Hipwood will be a top 20 talent easy. 200cm nice left foot, good mark, can run and excellent agility. Draft camp will help elevate his status again.

Where would Bontompelli have been rated at this time in his draft year? He's basing it on how good he will be in the future with how much he has improved this year, not on the player he is now. That's his reasoning for rating him highly...

More likely to have misses projecting that far but when you get it right like Fyfe, Bontompelli or Cripps, you look like a genius.

Be great to have an insight into how some recruiters judge talent. Are they basing it on the player they are now or projecting to how good they will be in the future with some players who may not be at the standard of some more highly rated kids in their draft year.

Knightmare tends to go out on a limb a bit. Sometimes he gets it right(Bontempelli), sometimes he gets it very wrong(Reece McKenzie). The Conway and Tickner examples will always make people a little suspicious too.

There are some interesting interviews with Hipwood when he was in the U16s Champs. Its not long ago but he played and was built more like a 16yo Sammy Mayes - a gliding, athletic wingman type.


It's like he's a teenage Peter Parker and got bitten by a radioactive spider late last year. He keeps playing and thinking like a tallish mid between bursts of superpowers.

I think that's what gets people in when they watch him.

If this academy crop is as good as it appears, I really am cool with stocking up and wearing the draft penalty next year, as long as it doesn't prevent us getting our hands on Allison.

Given at this (very early) stage we look like only having Allison and Rolls as likely draft types next year, absolutely agree.
Keays and Hipwood are a must for me, even if it means a slight deficit next year
The likes of Wagner, Chol, Dennis, Buzza and William if of draftable quality will likely be much cheaper anyway

If that were the case it might allow us to trade in a couple of additional later picks for this years crop to get all of them if we felt they were worth it.

These things can come back to bite you though. If we'd been allowed to bank a pick last year, there's almost no chance we would have done it with Eric Hipwood in mind. Things change so quickly with these kids -- 'Howey' Rolls could be a top 5 prospect this time next year.

Very true, good list managers will excel for their clubs, bad ones will hurt their clubs and in some cases, late blooming players like Hipwood this year and Andrews last year will catch everyone off guard and potentially short of points to draft them

Knightmare got it right on Bontempelli? I don't remember him being in his top 20 until later on. I had him pegged top 10 back in may(which is the below post of mine I've quoted)

But boy I screwed the pooch on Aish a bit. What was I thinking, comparing him to Mayes. Hasn't really shown much composure with us.

James Aish - Midfielder - (183cm/75kg)

At this stage, Aish is regarded as top two pick in this years draft crop. Very silky player with good speed and is a very neat user of the footy. Very much and outside player at the moment and will need to continue to work on his inside game, which will certainly improve. A bit like our own Sam Mayes when it comes to composure.

Marcus Bontempelli - Defender/Midfielder - (190cm/82kg)


Don't think I have seen him mentioned anywhere yet. Superb left footy kick with real penetration. He is a line breaking defender/midfielder, he can play on tall's and smalls and is a very good read of the play, takes intercept marks, keeps on running and can get on the scoreboard. I rate him as an 'elite' prospect and think he will go top 10. At this stage, my favorite of the draft.




I rate the above as potential 'elite' prospects in this years draft. Obviously have to wait till the conclusion of the champs to get a better idea.

Hipwood is dividing a lot of opinions, hard to see him not getting a top 20 bid, only takes one recruiter to see what Acuguy sees in, and they'll nominate early.

From the 2 games I've seen and Crushas' video(great work by the way) he looked pretty dam good.
Is the only concern his kicking (maybe trying to do too much) something that could be very coachable.

Either way he would make an exciting combo with Andrews, hopefully continues his similar outputs.

Port Adelaide, Collingwood and Richmond have already started to do it this year. Other clubs have probably started to do the same, if not they certainly will be next year. We'll certainly have to pay fair value for them going forward. Which is fine by me.

Exactly. I see a lot of the TAC Cup and I watched pretty well all the games at the Champs. Anyone who has him top 10, is kidding themselves. I haven't seen a great deal of him apart from at the Champs but he did show some potential going forward. But nothing to me suggests a club would bid a top 10 pick for him. I'd pass and let them take him.

Keays by the length of the Flemington straight.

Looking like in pure value terms, Keays late 1st round, Hipwood perhaps 2nd round. Hopefully we can manufacture something where by we keep our first pick in the draft, but use our 2nd pick and any other incoming picks (compo/trade) to secure the pair. Realistically, if you can bring in 3 good kids each year you are doing pretty good, a combo of 1st pick/Keays/Hipwood would fit that bill.

You do need to keep 1 eye to the next draft, but at the same time, you have to take what is in front of you. IF Keays and Hipwood look too good to pass up, then cop the hit, suck it up next year and move on. If you have the chance to secure 2 good prospects you do it. You can always have a quiet recruiting year the year after if you pick up some really good players. Bonus points being that academy players are 100000% more likely to stay here as well.
