Aside from. Not seeing us as a threat I doubt other clubs will do much to help us get aces to academy talent with pick trades (even though I raised it myself a couple of pages back)

I'd be prepared to carry forward a debt to next year if it means we end up with 3 top 20 talents this year (especially 2 Queenslanders) would need to think strongly about how we get enough points next year to match for Allison who if I'm not mistaken was an AA u-18 this year as an underage?

many are rating him at the very least a top 10 talent

The pick trades we're throwing around have happened three or four times in the past five years. I don't think any club would be doing it through altruism, but rather the prospect of securing an extra top 20 talent for themselves.

Haven't really been following this thread, can someone give us a quick overview of what QLD talent is out there and how highly they are rated? :)

Tickner and Conway are rated as top 20 picks.

Knightmare has Hipwood rated number 4 in his power rankings now, basing that on how he has improved this year and if he continues that improvement how good he will be in the next few years.

Knightmare has a strong agenda to push though....

TBH all I really care about is getting good players at a fair pick value who won't want to leave us after 2 years.

This was probably mentioned as well, but a trade for dixon could prevent us from picking up all three or at the very least put our first pick next year into the third round or are my calculations way.

Ps. To assume we keep both adcock and leuenberger
The likely assumption is the

As much as I am very thankful for all of his hard work I do think that he is a bit blinded and can make some over presumptuous calls.

Hell, I even think Hipwood inside the top 20 is a bit high. I see his potential, but there are better prospects available at that point. Clubs may bid higher to force our hand though.

I don't mind Knightmare, he is one of the more knowledgeable people on the Draft's board but rating Hipwood at 4 is absolutely crazy. Obviously not a fan of the academies.

Where would Bontompelli have been rated at this time in his draft year? He's basing it on how good he will be in the future with how much he has improved this year, not on the player he is now. That's his reasoning for rating him highly...

More likely to have misses projecting that far but when you get it right like Fyfe, Bontompelli or Cripps, you look like a genius.

Be great to have an insight into how some recruiters judge talent. Are they basing it on the player they are now or projecting to how good they will be in the future with some players who may not be at the standard of some more highly rated kids in their draft year.

This time of year, I had Bontempelli at 7. Certainly will look a genius if he gets that right though. I haven't read Knightmare's thought's of him. Does he have him pegged up forward or down back?

I understand he has improved out of sight, don't get me wrong.

Said he can play at either end of the ground as a KPP while racking up midfielder type numbers. I have no idea where he will play at AFL level or where he is best suited. Didn't realise he's grown 9cm's this year already. Could be Sandi's height by the end of the year :p

Yeah, he can rack up the numbers. I personally, really like him down back. He shown signs up forward but I think that if a club was going to take a punt on him inside the top 20, they'd be doing that with the vision of him becoming a defender. Will need to bulk up a lot, but that will come in a professional environment.

The thing I think that excites some people is that he can play both ends and have an impact. Harris Andrews played forward mostly however now doing a great job down back. If you can switch a player that can turn a game like he did against Tasi in the second quarter, its gotta be a big tick for him. Don't think he's in the top 4 but definitely believe he's top 20 along with Cal Twomey and lots of others who are perceived as the experts.

Yeah, Its certainly a big tick for him, no doubt. Wish we could have seen him against the division 1 sides.

Top 20 is a big call for mine. I admittedly haven't seen much of him apart from at the champs because I do majority of my work here in Melbourne. But I've been watching junior footy for years now and certainly long enough where I feel comfortable having a different opinion then some of the so called experts. I've got him pegged anywhere from 30 on wards. But a club might bid a bit higher than that to force our hand.

Hipwood is rated top 20 by twomey, Wallace, and as noted by knightmare (and others) on the draft board here.

That is higher and better consensus than the likes of tickner and Conway but get the point being made.

To be fair to knightmare (who I agree is anti academy) he is saying he rates hipwood as a top 4 draft talent but when he does his mock he won't nominate him as a top 4 pick but regulates his selections based on his assessment of how the draft normally goes. Expect he'll have hipwood about 10-15 in his next update.

Cal's a good journo, but no way would I draft him to the Lions with a top 20 pick. To my knowledge he isn't even playing football at a suburban level right now and hasn't for some time, so that would be an enormous risk to take someone completely unproven seemingly with no footballing aspirations in the top 20. Not even sure where you got the idea really. Ridiculous.

After the champs the TAC cup boys get a lot more attention from now till the end of the year. There will be more movement in people's rankings and I don't take projected future rankings into consideration. I agree with you in that Hipwood isn't top 20 but more around the 30 mark. Also this years crop of draftees is not as strong as last years so have to take that into consideration as well.

If the Lions are serious about taking both Keays & Hipwood in this years draft, (nobody knows what they are thinking as yet) having them both in top 20 contention makes it much more costly anyway.

There are 6-7 players NOT playing any suburban footy now (including Keays, William, Wagner) so I don't understand that comment.

PattyK is just looking for reasons not to draft Cal Toomey. He's being a contrarian. Everyone knows Twomey's a top 20 pick.

We don't need to draft him he's a FREE AGENT!

If journalists (I use the term loosely) had a draft:

Robbo would desperately try to get on a list but his draft combine results would be so ordinary (unable to write a single coherent sentence) that he would retire to the pub before the beep test. He would then spend a decade at the bar telling stories about his best mate Jimmy Hird.

Hamo would be drafted by the over 30s B grade team in a country town who need him because the old crazy guy who lives in a cave and writes the loony theories about aliens in letters to the editor in the local rag is out injured.
