects have) you dont pick rucks with top 10 picks

I know there is a lot of “Talls” love about this years draft. And reasonably so, especially for this Board, given our team needs.

In my opinion, Hopper is the best “Mid” in this years Draft, and could arguably become the consensus “No.1” by draft time.

This raises an interesting situation should our recruiters have a like opinion at that time and we finish with the first pick, as to whether “We” would select him, as best available, given he is certain to be nominated by GWS as an Academy selection.

Surely the comments floating on the various draft forums (and here, if I remember correctly) suggesting that there is an “Agreement” between the teams with an Academy not to select each others “Nominees” is just Big Footy Bullsh*t. (To do so would be/is nothing short of Draft tampering).

And if that is our Recruiters opinion, then I hope we indeed make that selection, to get the best available with the No.1 pick, to maintain the integrity of the Draft, and to support the Academy Scheme by ensuring GWS pay the rightful “price”, should they choose to move up.

It's just a hypothetical for reasoned discussion, of course.

Ps Although for me it is a real possibility given my estimation of Hopper ….. and my desire not to let another high quality Mid slip through our fingers and go on to become a Club Captain, 3 time premiership player, 3 time Club Champion & 4 time All Australian – like we did in 2006. Well.... not without trying anyway.......

^ I agree. I don't believe in the 'agreement'

We should be desperate to make a team like gws (and sydney) use as much capital to get talent given we'd be hoping to play against them in finals from say 2017-2022 with our 'current' lists

Wright was the consensus no.1 pick at the start of last year but dropped off due to concerns about him projecting as more of a ruckman. He got just as much hype as Schache- it's just the Schache's hype is picking up around the time that Wright's dropped off last year.

I would've thought 14+ would be considered to be pretty good for a 200cm player...

That kicking action and his touch with passing into the forward 50 is sublime.. Remember when browny was at his peak and would place passes for other forwards perfectly. Schache has potential for this.. We need the weitering hype to build because I can't see us finishing last.. Pray for GC to take him first and we get our long term answer!!

Weitering was just voted best of the AFL Academy by his peers. I think it's the Ben Mitchell Medal. So he's getting some well deserved hype.

My cousin went to a match in Geelong & sent me this-

" The following observations were made at Geelong after the matches Vic. Country Vs S.A and V.Metro Vs W.A.
The standard of talent was high,as it was in last years TAC Cup finals. Therefore one needs to be very wary when comparing Div. 2 players , where the play and talent is 2 tiers or more below.
Weitering. A natural general. Reads the play and positions himself very well. Skills are high level. Never seems under pressure. Wins contests consistently, and makes the right choices.
He had an opponent who was a good player,so it was not a pushover, and one could get a fair appreciation of his exceptional ability. There is no better player on offer, it's just a matter of what is required.
Francis. A terrific footballer,I would rate him well above Aish, in every aspect. Strong, dashing, a leader and very versatile. Kicked a beautiful goal from a set shot just outside 50 early in the game, which drew deserved general applause. Loved his initiative when he took a centre bounce and thumped it 20-30-metres setting up a goal.
He came slightly unstuck when the S.A coach for some strange reason, maybe desperate, opposed him to Schache in the 2nd quarter. He ran off him very successfully a couple of times, but was soon overwhelmed by size. He was moved again and played well again. He would be ready to play now,in terms of physique, talent and skill. Guts plus...a captain in the making.
Schache. A formidable display, they has no answer,so in a sense it was harder to rate the pertormance.Led very well and always to the correct flank, suiting his kicking foot, which helped him slot some tricky goals. Marked well and used his body superbly.Someone referred to his inability to get separation. They were watching from a hotel in Werribee. The kid is better than Hawkins at that stage, much more mobile and smarter.
These 3 kids are guns, and it boils down to needs. They all have apparently positive Lions connections. Wish we grabbed all three, and would offload Aish if it helped achieve this.
Ah Chee. A terrific talent, fast strong and beautiful disposal. Helped set W.A up for a deserved , convincing win over V.Metro. Would be my number 4.
Would not look at any Academy kids before these guys, sorry !"

I watched all the games on the weekend live. Qld would be very competitive with Metro and WA. NSW similarly if they had Mills playing. Metro and WA are both very ordinary teams and the quality of the game was poor. VC is a very good team and one of the best for years.

Schache didn't get separation on a lead all day. He picked up three goals in the second from SA turnovers that bounced back quickly catching Francis out of position giving he was running off Schache and Schache was not chasing. Francis played on Schache for the last three quarters from memory.

Ah Chee had his best game of the champs playing at half forward for WA. He has been pretty poor on the wing and through the midfield throughout the Champs. I will be shocked if he goes number 4. The best player for WA by a mile was Petrevski-Seton who is a bottom ager.

I would rate him well above Aish, in every aspect......... and would offload Aish if it helped ..........

Rant starts here<

As were at least 35 players in his Draft ....and near the same in this Draft.
Offloading would help....no matter what we get in return.

Sorry (I've bit my tongue for so long too...).
I did not rate him at the 2013 Draft (obviously) ... actually cringed when his name was called (similarly as with Polec previously).
I had Sheed at that Pick (as the selections fell) - would be happy with that now (hindsight is a wonderful thing) ... (not to mention we could have taken McCarthy ...oh, I just did ...).

Just look closely at Aish when next he plays. Skill/ Athletic deficiencies aside (for a Pick 7), the kid is "soft" (ala Polec).
If you watch closely he makes subtle decisions that mean he will avoid any physical contact. It happens so often that I am convinced when there is contact that it is by accident.
Harsh...yes .....based on what I have witnessed ...YES.
To be supposedly "held to ransom Pickering Style" has probably escalated my level of dissatisfaction, admittedly.

>Rant ends here

For me Aish doesn't have any attributes that make me think he has the potential to be an elite player. Would swap him for a selection to get Hipwood in a heartbeat!

Just thought of a scenario, and I feel like it leaves Brisbane in a fairly vulnerable position. Let's say Gold Coast finish last and they've decided that they're happy to go with Weitering in the draft. They have a meeting and say, let's try and use this to our advantage, so they say to Brisbane, "We're going to draft Schache with pick number one, so unless you trade us pick number 2 and a ready made player then there is no way you're getting Schache. " So Brisbane, as desperate as we are for a kpf decide to make Schache a sure thing and go ahead and reluctantly trade our pick 2 and Mayes. Marcus Ashcroft, the cheeky bugger and his Gold Coast buddies organise a bbq and invite all of the brisbane lions board, staff and players. While everyone is there they announce that they were never going to pick Schache and that Brisbane had unnecessarily traded Mayes. Leppitsch can't believe it, Mitch Robinson stands up and says "I told you no one takes Brisbane seriously", Rocky gets mad and meanwhile Mayes is in the corner crying. Probably because Gold coast have a zero mullet policy. I'm not sure I'll handle another stressful off-season period guys.

Wont work, we just draft Weitering and then in 2 years pick up the Schache attack just in time for out Grand final push...
Boom cop that you dirty little Suns

Suns had a couple of players and will have some more come back this week and even though they won't beat NM I reckon they're in with a chance versus the doggies up in Cairns the week after. Possibility Vs the Giants but I reckon our match with them in Rd 19 will decide it all.

Weitering's Stingrays and Schache's Bushrangers play each other in a couple of weeks, hope they both don't have other commitments and can line up on each other. Weitering to dominate Schache (just this once) and to go nuts over the rest of the season and GC just have to take him.

I don't have faith that we'd be able to keep weitering for long with pickering involved.
Agreed, I know I am sounding paranoid and aware Weitering was up in Brisbane training with the boys, I can see him doing an Aish - Either demanding an ungodly amount for a 2nd year player to stay or leaving right after.

Without a doubt we would tell them to piss off. It's a very fanciful scenario.
